The new iPods
« on: 07 Sep 2007, 13:35 »

Ok... so it has been discussed the past 2 days.... and the general consensus is that the new iPod Nano/Video looks horrible.

Also, the iPod Touch, while very cool, having internet and WiFi and all is nice... it is WAY too expensive... why not just get an iPhone at that price ?

One thing I want to know is; are they really discontinuing the iPod Nano without video ?  I guess I am glad I got mine when I did, before they discontinued it.  I wouldn't even carry around the newer ugly one.

Wah?  Huh?  It looks to me like my current nano except instead of a rounded rectangle 1.5'' x 3.5'' x 0.25'', it's a rounded rectangle 2.06'' x 2.75'' x 0.26''.  I'm not seeing a problem.  The new one looks a little more like a toy, but for the increased battery life and the video I don't think it's really a dealbreaker.

I actually really liked their 'aluminum tube' look for the newest non-video Nano:

I think it is a shame they went back to a plastic clamshell design, especially in dimensions that make it no longer as "hide in your pocket" small.  The new one is simply too wide.

Also, Tommy, what disadvantages are keeping you from the iPhone ?

The only ones I know of are the lack of Flash in the browser, and lack of GPS (which the Google Maps does a good job of making up for), both of which are rumored to be in upcoming patches.

I already have a perfectly good 30GB.

Until I either break it or fill it up completely, I won't be needing a new one.

The difference of 0.5'' will still allow me to fit the new Nano in my pocket, happily.  Of course I don't wear tight hipster/girl jeans.  I agree with you about the aluminum tube design, though, tres industrial design chic.  I agree with Tehz also, there's no away I'm upgraded until my current nano, affectionately named "Pody IV", breaks.

although 160gb is totally unnecessary.

Honestly, my original plan was to when I hit 75 gigs, to just decide what in my music library I just didn't need at all, but since I lost my Ipod, and the 160 gig ones are as much as my 80 gig one cost me when I got it, i'm just going to buy one of those fuckers and let the sweet piece of mind I have from not having to cull my music collection wash over me.

I got the 30 Gig after they dropped it to $250, and I lost my 3-year free return warranty thing from Target in the move, so I'm stuck with mine for a while.

Oh well...

The only thing that I'm getting really excited about this generation is the massive leap in the iPod 'classic' storage space. I think it'd be awesome to have an iPod with as much disc space as my computer.

I don't really understand why one has to have the internet in an mp3 player. Also, I think the touch iPod is silly. It doesn't have much space on it and if you want the touch screen and internet, get an iPhone.

The only thing I like about the new Nanos is the screen looks a bit bigger, but it's still pretty small for video. I have some movies on my 30gig and even that's small and usually it's just for listening to when I'm on a lunch break at work.

I will not be buying a new iPod any time soon. I have an extended warranty on my current one (aka Obadiah) and I'm pretty happy with it. The only thing that will need replacing soon are the headphones, because one of the buds is starting to crackle when the bass line is heavy.

Very true... I wonder when they will gome out with the 1.5TB iPod ;)

I agree that the new nano is fugly. I don't think it needed to play video that badly. In response to those who are asking "why not just get an iPhone", though, I for one don't live in the United States. Even worse, I live in Canada, so if Apple ever does remember to halfheartedly throw an iPhone or two in our general direction, it probably won't be for a few years yet.

In my particular case, I have a sexy little Samsung slider for which I can make my own wallpapers and ringtones, has Bluetooth and even makes calls, which is everything I really want in a phone. I have a 30 GB video iPod, which I use sometimes for music and often for storage. I also have a PSP which I bought 2 games for, played through one and got bored with the other, and now only use as a portable porn machine internet device for when I'm away from my computer. Honestly, for what I'd use it for, an iPod touch would suit me better than the PSP; I've got little enough music to fit on the 16 GB model with room to spare, so I could use the 30 GB iPod solely as a portable hard drive; and since I can sell the PSP, the iTouch won't make nearly the financial dent it otherwise would. I'm sure the circumstances of others differ a lot, but it looks like it's working out nicely for me. Except having to look at that nano. Eww.

Oh, and with the "unofficial" iPhone dev community getting into the swing of things, I have a feeling the iPod touch will gradually start to seem like an especially sexy PDA (that also happens to play media like a champ) as time goes on. That can't hurt.

I actually like the new Nano design.

I just wish they would have kept the 30GB ('classic') model and just redesigned it and dropped the price a bit. I had an iPod mini for a while, but it crapped out on me earlier this year, so I've been kinda looking to replace it with something new.

I agree.  I saw it tonight and it's actually kind of cute.  BUT I do believe just to play videos is stupid.

I have a 30 gig video.  I bought the 80gig "Classic" tonight and plan to sell my 30gig.  I didn't have any problems what so ever with my old one either.  The fact that I've got a nice little & convienent external hard drive that I already bring with me everywhere is what sold me.  Plus, the space for more music and videos is nice.

The iPod Touch, however, is stupid.  I've played with the iPhone a bunch of times and I like it a lot.  It's got a great design and make and it's features are awesome.  In my eyes, if you're dropping that much money on it already there's no reason not to get an iPhone (unless of course you don't have AT&T as a carrier).  8 and 16 gigs are way too small for the video player they're advertising.

Besides, I've got a 120gig MacBook that i bring mostly everywhere anyway, so why would i need the portable internet.

I went through 3 different ipods, they all died (battery or hard drive related) within a year. I got tired of it, got a Zen, and I've never looked back. The aesthetics aren't nearly as nice, but it's not a car, so I really don't care.

I'd consider getting an iphone, but I don't want to switch provider and I don't have the cash.

At three hundred dollars the iPod Touch is the worst idea I've seen Apple ever make. The Nano is a little silly-looking as a square but it conveys the "smaller than the normal iPod" idea well enough. The new all-metal iPod Classic, on the other hand, looks absolutely gorgeous. Since I need a new iPod I'll definitely be shelling out for that.

I never usually say this, but the iPod Touch is nothing but a Gimmick. I mean, £270 for  16GB Touch, while it's £229 for a 160GB Classic. And what extras does the Touch have? A Wider Screen, Wi-Fi for the Store and a pointless Internet Browser. Oh, and the Touch Screen. The Classic has all you need for a Portable Media Player, and all the space to back it up.

I am looking forward to owning a Classic, if and when that comes. My current iPod is on the verge of death and my memory is almost depleted. This is a good piece of hardware. Now Apple needs to turn the iPhone and iTouch into something worthwhile.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't get the appeal of iPods.  From my observation when (not if) something goes wrong, from dead batteries to hard drive failure, they are a major headache.  Plus they're expensive and I think the clickwheel is obnoxious.  I do get that they're usually quite sexy looking, but I go for function over form.  For electronics, anyways.

I know what you mean by the 'sexy' factor, but the truth is, for me at least, that, like tommy just said, I like the fact that I can store all of my media on the thing. That, sir, is function, not form, which is why I think the iPod deserves to be where it is. It is the only mp3 player I can think of that gives you such an amazing amount of storage space for its price.

I've never needed more than 30 GB on me at any one time (but I won't stand for anything less than 16) so the major considerations for me, since I listen to music all the fuckin' time, are battery life and durability, and Apple's just now addressing the problems I've been having with their batteries for years. As for durability, forget about it.

Actually, Apple is excelent at stuff like this.  If you've owned it for over a year, then go buy the damn warranty.  They usually take back anything with little questions asked, and in return you get a brand new one.

Plus, unless your computer is virus-infected or you're throwing dictionaries on top of your iPod, you shouldn't have any major headaches.  And as for the battery life, mine got about 5+ hours of on/off play just about every day and i never had problems with the battery.

I will take the classy cheaper 80GB, thanks, or the touchy when they increase the flash memory. I think my mini is dead now but I will have to go see.

I'm still using my 3rd-generation 15GB iPod. I don't have buttloads of music, so I've just reached the point where I can't sync my entire library to it. Luckily, I don't listen to a great deal of my library on a regular basis. I just spent $20 including shipping on a new battery and after installing it I get better life than I did when the thing was brand new. I'm not planning on trading up for a long time. When I do it will be to a Touch, because I desperately love the multitouch interface and it will make a damned nice PDA/eBook reader. Also, I'm sure by the time I purchase one it will have gone through another round or two of upgrades and have plenty of room for me.

I bought a nano about two months ago, and I desperately want my old Creative Zen Micro back. The menu system is weird (though being used to Creative probably didn't help), if I want to charge it without a computer handy I need to buy an extra charging module, the battery that's supposed to last 24 hours barely lasts 12 (this is after TWO MONTHS mind you, I could understand it if it was 6-12 months, but 60 days? come on), the controls are sluggigh and sometimes directly slow (if I press 'rewind' it sometimes takes up to three seconds before it actually traces rewinds), and sometimes the volume spin wheel seems to revert itself randomly so I turn the volume up instead of down - it's just... argh. I want a different mp3, iPod is stupid and can't handle .wma files.

That said, I know a lot of this is due to what I'm used to, but the fact that I can't even get backup batteries without sending it in to be fixed kind of pisses me off.
I hate ipods, I've used many, I've downloaded music to them, pretty much everything and I prefer the creative mp3's hands down. My favorite is the Creative Zen Vision M, it's just better, its a bit bulkier then the ipod but I don't care I'll take function over form. When it plays pretty much every video format rather then ipods really specific  types and i get a fm radio, a voice recorder and a higher quality screen for about 20 bucks more, I'm buying it.

I believe we have already established that the Ipod is a highly functional machine, and that people who claim the opposite are shrieking crack addicts, jabbing at their computer screens with gnarled tree branches, trying to figure out how to get the demons within out.

Also, the Radio broke on my creative Zen within a few months, rendering it useless. It was actually a pretty good radio while it lasted, but I never used it very much anyway because I basically had more music on it than most radio stations would play in a week.

As much of an Apple fan as I am, I really question what they've been doing of late. The new iMacs suck (specifically because the high-gloss screen makes it basicallly impossible to do accurate graphic design work on them unless you are in a completely darkened room). I don't like the look of the new Nano. Hell, I don't even like how the "iPod Classic" looks- I much prefer the flat faceplate on my iPod Video. The iPod Touch seems completely superfluous to me.

I do really like the iPhone and will probably pick one up sooner or later, but all in all Apple's new products are pretty disappointing.*

The classic iPod seems fine to me although 160gb is totally unnecessary.

bullshit. 160gb is TOTALLY necessary for some people. like myself. who happen to have way more than 160gb of music and get tired of swapping out songs from their 30gb ipods.

if you don't need it, leave it alone, but let's continue to let apple increase storage until i can fit my 200GB of songs and 500GB of movies onto one tiny player. Then, and only then, will I be satisfied.

200GB sounds quite possible. I don't consider myself too fanatic about music, and I have maybe 100GB. I've been watching my collection grow as Apple kept bumping up the max iPod capacity, and I always had more, so I never bought one. I'll probably get a 160GB now that they've finally won the race.

Video is another story, but my eyes are bad enough without me watching video on a 2-inch screen, so mine will just be for music.

I got my 80g video for free. I love finding things in parking lots (I put up found signs for a month... and got a bunch of calls from people who couldn't name one of the 150 songs on the player). I have never paid for an iPod - my first was a green mini from my parents for my eighteenth birthday -  and I don't ever really want to pay for one. For the record, my mini still works fine with decent battery life. I'm going to keep my video until it dies. I never drop it, so it should last quite a while, methinks.

You weren't a little bit curious about why Apple executives keep spiking your drinks and then making you spend hours going through color charts?

As much of an Apple fan as I am, I really question what they've been doing of late. The new iMacs suck (specifically because the high-gloss screen makes it basicallly impossible to do accurate graphic design work on them unless you are in a completely darkened room).

To be fair, the iMac is meant for home users, not graphics design pros.  I can't fault them for catering to the target audience of the machine.  I don't understand the point of the iPod Touch though, it's selling point is that it has a larger screen and doesn't require a contract with AT&T.  My theory is that it's a trick to get more people to buy the iPhone (hey look, it does all that and is a PHONE!)

Sadly, I'm probably going to buy an iPhone this weekend assuming they're in stock, but it took some serious bad luck and a price drop to convince me to spend the cash on it.  Both my cell phone and ancient 4GB mini have been struck down, one by sheer age and the other by the horrors of the cat's water dish :(

SO tom simmaruse. iPods are great, except when they're new and look like they were made in colllabrotation with Tomy, who make chewy children's toys that not even I could hurt myself playing with. In which case, iPods are great anyway beacuse I couldn't hurt mydself playing with one.

I want an uPod. Somebody buy me an uPod?

I saw an ad for the new nanos today. They looked so cute! I want the little green one, or the red one for (product)red.

I bought a previous generation nano product(RED), because I figure, if I am spending the exact same amount of cash on an iPod, I might as well have some of it go to a charity.
