Randall's Island New York
« on: 02 Oct 2007, 18:14 »

Is there anyone in the New York area planning on going to this concert this weekend?
http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/00003EF7DDB6B9A2?artistid=946978&majorcatid=10001&minorcatid=1
The lineup also includes Les Savy Fav and Blonde Redhead.
If you're going, do you know is 3:30 is when the doors open or when the concert starts because I can't find a box office number to call, and the tickets don't say much of anything.

Yeah I'm going.  I know nothing about it though.  How long will this thing be?  When exactly does it start?  How exactly does one get to Randall's Island?

Going too, and really looking forward to it.  If LSF performs anything like their recent NYC concerts, their set is going to be stupendous (and once again Harrignton taint oriented). Given that there are four bands, I'm fairly confident the first opener (prob. Blonde Redhead) will go on at 3:30pm-4:00pm.  For transportation, this is from indiemusic.meetup.com:

I'll be there too. I'm really excited. The Arcade Fire a lot of fun live and I'm sure LCD Soundsystem are a lot of fun. I've never heard Wild Light but Les Savy Fav and Blond Redhead are awesome so it should be a really cool show. As asked above, does anyone know when this might end? I need to get to the west side by 10-10:30. I'm assuming I'll have time but what do you guys think?

This is still a main problem for me too.
Also, Ticketmaster makes it look like 3:30 is when the doors open, and normally bands don't start as soon as people get in.

Wild Light is the first band. Then either LSF or Blonde Redhead, I can't tell

EDIT: Les Savy Fav is the second opener, then Blonde Redhead, LCD Soundsytem, and Arcade Fire.

How is the area where the concert takes place?
I need some opinions on this because I have parents, being 17.
They are protective to certain lengths, and I need reassurances for this because the information on the concert and venue is so scarce.
Do you think the concert will be over before 9:00?

You'll be safe, this ain't Altamont.  Although the concert will probably be over by 9pm, getting back may be a real hassle.  The ferries tend to fill up very quickly if you stay until the end of the last set, ditto with the buses.  If you're driving in that might be a different story.

I know there will be a lot of high school kids, so I don't think age will matter too much (I'm 16).
I feel like anyone who didn't play sports there has no idea what Randall's Island is. Its an island under the Triborough bridge between the Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens. Its most going to be outside and uncovered. When I went the best way to get back was to walk over the Triborough into Manhattan and then to find a cab. The buses get really crowded.

Actually Khar, have you ever watched PBS?
Also, after leaving messages at the box office for a week, I just got a call back.
The concert officially starts around 5, so 3:30 is when the doors open, and the concert ends at 11:00.
Ist good?

I couldn't post because I got home this morning at 3:00, so I fell in bed.
Les Savy Fav was awesome, and so was Blonde Redhead, but LCD Soundsystem was the highlight. I even got champagne thrown all over me by the guitarist. They were genuinely into what they were playing, whereas sometimes you could tell people in other bands were forcing it a little.
Also, where did you guys end up? My friends and I were in the front the whole concert, which was amazing until Win Butler decided to come down to the audience and the whole fucking thing surged forward ontop of me. You can tell there are rapid fans raping you from behind when you aren't jumping, but you end up in the air anyway. I think my flailing arms accidentally smacked Win Butler, and I don't feel bad seeing as how he was the cause of my loss of virginity.

Sounds like you owed him man.  My group was over about 20 yards right of the soundboard.  We had a blanket down and were much enjoying the sitting and lounging between sets.  As good as Arcade Fire were, the walk back over the triborough bridge sucked balls.  There must have been at least 5000 kids on the freakin' walkway at 11:45pm.  Unreal.

I did leave the concert with a question that I don't feel like staying up to research and potentially fail at.
Win Butler stated that this concert was the band's last in New York for four years. The only explanation I can think of for this is recording for a new album. Otherwise, I'm confounded. (I thought that the drummer boy was going to fall. That was such an idiotic thing to do. FELLOW BANdMATE FALLS FROM VENUE TOWER TO HIS DEATH ON FRIEND'S BIRTHDAY.)

Prolly full of shit.  Zach Condon of Beirut told the crowd two weeks ago that he never played a Manhattan venue before.  Who knows why musicians say half the things they do on stage.

I gotta say I am a little bummed that I had to miss this to line up for the Sigur Ros thing across town. I love Blond Redhead to death, my friend said LCD Soundsystem were mind-blowingly good, and I know from experience that Arcade Fire are really awesome and so much fun live. That being said, I don't really like going to shows with that many people. I never have. I really like smaller shows which is why I stick to venues like The First Unitarian Church or the Troc in Philly and the Bowery in NYC. Festival sized shows detract from my enjoyment of the music. I'm sure it was still an amazing time and I am definitely upset that I couldn't go but I'd rather see these bands separately in slightly smaller settings.

This could have been Win's master plan to see how forcibly raped the front row could get by the ravenous fan's in attendance.
There was this older guy in front of me who must have been legally a giant who wasn't affected at all by the surge's. He even stood behind his smaller friend, protecting him in a way.

Also, Wombat, it was quite a time, but I think after the forced insertion of a fangirls groping hand up my butt has made me reconsider these concerts. I think I'm sticking to the smaller venues for a bit.

Well you see the problem here is that even if LCD Soundsystem decides to play a small venue like the Bowery Ballroom (which I think they did last year), the tickets are going to be gone in .000001 seconds and then scalped for >100$ per.  So it's key to find that ideal balance between being actually able to go to the concert, and being compelled to attend with 25,000 people, as there were on Saturday.

As long as I'm with a group, I don't really mind the festival sized audiences.  With only one other person, though, you don't really have the same insulation from the crowd so I don't think they would be as fun.

Sorry about getting kanchoed dude, maybe you should consider one of Pitchfork Media's line of DontMolestMe Concert Chastity Belts (tm),available at an indie music store near you.

EDIT:  I've been looking around and it seems that Win said "a couple" of years on Saturday, and "two years" before that in Columbus, which makes a lot more sense to me than a four years hiatus.

I must of been two people two the right of the guy who filmed this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XJWi6c1n90&mode=related&search=

He came out of nowhere. It was so awesome. I had a security guard right in my face. Tasty.

For the rest of the show I was pretty close to the stage. I met up with Ballard for the day. I almost got one of the drumsticks that was thrown into the crowd.

Within the first 3 minutes of LSF's set, Tim had thrown toys he had got from a dollar store into the crowd, took off his shirt, jumped into the crowd, pranced around like the leader of a marching band, and then chose a lucky person to get down on to ride like a horse. So good. And LCD's 20 minute epic was fucking nuts.

As much as I loved the live rendition of Tribulations, which had me dancing around like a maniac, ending with the cabaret interpretation extended version of New York I Love You was a brilliant act of set-listing.  You could almost see palpable beams of adoration being generated by the heads of the audience and absorbed into James Mercer's crotch.

I'm pretty late.

I'd just like to say, this was the most epic show of my life.

I was hypnotized all through LCD Soundsystem's set. I danced for the entire hour and a half, without stopping. Then I nearly collapsed and watched the whole Arcade Fire set in a sort of blissful, euphoric exhaustion.

Les Savy Fav was beast as well. I really want to see them at a smaller venue now.

Blonde Redhead is a great band but their set was sort of disappointing. Mostly because their pre-recorded bass loops were so obnoxiously loud that I couldn't hear myself think. The air in front of my nose vibrated as I breathed it in. And it was so annoying that I spent the entire set trying not to get a headache.
