8-bit shoegaze/indie (free music inside)
« on: 08 Dec 2007, 05:35 »

NB: this is not mine. I had nothing to do with this. Just spreading the word.

Just saw this posted on the somethingawful forum, given the album a listen and it sounds amazing. I'll copy the guy's description:

Quote
My buddies here in NYC are in this awesome band called The Deprecation Guild. They make really beautiful shoegaze/indie-pop with the harsh electronics of the Nintendo Famicom (Japanese edition of the NES) and guitars/vocals. Today, they have just released their latest album, In Her Gentle Jaws. Normally this would just be a kind of useless post with nowhere to go from, but they have decided (a la Radiohead) to put their entire album up for FREE on a supercool website (http://www.inhergentlejaws.com). It was mastered by Bill Racine who's credits include work with Mercury Rev & The Flaming Lips, so it sounds pretty awesome.

Go here and click the second bar from the left to download :)

Website displayed just fine for me, downloading now.

At first blush, this is a really bad idea....shoegaze being, at least in my mind, layers upon layers of reverb....and they're doing it with a Famicom...? If these dudes are good, I will be SO IMPRESSED.

Listened to a track (3rd bar from the right), they're pretty nice. Downloading the album now!

Not exactly, Radiohead put up a low quality album which you could either pay for or download it for free. Then they released a higher quality album with extra tracks on it, essentially a big fuck you to people who downloaded it, especially those who paid for it.

The title is kind of misleading I'm afraid, they have a guitarist who makes fuzzy noises as well. It's just that one of the more prominent instruments is a Famicom.

Not bad at all for a free album (I'm only two tracks in at the moment though).

Guys if you see a crappy white page update your flash. This seems to have worked for most people. It's not a browser/computer specific thing. The website is just awfully designed.

The dudes in The Depreciation Guild are also in another band called Anamanaguchi that plays instrumental Nintendo power pop kinda stuff.  They have a free EP called Power Supply.  And it is also free.

There's also a song from the upcoming expanded LP version of the thing on their myspace, plus a couple remixes.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

blah blah blah grr in rainbows

Not exactly dude, you set your own price for the downloads, the diskbox comes with extra tracks because it's eighty goddamn dollars and self-released, and my understanding is the proper release of the album in the new year won't have those extra tracks.

I'd say the way this was done was more along the lines of Quote Unquote Records' modus operandi, which is free music with no strings attached, save for a humble request for donations if you like their stuff.  Also, sometimes they get their albums pressed on reasonably-priced vinyl or CDs if demand is high enough.
