Help with school project on record labels
« on: 08 Nov 2007, 20:48 »

Okay, basically I'm coasting through this topic on what knowledge I already have and Steve Albini's "The Problem With Music."  It's a 9 to 11 minute speech I'm doing on how major labels exploit bands and how they could still function, though maybe not as the monopolizing conglomerates they are, without exploiting bands.  I know a lot about this, I just need at least three more sources, and I'm not having much success with the databases I've been using.  Any help will be appreciated!

Would this blog post be considered a legitimate source for the speech? It's more a diatribe against the major labels and their failures, so I don't know if it would really serve your purposes. Sorry if it isn't any help.

Do you have any sources from the record label side of things? It helps if you can show that you know the other side's argument. Can't help you with where to look, though.

Good luck with that!! That's how they've been functioning since the day they started. It is nigh impossible for leopard to change its spots even aesthetically.

I'm actually doing a similaer report, but procrastinating on it like hell.

I believe Lawrence Lessig's Free Culture has a good amount of info on the topic, but even if it doesnt, read it anyways cuz tis good..
You can find it online if you google it.

Just play the entire K Records catalog

eventually the class will be so twee'd out that they will pretty much accept anything you say

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

You guys aren't helping at all!

back to the database searches, I guess.  I'm trying to find a way to use Our Band Could Be Your Life as a source.

Maybe you can use Steve Job's Thoughts on Music from February?
