I don't want this to turn into an "OMG OBSKURITEE" contest. Post your honest-to-god five favorite pop songs from the last five years.

The Weakterthans - Our Retired Explorer (2003)
I don't think John Sampson is capable of writing a bad song. For some reason, it reminds me of the mini-road trips I would take when I first got my drivers license at 16 (That was eight years ago).

The Postal Service - Brand New Colony (2003)
This may seem like a cop-out pick, but this record will continue to be relevant for at least another five years. Brand New Colony doesn't really stand out to me for any specific reason. I just always found myself gravitating towards this song when I had the disc on. :-)

Arcade Fire - Une Annee Sans Lumiere (2004)
This song found it's way onto almost every one of my mix CDs for at least 18 months. It reminds me of David Bowie, and I don't really know why.

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Little Dawn (2004)
This is the feel-good song to end all feel-good songs. Power pop meets motown.

Josh Rouse - Come Back (2003)
This is a realllly slick song. When I first heard Josh Rouse, I couldn't get over how smooth his sound was. Ironically, he released a live album a little while later titled "The Smooth Sounds of Josh Rouse". :) I really like this track because of the syncopation... it also has this really cool "call and response" breakdown between a jazz guitar, and a flute.

"Another Morning" - American Music Club
I think I have yet not to feel better after listening to this song.

Something from Keep it Together...possibly "Ramona" or "Careful" - Guster
Haters can go whine in a corner. Keep It Together is a spectacular pop album.

Either "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" or "The Calendar Girl" - Stars
Smooth, pretty, and emotional in a really hip kind of way. Don't look down on me for using a word like "hip." This is the time for all of us to come out of the closet and admit to the world that we actually find such things appealing sometimes, perhaps despite our better judgment.

"Slow Pony Home" - The Weepies
Say I Am You is certainly one of my two top "comfort albums" at the moment, and the other one can't in good conscience be called pop. The melody of this song is one that you just can't resist singing softly to yourself throughout the day. Simple and understated with warm, well-written lyrics.

"Fidelity" - Regina Spektor
If she's sold out, I really can't imagine a better set of songs to sell out on. Damn.

AFI-This Celluloid Dream
Squeezing in just barely since it was released in 2003. Good poppy punk rock. A bit mopey but who cares. It really strikes a chord with me, I'm not too certain why. Emotional teenage years and so on.

The Mercy Cage-Expecting to Fly
Well known NZ industrial band covering a well known NZ rock band. The whole song uses nothing but samples of chickens and yet still manages to be totally badass. Admittedly they have been completely warped and changed. Release earlier this year as part of "She's lost" (www.sheslost.co.nz)

Modern Life Is War-D.E.A.D.R.A.M.O.N.E.S.
Releasedin 2005, it's the classic hardcore song about touring and the rock 'n roll lfestyle. I identify with this song cause it reminds me so much of my late teens... except the touring obviously. It's also a really upbeat party song in my mind. Reminds me of all the awesome basement parties my friends used to have at their flat.

Shai Hulud-Two and Twenty Misfortunes
Released in 2003, brutal metalcore by the band named after a giant sandworm. Two and Twenty is their classic misanthropic track about the downfall of man. I love it cause it's an awesome track. Fast, melodic and nice and heavy. One of the first metalcore tracks I ever heard and I still enjoy it.

N.U.T.E-ROSB(Reflecting on skin and bone)
The very first NZ industrial song I heard. It's evolved pretty massively over N.U.T.E's various incarnations but retained all the pounding synthy goodness that makes it so much awesome. I think it first came out in about 2004? Up there with the best in my opinion.

Tommy, when thinking about songs that could possibly fill such a list, I thought of all of those except the Bonnie 'Prince' Billy one.

These may not be the best songs i've heard, but they have all had a huge impact on how i listen to music

This has to be singles right? I managed to find videos, so you can judge for yourself.

'Letter from an Occupant' - The New Pornographers
'Your Ex-Lover Is Dead' - Stars

Me And Giuliani Down By The School Yard (A True Story) - !!!
All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem (possibly my favourite song of the year)
House of Jealous Lovers - The Rapture

I think the moral is that i learned to love dancing and pop!

Instead of defining pop as 'alll popular music that isn't classical or jazz' or that kind of definition, I'm going for immaculately produced, naggingly catchy, and with credibility and lyrical prowess optional. As such, I pick:

5. Ashlee Simpson - Pieces Of Me: My insane amount of sexual feeling towards this girl has only had a slight effect on my including it. But it was this song that introduced me to her and her glorious rack. However, manufactured though she may be - and related to the woman who defines 'dumb blonde' so well that it's not even funny - this song is written in a classic pop style, produced perfectly and her vocal is strong and distinctive.

4. Paramore - Misery Business: At least I think that's what it's called. The lyrics are only a step above Avril Lavigne level, but this song is like what would result if Avril had talent. Hayley Williams - again a stupidly hot girl - is a talented vocalist, more talented that most people at her age. She has range, power, personality and on this song she showcases it to the full. The backing is a shameless retread of what is now called 'emo,' but it fits, and it sticks with you. It's so infectious that eventually I just couldn't resist it.

3. U2 - Beautiful Day: One of the few U2 songs I can stand, it's a euphoric rush where all of their good elements, minus almost all of their bad ones, fused together to make one of their greatest ever songs.

2. blink-182 - Feeling This: This is the song that taught me how to sing harmonies so I love it for that. However it was also an instantaneous summer classic. The drum machine, the vocal parts, the sexual frustration that characterises and drives it - all amounts to my second favourite pop songs of the past 5 years.

1. Hard-Fi - Hard To Beat: This is a song that sounded virtually perfect from the first time I saw it. Every member of this band seems to be attuned to the others and has nailed down a complimentary part for it. Richard Archer's vocals and lyrics may not be the best, but they're catchy as fuck. It's the rest of the band who's got it down - the guitar riff that starts it all off, the bass part that's a melody of its own like all good basslines should be, and the deceptively simple drums.

Guys, letter from an occupant was released in 2000. As in not "a single from the past five years".

Tried to not say any that have already been said.

5. Cursive - The Recluse
Tim Kasher is the shit. General Cursive blah blah blah WITH SPIDER METAPHORS

4. The Wrens - Faster Gun
So the Meadowlands is definitely one of my favorite albums of all time. Couldn't keep this one off.

3. Radiohead - 2+2=5
Yep. It's a Radiohead song.

2. Blonde Redhead - Equus
Best song about rehabilitation after being trampled by horses ever.

1. Okkervil River - For Real
as is the case with The Wrens The Meadowlands, Black Sheep Boy has been there through thick and thin and to leave this off would be a shame. It's a great song too. WOAH.

5.
Fergie - Fergalicious. This song is probably the most hilarious piece of music I have ever heard. It has been the source of countless inside jokes among me and my friends. I know all the words and will probably know them for a long time. As a result of this song, my friends call me Michaelicious, which I like just fine.

4.
The Blood Brothers - Cecilia and the Silhouette Saloon. For a long time, this was my favourite song. It has been the soundtrack of many road trips and late night parties with my housemates. When I saw these dudes live, they extended the intro out for like 3 minutes until the crowd was basically going insane from the tension. They just wanted to rock out.

3.
They Shoot Horses, Don't They? - Emptyhead. I will never ever get sick of this song. When I first heard it I listened to it on repeat for days. There is something so infectious and exuberant about this band. They put on probably the best live show I have ever seen; the trombonist's fly was down the entire time.

2.
Joanna Newsom - Sadie. Most people I know hate this song. I think it is one of the saddest, most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I was sitting on the city bus listening to this song one day and I listened to it over and over for the whole bus ride trying to figure out why I couldn't stop listening to it. It articulated the strange feelings of impermanence and self-doubt that I had never really experienced before.

1.
Broken Social Scene - Almost Crimes. I can't believe it's been 5 years since I first heard this album. It was a pivotal moment in my life and completely changed the way I listened to music. This album was pretty much the soundtrack for 2 of the best years of my life. My friend and I used to play it on a portable radio and ride our bikes around our small town at 2 o'clock in the morning. This song encapsulates my memories of high school summers; I lost my virginity to this shit. I don't even like Broken Social Scene anymore, but I will always have a soft spot for this song.

Sorry about the novel of a post, but I think this is a really great topic.

PSST Tommys Easter egg is that the last video is actually 'We Built This City' by Starship. Oh how we chortled!

So, I take it from what people have posted in this thread that the definition of pop song that the OP had in mind was 'any music that is not high culture', in which case, I do not see why he could not just say 'songs', as I doubt anyones rocking any classical or jazz from 2005. To be honest, I am confused and unsure what to do with this thread. Are we talking about singles or not? Do songs have to come up to some nebulous, personal idea of pop music? This is a bad thread, I think. Nevertheless I will attempt an answer of sorts.

Angelspit - 100 Percent
Covenant - Call The Ships To Port
The Mercy Cage - Prozac, God and the Atomic Bomb
VNV Nation - Interceptor
Wolfsheim - Approaching Lightspeed

Do songs have to come up to some nebulous, personal idea of pop music?

Yes, singles... as I said in the first post.

I listen to a lot of electronic and jazz, and socialize with a lot of people that do the same, so making the distinction is fairly natural to me. Pop being such a broad of a generalization of music as it is, I think you're over-thinking this thread a tad.

Girls Aloud - Something Kinda Ooh
When Girls Aloud suck they suck hard (like every time they're doing a cover, and there have been so many), but on form they're the greatest girl group on the face of the planet. For quite some time I thought they would never top 'Sound of the Underground' but then they did. The lyrics to this song are some of the most stupendous pop nonsense I've ever heard. "Something kind ooh jumping on my tutu"? A level of ridiculousness matched only by R Kelly.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqFouvUbGpo

R Kelly - Ignition Remix
I think it was summer 2003 when you couldn't go anywhere without hearing this. God that was a good summer, because this is one of the all-time greatest summer party tunes. Aside from the slinky rhythm the true greatness of this song (and all R Kelly's music) is the lyrics. Sure, there are the entertainingly daft bits like "it's like Murder She Wrote once I get you out them clothes" (I don't see the appeal of Jessica Fletcher myself but whatever helps you get it on R) but the really great moments are the ones that are utterly banal, such as when he's telling us the various stages of the night. "Then after the show it's the after party. Then after the party it's the hotel lobby. Then 'round about four you gotta clear the lobby". It's like he wants us to know exactly what's going on and what we can expect (for another good example of this see 'In The Kitchen'). Even if you couldn't care less about all that, if this song doesn't get you moving then you're probably dead inside.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c01HLfWpfY

Panjabi MC - Mundian To Bach Ke (Beware of The Boys)
Originally released in 1998 this single didn't make a big splash until four years later with the Knight Rider remix. I remember walking round the Leeds Mela the year it went big and you couldn't get away from it. Seemingly every stall or stand was blasting it so when you were walking away from one place as it was finishing you'd start to hear the opening mixing in from the next place along. With many songs that would be annoying but as with the aforementioned Ignition Remix it was so good you didn't care. After all, the Knight Rider bassline is killer and Panjabi flows over the top amazingly, really driving the track along.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=6CJjAuKDnQM&mode=related&search=

Dizzee Rascal - Fix Up, Look Sharp
First of all, there's that beat. It's fucking huge. And then there's Dizzee's voice, that distinctive yelp which cuts into the track, chopping it up and throwing you about. The sheer energy of this track is amazing. Sure, there are better songs on Boy In Da Corner, I Luv U for example. But while I Luv U is so cold and sinister it makes black metal sound chirpy this is his pop masterpiece. The video's damn stylish too.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=aLTKGTXR6vI

Melt-Banana - Lost Parts Stinging Me So Cold
The only song on this list which wasn't a chart hit or even a single but sod it. Cell-Scape is the best pop album ever made and this (along with Shield Your Eyes...) is it's most glorious, three minute snatch of perfect pop. I don't mean that in the big wide sense of pop by the way. I mean that in the catchy, really ought to have been a bona fide top forty single sense. Genius.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=L5M5EJbGMfg (not an official video and not that good, but you can hear the song)

And since some might debate that last song being truly pop in the way the rest of these have been and in order to present something more recent, as an alternative number five:
Kelly Clarkson - One Minute
Mike Watt and Kelly Clarkson. I knew there was no way that'd be a bad idea and god damn was I right. This is far jerkier than a former American Idol winner has any right to be. Not that it isn't a straight-up pop rock song, but listen to that chorus. There's something wonderfully off there, something which shouldn't present in a song like this on an album like this. Basically, Kelly Clarkson just shouldn't be as good as she is but she actually keeps getting better with every release. I really wish she'd put this out as a single, but I doubt it. Mind you, My December has very little filler on it unlike her earlier work where there were a lot of terrible tracks, this isn't even far and away the best track on there just my personal favourite.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3JbjSeSHIlA (again, not an official video and not very good)

A single is synonymous with song. I posted the album covers that the respective songs / singles / tracks / jams / tunes can be found on. Are we picking nits, or splitting hairs here at this point?

Calling Ted Leo pop is FAR from a broad generalization. In fact, I find it hard to believe that someone could say they aren't poppy.

Most of the electronic I listen to isn't really all that poppy. Acid Jazz, down tempo... it doesn't have the same feel.

Song and single are far from synonymous.  A single is a track that has been selected by a band for specific release on its own, whereas a song could be taken off an album.  For instance, the Beatles released "Hey Jude" as a single, but it was never found on an album.  A song like "I'm Still Your Fag" by Broken Social Scene would only ever be found on an album release, and would not be considered a single.

2. Speak Slow - Tegan and Sara

Good call, that has to be the best song from So Jealous. Bursts of pop punk coupled with irresistible pop rock sections, and vocals that manage to capture something truly hopeless. It's bloody depressing for a track that really should be upbeat but it always leaves me with a feeling that nothing will work out, nothing will be understood. And those harmonies that always sound like they're reaching for something just out of their grasp... superb pop music.

This is where my relative un-hipster-ness shows! I wanted to choose a few songs that are already too old, like Blink 182 and JEW.

10) The Secret Machines - Nowhere Again http://youtube.com/watch?v=MgDLVC2vdTs
- I guess they were sort of touted as the Pink Floyd of this generation? They never fulfilled that expectation, I think, but they are still an excellent band.

9) Pretty Girls Make Graves - Speakers Push Air http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yeelwuKnCs
-This band was really good for about a 1.5  year stretched, then they sort of died out, and now I believe they broke up. I think they were just too good for their own good.

8) Fountains of Wayne - Stacy's Mom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGUG1aCUY2o&mode=related&search=
-Oh come on, like you didn't like this song a little bit? This is pop in 3 minutes condensed form.

7) M83 - Don't Save Us From The Flames http://youtube.com/watch?v=sEnDMy28hkE
-Great song, even better video. M83's "singles" I find are a ton better than the rest of their songs.

6) Sonic Youth - Incinerate http://youtube.com/watch?v=veucSOXV1F8
- I'm not the biggest fan of Sonic Youth, but this song is pure excellence and the guitar is great. Who can hate this song?!

5) The New Pornographers - Laws Have Changed http://youtube.com/watch?v=jq9-5FjQb8g
-New Pornos are one of the best Indie Pop bands I've ever heard and "Laws Have Changed" is my essential song from them.

4) Cat Power - He War http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZVqNnqEDO8
-Chan Marshall has become one of this generation's best lyricists. This song feels really raw and powerful.

3) Interpol - Obstacle 1 http://youtube.com/watch?v=jkBAUqp6NKg
-Not too sure if this qualifies, as I think TOTBL came out in 01 or 02? Either way, this is the first band I saw live.

2) The Strokes - 12:51 http://youtube.com/watch?v=MsTJ4LDFsMM
- I'm convinced The Strokes are one of the best bands in the last decade...something about their songs just makes me want to have a good time.

1) Voxtrot - The Start of Something http://youtube.com/watch?v=ueFj9V6WWLg
- Voxtrot really disappointed me with their full length, as their previous EPs were so good. This is my favorite song by them.

Shiny Toy Guns-- Le Disco

All American Rejects-- Swing Swing (what can I say?  I was a 14 year old girl jumping up and down and shaking mah groove thing everytime that song came on)

The Killers-- Mr. Brightside (one reason I like this song is because in the music video... Brandon Flowers looked a lot like Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge but with more eyeliner... oh yeah.)

Gorillaz-- Fell Good, Inc.

Gnarles Barkley-- Crazy
