Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning
« on: 10 Oct 2007, 01:17 »

For the uninitiated, http://www.warhammeronline.com/english/home/index.php.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, known within the community as WAR, is a Player Versus Player centric MMO currently being developed by EA Mythic, formerly Mythic Entertainment, the creators of Dark Age of Camelot. Everyone knows the Warhammer trademark from both table top and PC games, and Games Workship is working with Mythic to develop the game.

There are open sign ups for beta, which you can find on the first link above. However, starting tomorrow Oct 10th, the beta servers are being shut down until the beginning of December at the earliest while they do some much needed work on the game. You can find information about this and the reasons why on many of the links above.

I am a beta tester for those who don't know. You may ask questions, but don't be too put off if I respond mostly with "I can't answer that."

And on that note, for those of you who didn't need to know any of that and have been following the game already, here is some solid NDA breakage from someone who isn't me:

Things seem very bleak for WAR.

I just hope they do not release it until they are 100% done. Though I doubt EA will let them delay it much more. I will still play it... I just like the Warhammer world a lot.

Mythic is hurting very badly for some reason. Word on the street is they are in desperate need of coders and art/animation developers, and they are losing long time, popular and useful CM employees left and right. If you were involved in the DAoC community at all, you know who Sanya and Richard Duffek were and why their talent and dedication is unrivaled. Add to that all the mystery surrounding why these people are suddenly dropping ship out of the blue after a decade of working with the company and you start wanting to break out the tin foil hats and let your mind wander. Sanya at least had the good graces to do some interviews and give us a little piece of mind. She was an amazing woman.

There was a Developer Chat hosted by MMORPG.com on IRC yesterday evening, and in attendance were some of Richard and Sanyas replacements, James Nichols and Missy Hatch. You can read a transcript here: http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/gameId/239/setView/features/loadFeature/1496

Besides the shitty quality of the questions asked by the idiot fanboys, after reading most of the CM responses you will likely feel almost embarassed for them. They certainly don't live up to their predecessors.

Maybe EA is to blame, maybe not. Mythic were making some poor design choices in late game DAoC long before EA ever got involved. [tinfoil hat] Maybe their laid back atmosphere isn't meshing with EA's corporate atmosphere too well. [/tinfol hat]

Here's some new video on how some of the Chaos mutations will work.

Really? It looks kinda boring. As far as I can tell he buffs himself and then hits something for ages, then re-buffs when it wears off. I was so much more excited about it before I formed the opinion that it's using WoW mechanics.

It certainly looks like an MMORPG (read: yawn).

Anything is fun with friends! It's even better if you don't have to shell out for the game and subscriptions and stuff.

What else is it supposed to be? Anyway, good luck to them - but I don't think they'll even come close to World of Warcraft or Lineage.

On what terms? They haven't got a snowball's chance in hell of getting more subs, but making a more compelling and interesting game than WoW, especially by Mythic, it would surprise me if they didn't pull it off.

It's possible, but I wouldn't dis WoW in those areas exactly. I know a lot of people who do care about a good plot and compelling NPCs who do love WoW, and Blizzard can, sometimes, make a decent plot.

Given Mythic's previous work (DAoC) and such I'm not sure how much EA can spoil. I mean, they're pretty good at it, but still... Or maybe I'm just being stupidly optimistic.

edit - fixed tags, I sounded very indignant.

I am going to take this a different way:

"Given Mythic's previous work (DAoC) and such I'm not sure how much EA can spoil. I mean" they screwed DaoC up so much War really doesn't have a leg to stand on.

I don't know if I am the only one that played DaoC recently, but ew. Given the reports that they are short for programmers I don't think there is much hope. (That said, some of the previews do look pretty cool)

You mean WERE capable of making decent plots.  Christ Metzen is everything I hate in a fantasy world designer anymore.  He had awesome ideas at one time, then once his universe got really popular, he caved in to the all-mighty dollar.  Take, for example, the death of Maiev Shadowsong.  YOU KILL HER YOURSELF IN WARCRAFT 3.  But when trying to come up with an idea to help topple Illidan in his Black Temple, someone had the bright idea "let's bring her back for no explainable reason so she can help you out in the fight!"  What the hell, Blizzard.  What the hell, Metzen.  Stop ret-conning the fuck out of your universe, you hackjob.

Technically, it's more like WoW is using Warhammers mechanics.
