SKYCLAD
« on: 09 Oct 2007, 16:24 »

So any way, I realised to my horror that not everyone in the world acknowledges the genius of Skyclad (1990-2001) and therefore I decided to turn this collection of violin featuring tracks I was making into a bit more of a Skyclad primer, to educate the uniniatiated.

DOWNLOAD IT HERE: http://www.sendspace.com/file/odu067

It doesn't partiucularly showcase skyclads whole range: the thrash metal shit is missing, as is the prog. I was more focusing on solid fucking tunes. But it is an awesome collection of material from one of (if not the) most awesome bands ever. EVER. RAWK.

LISTEN TO FUCKING SKYCLAD YOU FUCKS

I will download that in a bit. But i'm skeptical. I have one Skyclad cd; Folkemon I believe, and it's alright....the vocals strike me as kind of corny, though. Granted I've only listened to the first half of the cd because i couldn't get past the corny vocals. Are their other cds any different in that department because i like the music fine enough but the singing on that cd just doesn't do it for me.

Sweet. That video you posted of the thin lizzy cover was the shit, if I didn't say it already.

I ordered the Clan Destined's EP yesterday.
Once it has arrived, I will have (with the exception of Mourning Has Broken) every record Martin Walkyier has appeared on, I think. This makes me very happy.

I actually can't put into words  how great Skyclad are. Everyone should check them out. Full stop.

You have physical copies of Blood for the Blood God, Outrageous Fourtunes and Classix Shape?

Can you supply me with your address and a list of times when you will be out of the house?

Or were we, more dissapointingly, only considering albums?

To my shame, Khar, I don't actually have physical copies of anything Skyclad. I'm going to work on buying them when I actually have money.
I might actually delete all the Skyclad I have on computer and force myself to buy copies of everything.

I wouldn't do that. The majority of their catalogue is out of print. I mean seriously, I only have three physical albums, The Answer Machine, Folkemon and Vintage Whine. I've had Prince of the Poverty Line on order for something like three years. Eventually I'll probably have to sack up and start getting them second-hand.

I think we should start a thread where we all write about Skyclad and upload their albums and then sticky it.

That way we won't have to start going on about how awsome Skyclad are every six months when a new batch of new people invade the forums.

I prefer the current method, we get to start going on about how awesome Skyclad are every six months when a new batch of new people invade the forums.

Skyclad's discography is in the Sendspace thread, is it not?

Maybe they could just change the description of the Music forum to be "Don't be a hipster snob, also <link to Skyclad albums>"

I did in fact upload Skyclad's discog to the Sendspace thread a while ago. The fact that everybody hasn't been talking about them constantly since then tells me that nobody downloaded it.

(The implication is that the only way you wouldn't want to talk about how awesome they are is if you didn't download it at all.)

I downloaded it! Well, the albums I didn't already have. Although I dont think I listened to any of the albums yet, but I have listened to Oui Avant-Garde A chance and Folkemon quite a bit since then, proving that I basically am terrified of new things.

Also am I the only one who likes A Semblance of Normality? It seems the general consensus is that the band started sucking once Walkyier left, but I think its not too bad. Admittedly, I have only listened to half of their discography, but I don't mind it. The new singers style is kind of a little weird compared to the earlier rawer vocals, but it doesn't actively piss me off and the music isn't really any worse to me.

Also, did you know that there are only three Skyclad albums on Oink? How disgraceful. I'm going to run the ones I downloaded from the Sendspace thread through a test to make sure they're fine to upload then upload them next month when my bandwidth opens up again.

Well, of course the music sounds the same. Apart from Aaron Walton on drums they've still got basically the same line-up as Vintage Whine and Folkemon, and if we're talking main song-writing, then Biddle and Ramsey have been working together since Prince of the Poverty Line, so naturally that key guitar/violin interplay is still going to be there. I do think that their production has got very glossy, though in a way it might be an extension of what they were doing before (though after the slightly flat production on Vintage Whine I think Folkemons production was probably their best), I can't help wondering if it has something to do with the fact that their producer is now their vocalist?

The reasons that I personally dislike the new Skyclad is mainly fanboyish crap, I suppose. I think it's exemplified by their behaviour over No Daylights...Nor Heeltaps, in not giving Walkyier song-writing credits in the booklet. As well as being petty and illegal, it basically just sums up the fact that, for me, the band is no longer...authentic, I suppose the word is. A huge part of Skyclad's appeal to me came from Walkyiers lyrics and his emotional attachment to him as he sung them. Hearing Ridley sing songs about Walkyiers GRAND-PARENTS (he did 'No Deposit, No Return' on the NDNH bonus CD) just jars the shit out of me. And this extends into the new material: just look the lyrical style. He's aping Walkyier to a disturbing degree. It doesn't feel like it's someone genuinely talking to you anymore, and, the thing is, if Ridley had been dramatically different, maybe then it just wouldn't have been the 'clad...Maybe what I'm saying is, to me, Walkyier almost IS Skyclad. Though obviously it was never just him, he was the protagonist, if you will.

It's just not right without him. Ridley just can't get the emotion, the connection, that magic something that made Skyclad what they were.

Ooh, okay, Skyclad related query. Anyone got a copy of the Inequality Street video? It seems to have been taken off Youtube.

Also did anyone download my mix? Actually, has anyone whose not listened even replied in this thread yet? Come on people, listen to Skyclad! They are awesome! They have hot lixx and violin solos and songs about factory closures and nazi vampires!
