New genre of music: Coldplay
« on: 12 Nov 2007, 12:02 »

Like any normal college student, I spend most of my days stalking my friends via facebook feed. Here's something I saw recently that I found rather humorous:

Coldplay is now their own genre of music. At least, in Oklahoma City. Yes, OKC invents genres.

It's a steal, yes, but the chair looks kind of ugly so I wouldn't really call it a deal.

Facebook isn't smart enough to pick out bands or genres, it just chooses the words that are most used in people's "music" section in their profile.

But yeah that is kinda funny.

Well, it kind of implies that there was more Coldplay than the entire genre of R&B, in that case. Which seems weird. And sad.

4    And Some Rap
5    And Anything That Has More Than One Line Repeated Over And Over Again In The Song
6    And A Lot More
7    All Kinds
8    Akkurat N??; Nelly Furtado - Say It Right

1    U2

5    Counting Crows
6    Billy Joel
7    Green Day
8    Ben Folds

UPenn is disappointingly predictable in this regard.  I personally live in an oasis of obscure music lovers/performers but the majority of the school is, well, what you'd expect from looking at the above list.

Alright, here's my school's list too:

3    Pink Floyd
4    U2
5    Neil Young
6    Led Zeppelin
7    The Fray
8    Coldplay

A lot better than it could be....but damn, I am entirely unaware of this band 'The Fray'. Out of the loop, I guess.

What really confuses me is how Coldplay manages to find its way not only on one list, but practically every single god damned list.

This shouldn't be possible. Obviously our species is simply doomed.

At least, in Oklahoma City. Yes, OKC invents genres.
Hurray for unintended double meanings!

(Maybe the association between 'OKC' and 'OK Computer' isn't as strong for people who don't waste as much time as I do on Ateaseweb.)

OH GOD PLAY YELLOW ONE MORE TIME AND I MAY JUST GO ON A MASSACRE

A guy in my band is under the impression that when we're "practicing", aka covering songs for fun, Coldplay is an acceptable choice.

And, here's my high school's favorite music:
1    Coldplay
2    R&b
3    Rap
4    Pink Floyd
5    Hip Hop
6    Weezer
7    Rock
8    Red Hot Chili Peppers
9    Queen
10    Maroon 5
What oddballs we have.

God damn that's depressing.

On the Kerouack thing, people often add things they've never read/seen/listened to to their favorites for the cool points (see: Pulp Fiction). Kerouack's books are definitely in that category of things.

Ugh... you can tell almost 3/4 of my school are lib arts females...

1    The Killers
2    Coldplay
3    Sublime
4    Rolling Stones
5    Incubus
6    Electronica
7    Deftones
8    Damien Rice
9    Country
10  Classic Rock

Thankfully, the TV Show list at least includes Arrested Development, but then, we actually have an Arrested Development fan club at my university.

You know how I know it's the females that are making this all twisty?

1    Love Actually
2    Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind
3    Top Gun
4    Pulp Fiction
5    Mean Girls
6    Hitch
7    Fight Club
8    The Departed
9    Lord Of The Rings
10    Garden State

Top Gun just... man... that came out of nowhere.

TheFuriousWombat, your book list is better than pretty much all the others posted purely in that it has Austen and Nabokov in the top 5.  I mean, my school's list looks like this:

1.  Harry Potter
2.  The Alchemist
3.  1984
4.  To Kill A Mockingbird
5.  Pride And Prejudice
6.  Memoirs Of A Geisha
7.  Lord Of The Rings
8.  Catcher In The Rye
9.  Le Petit Prince
(Doesn't say a number 10, for whatever reason)

That list really, really makes me sad.

I've heard someone describe Tool as "the Beatles of my generation" to someone. I don't care much either way about Tool (cause I've never listened to them), but I feel pretty strongly that this statement is inaccurate.

5.Bob Marley

5 Reggae

Top Music

6. Bob Marley

WTF Bob Marely? I just don't get reggae.
The "musos" and their weird-ass friends at my school are starting to really get into Bob Marley and Reggae in general. It's really annoying and kinda of ridiculous. For example one of the musos who pretends to be a bogan has strated refferinf to Marley as Bobos Marleos thinking that it sounds really edgy and cool while being funny. Ha,  Keep dreaming PB! :x

I hate it when cliques suddenly switch directions like schools of herring. That totally ruins my Marley love.

Off topic, but I find it strange you have a friend named Casey who's birthday is tomorrow.

Because my name is Casey and my birthday is tomorrow.
