Howdy folks! Could you lovely people recommend me good sources of tour dates and what not for decent bands in Montreal? I really like stoner, doom, indi and anything with plenty of distortion (Boris, Pelican, Godspeed come to mind at first..)

Any good online mag?
Know of decent pubs with stages that play good music?

thanks!

Is there a local weekly newspaper where you are?  Those usually have a bunch of ads for upcoming shows.  Also, if you have a last.fm account, there's a feature that finds shows near you based on what you listen to.  However, you have to listen to enough music on your computer to allow the website to track it.

Last.fm is a beautiful thing. Not only does it do almost as good a job as Pandora for finding other tracks you might be into, it lets you search for local shows that match your tastes (or with some very slight change, any show in the area) as recorded by a small plug-in to your music player. It's usually pretty on top of things and does a good job of showing you what's around.

Oh wow, I didn't know Last.fm did that.  I must go think of a user name and sign up!

stillepost.ca is a pretty sweet forum for each major city in Canada, and its members update the listings every so often. I don't know how good it is for Montreal but it is alright for Ottawa; it fills the gaps in last.fm's knowledge (because people have to manually imput those show listings, and around here nobody really does).

Check it out?

I am living in Montreal as well at the moment, and the stillepost board for Montreal has complete concert listings well before they're announced everywhere else.  The message board is also really active with discussion of the shows and of various local bands and happenings around the Montreal music scene.  Of all the major Canadian cities, the Montreal board is probably the most active.

As far as pubs and stages and whatnot, I've yet to properly be on the lookout, though I imagine there are a fair few decent places along St. Laurent.

Here's a direct link to the Montreal stillepost page:  http://www.stillepost.ca/boards/index.php?board=6.0

Thanks a whole bunch for the suggestions, the stillepost forum is pretty darn neat :)

And sadly, none of my music is on my computer :/ Trusty old iPod with Rockbox plugged on the stereo/grado headphones all the time... so no last.fm for me

Pollstar!  You can search by city, venue, band.

If you have a mac, I'm pretty into the on tour widget.  It goes through your iTunes library and lets you look at local shows, however I find it tends to glaze over some pretty big name concerts sometimes.

I'm not sure if these do Canadian show, but tourb.us and SonicLiving have been doing right by me.  I even managed to win a pair of Pogues tickets through SonicLiving.  Woo! Free Pogues!

The stonerrock.com forums have constantly updating threads on live shows that are separated by region.  Good luck finding your area.
