If anyone does gigs in Sydney, I'm always keen to know about them. Including recommendations of other bands. Spamming or not, there isn't a very good forum for live music in Australia. Or at least, I haven't found one... most of them seem pretty narrow genre-wise. I'm pretty into the idea of one thread with recommendations for upcoming gigs.

Triple J gig guide?

But that still isn't very helpful.

I too live Sydney but I still couldn't get to most gigs because i'm underaged.

fasterlouder.com.au has a fairly comprehensive gig guide, although your best bet is still the local street press.

A solution for you;
Go to the city.
Walk find any random bar with any band playing.
Sit down and watch.

It's the easiest and most fun method I've found.
Sometimes you find shitty bands, other times you strike it lucky and find someone you like, then you can track gigs they play through myspace, and bands they like.
And you begin to build up a whole list of bands playing you can go see.
And with each gig comes more bands to enjoy.

Just formed one last night, currently me on electric violin and another guy on guitar - we threw this song together in an hour and a half'ish, would love feedback :) I think we're going to start going more post-rock/experimental, maybe less of the screaming (him) and some more normal singing from me.

The only track on my SocialCode is my band performing live. Please excuse the worst recording quality in the world.

I have am in two bands.  I play lots of shows.  I no longer have a social life.

Inspector Owl
www.myspace.com/inspectorowl

Kid, You'll Move Mountains
www.myspace.com/kidyoullmovemountains

One is kinda dancey and has lots of keyboards, the other i just play guitar in and make lots of weird noises.  Its a good time.

Also to the original poster,  you guys have Giants in your top 8 thingy on myspace.  I don't rememby why, but i know them.  They live in chicago in the summer when they are not a school.  I don't know when i met them though, or even remember it.  I just know there is some connection there.

i play guitar in followed by ghosts. we play post rock (think explosions, mogwai, laura, godspeed) and its pretty fun. we just released an album. the myspace and cdbaby sites are provided. check it out.

Double points cos that title is a Homsar quote.

I should change the title of the track I'm working on to "Hey Reggie, is that Rhinoceros around?". Right now it's "soviet. SOVIET! soviet.".

Wow, lots of good stuff to check out from this thread. I love finding music I might otherwise never hear about in the vast sea of shite that is the interweb.

I am in a band called Aethyrus.
www.aethyrus.com
We play alternative-folk-mope-rock. I guess. I dunno, but it's fun. :D
Our singer, Aerynn, has one of the best voices I've ever heard. We just got a new drummer, so we are in the process of beginning recording again, for the THIRD faxxin time. Le sigh.

I also do a solo music project called Thought Warrior. I just started recording, so hopefully within the next few weeks I'll have a few tracks up. Angry, socially conscious, vegan, anti-human, anti-religion, social-darwinist music.
myspace.com/thoughtwarrior

I just got asked to join a TOOL cover band. So sweet, so very sweet. And I'm recording the majority of bass tracks for two friends solo projects. Between work, music and chasing beautiful women, I have no idea how I have time to sleep. Oh look, I have 3 hours until work. Hooray for me!

"Socially conscious" and "social Darwinist" seem like they would contradict.  Unless you've got satiric intent there, in which case carry on.

I confuse myself with my bands.
My I play bass in a band called "Random Article" (even if you hate our music, you have to give us credit for the wiki reference) which is a kind of prog-rock thing. I don't really know what it is, but prog rock seems to fit best (alternating 9/8 to 6/8 to 9/8 to 2/4).
My other band is an acoustic band with three people. A rhythm guitar/banjo player, a saxophone player, and me on upright bass/lead guitar/bassoon. Yes, bassoon.
Lastly is a kind of a personal side project, which is just me and my (ridiculously good) drummer friend. I have some cool ideas for it (making it into a "musical collective" called "The Allusionists" with a double album with one disk being "A Ton of Bricks" and one being "A Ton of Feathers) but I'm lazy and have shitty work ethic, so for now it's just where I put my "Progternafazz" songs. That's Progressive-Alternative-Funk/Folk-Jazz.
Also, whoever was in The Broken Vinyls, I have to say, I'm impressed.

This is my former guitarist's band. And Mfpole played bass with us a couple of times as well. They make some really good shit.

Bands with the most people in attendance Jan/Feb will be opening for Flogging Molly on St. Patties.  Whether or not you're a Flogging Molly fan, opening for them on St. Patties would be pretty damn cool.

Here's the details-

My band, Ergo B Bag is playing at the Annandale Hotel on Parramatta Road this friday night for those in Sydney, we are headlining a bill with Crooked Fiddle Band and Richard In Your Mind. Its gonna be a whole lot of party, and will no doubt be alot better than the Big Day Out gig during which it started raining and my keyboard was consequently drenched. Electricity and water, always a winning combination.

I've played lots of music in lots of bands that are either now dead or still going strong.  I'll start with the one that isn't gone.

www.myspace.com/energiaband I play bass and sing in this one.  I'm the one with the vocal presence unlike my buddy I play with, heh.
www.myspace.com/takeaction Again, bass and singing.  This is my baby, started as a Subhumans cover band when I was 15 and we eventually made some music that I was quite proud of.
www.myspace.com/wearemice Post punk spaz band, I play drums in this one.

There's an amazing amount of talent in this thread.  Lots of really great stuff.  These forums almost seem like an unreal place, to see so many people like this coming together with so much in common.

Well here ya go, hope you enjoy some of it.

i've played in dozens of bands, my current band is "the radio flyer cowboys" me on bass, lucky/josh on guitar/vox, tatsu mataki on guitar, and justin on drums, we're like explosions in the sky with better distortion and slap bass

i've played in alot of metal bands, which depresses me since i'm a classicaly trained bass player and all i end up doing is playing root notes

my favorite band i played in was "a don juan" unfortunetly our old drummer who kind of made the band died  :(

also jam down at "the clam" playing jazz with some of the older guys

I just recorded this the other day:

http://www.myspace.com/bogotaorkestar

I'm trying to flesh it out to be something of a full band, and with more brass, less accordion/uke.

I can't remember if I posted in here or not. I think I did, but I was being a dick, so it got buh-leeted. Oh well.

This is my little two-man project with my good friend Rueben: The Starfighters. So far we've only got a few songs, most of which are basically just recycled shit I wrote alone 2 or 3 years ago. Rueben's writing vocal melodies and lyrics though, and I'm going to go over to my friend's place to record some drums, so eventually it'll flesh out.

And here is my "I will collaborate with anybody who is game/talented" thing, the Japanese Tapdancing Brigade. Yeah, I uh, I really wasn't kidding about that 'recycled' stuff with the Starfighters. I've polished shit up a lot more since then, though.

Once again, I must remind you that as awesome as The Starfighters are, their name would be more awesome as just "STARFIGHTER."
