Ok, a close friend of mine has a birthday coming up. I say coming up...I mean next week.

She wants me and my guitarist (the other guys in my band can't make it) to play some stuff at her party.

Fair enough.

Here's the problemo... What the hell do we play that sounds decent, leaves us with some dignity, and that can be played without drums, rhythm guitar or a bass? Our band hasn't got enough songs to keep people entertained long (and they're not really the kinda songs that we can play in a flat...if you get what I mean)
So far we have:

Quartet of Five - Taking the Fall

Maaaaaybe Californication

Rise Against - Swing life away

Rise Against - Everchanging (acoustic version)

and that's it.

We were thinking about playing some Tenacious D stuff too, but..I dunno...

You're asking for songs with one guitar and one voice, possibly two voices? Dude, half the songs in the pop music world were written that way, half of them were recorded that way, and most of the rest would be easily altered. Come on, man, why are you having such trouble? I make one suggestion, and one alone, in this post at least - Extreme - 'More Than Words.'

Well yeah, I realise that almost every song can be played without the need for drums. I write songs myself and usually me and the guitarist work them out before showing the rest of the guys (us two go to the same school, only because of that).

Only thing is that without drums or the rest of it...I dunno. It sounds empty. There's too much silence.

Oh, and I don't mean to sound like I'm spazzing out about it either. : D

Then do what I do. Take advantage of the silence. Make your playing as dynamic as possible. Silence, fingerpicking, hard strumming, big chords, picking. Do anything you can to make the instrument more than it is, but then take it away for an a capella final chorus.

Anything Cat Stevens is good. I wonder how "Another Saturday Night" (which is a Sam Cooke song) would sound on just an acoustic guitar.

I notice you mention the D. An excellent choice. They generally have two guitars but as long as your guitarist has the chops to play KG's part it should sound fine. Depending on the tone of the party most of their songs are probably inappropriate though. For the less affronting, there's always Tribute, Wonderboy... Explosivo. Or if you want to freak everyone out play Double Team. Preferably with interpretive dance moves. Everyone will laugh... and then never talk to you again.
