Wrock.....
« on: 06 Dec 2007, 09:17 »

no i didn't mistype that...there is a genre of music created by the fans of the Harry Potter series....they refer to themselves as Wiz-rockers or Wrockers for short....and the cool thing is that some of it is very good...the bad thing is that everyone who reads the harry potter series knows about it and tries their hand at making music...and most of it is horrible...for every good wrock band out there there is about 2-3 just completely horrible bands...

some good wrock bands are

The Ministry of Magic - www.myspace.com/ministryofmagicmusic

Draco and the Malfoys - www.myspace.com/dracoandthemalfoysusa

be warned if you want to look into wrock music then you will more than likely come across some very horribly music...tread lightly

It's a pity coonstar doesn't post here anymore, she loves Harry and the Potters.

This kind of reminds me of one of my earliest aborted musical projects 'Abomination Unto Nuggan', which was Pratchett Metal (ie Summoning but with lyrics about the Discworld instead of Middle Earth). We only wrote two songs ('The One Horseman and Three Pedestrians of the Apocralypse' and 'Eighth Son of an Eighth Son') neither of which were ever recorded.

DynamiteKid, I hope you do not feel it remiss of me to suggest that you should confront your anger issues. Is there something troubling you? Perhaps you should seek comfort in the arms of another, or go on a spiritual quest to find your innermost self. If Harry Potter and its fandom bothers you so much, I would suggest you either make some effort to criticise it in a somewhat intelligent way, or maybe not post about it? I know how hard it is with things that annoy you, but we all need to make an effort.

Whilst my post was at least 50% tongue-in-cheek, despite my hatred for Harry Potter and his stealing of my look, I'll gladly agree to to that if you'll not make pissed-and-stoned rants on the forum any more.

Can we talk about the topic and not our posting problems? I, personally, have heard of a lot of these 'wrock' bands and am actually interested in a listen. Does someone--maybe the original poster--want to sendspace any of these? I feel like you might want to Khar. Also, this is completely hypocritical of me to ask you this in this thread Khar, but you posted album art for Cthulhu related christmas albums. Could we get those?

I'm not going to mention those Cthulhu Christmas albums again in this thread because that would be wrong of me to do.
So, let's talk about Wizard Rock guys! What are some good starting places?

You know what would be awesome?

A battle, fisticuffs style, Harry and the Potters vs. Draco and the Malfoys.

I am pretty sure all of the members of both bands are pretty laid-back and not prone to brawling, but I still think it is a funny idea.

I'd make fun of this concept, but I'm not really in a position to claim that these kids are geekier than me. I lost that privelege when I first heard about this and immediately thought "Hey, isn't that already a musical genre in Shadowrun?"

This semester I took a class labeled "Mythology and the Movies" and the professor was a Harry Potter fan to the core.  She actually went so far as to organize a "Harry Potter Day" at the University of Pennsylvania Anthropology Museum.  Since I was taking her course while she was organizing this event, part of my grade was helping to make it happen.  I ended up dressing as a wizard and being the voice of the Sorting Hat, which entailed putting a huge wrinkled hat on a kid's head, yelling "Gryffindor!" and then repeating 500 TIMES.

Anyway, one of the attractions was a Wizard Rock concert, complete with gaggle of high-school girl fans dancing intermittently in a cluster on one side of the auditorium.  There were two acts: a guy who came and placed a model of a Whomping Willow on a chair next to him and played as the band The Whomping Willows and singing songs from the perspective of the tree itself, and two quite attractive girls calling themselves the Moaning Myrtles and singing songs from the perspective of, you guessed it, Moaning Myrtle.  It was pretty entertaining, actually.

I went to see Harry and the Potters/Jason Anderson with a few friends a while back. The whole show was more or less just held in some kid's living room, with everybody either standing around or sitting on the carpet. The kid's mom even came out between the two to let us know that she made lemonade and brownies if anybody was interested.

It was a pretty excellent show, and I ended up getting an album from each of them, but was ultimately disappointed with their recorded material as compared to the live show that both gave.

I sort of went along expecting to be somewhere between mildly amused and confused by the whole ordeal, and I'm sure that if I had simply heard a Harry and the Potters album that would have been the case, but it ended up being fairly awesome, mostly because both Harry and the Potters and Jason Anderson were genuinely interested in playing their respective songs and making sure everybody had a good time.

And although this is a bit off-topic, if anybody gets the chance to see Jason Anderson live, do so. The only way I can explain how he is live is that the only thing I could think about when he was performing was that if a a kids TV host got fired, spiralled into a deep depression, drank a lot, eventually snapped himself out of it and went hobo-style around the country playing music, I'm sure he'd play a live show pretty similarly to Jason Anderson.

Look at who he insulted. Also, you told him off for not contributing, and then did not contribute in anyway productive.
F- SEE ME.

I've only listened to Harry and the Potters, and the recording quality was terrible, which disappointed me, because some of the songs seemed as if they could be cool with better production.

I actually like Wizard Rock!
Some of it sucks, of course, but I mean I find it encouraging that people are finding a creative outlet, you know? And some of the bands are highly entertaing!!

A good site, if you're interested, is wizardrockumentary.com. I do NOT suggest Harry and the Potters!!! I DO suggested Ginny and the Weasleys, Roonild Weezlib (?? I think that's her name anyway), and The Hermione Crookshanks Experience.

Harry and the Potters are overrated, I think. I mean they've got a couple of good songs, but srsly...I found one of their CDs at Borders. NOT COOL. That totally takes the fun right out of it if they are becoming "mainstream" enough to sell their friggin' CDs somewhere other then the internet!

That's just because any band featuring both Jarvis Cocker and Johnny Greenwood was bound to be at least highly entertaining.

People getting into Wrock need to understand that: these are kids! THey don't have fantastic sound equipment --it's just a hobby! I mean, Harry and the Potters and some of the other do HAVE or are getting into using some decent sound equipment, but for the most part, most of these kids are doing this in their free time on allowances from their parents, etc. THey aren't rich yuppies or anything.

I think the poor sound quality adds a lot to the bands though --like Rooild Weezlib would be sooooo less fun to listen to if it had good sound quality! Its' highly entertaining!

...Goddamn it, now I want to pull out my Wrock playlist...grrr..

The description of The Weird Sisters in Goblet of Fire clearly nails them as Bauhaus.

OBSERVE THIS PICTURE OF JK ROWLING I GOT OFF AN INSANE CHRISTIAN WEBSITE SAYING SHE IS A MINION OF THE ANTI-CHRIST:
