Final Fantasy IX discussion thread
« on: 11 Dec 2007, 20:33 »

All the talk on the thread about Aeris dying got me to make this.

I've played alot of FF games (from 2/4 way back on my cousins SNES, and 3/6 on my own), but out of all of them, I can say my favorite was Final Fantasy 9. Why? It was a welcome return to form after the cyberpunk-ness of 7 and 8 (Though I loved Laguna).
Things I liked....

My favorite side quests (Chocobo Hot and Cold)
My favorite Final Fantasy romance (Beatrix and Steiner)
My favorite mini-game (Tetra Master)
My favorite in-game fictional city (Lindblum)
Great, likable characters.
quasi-sympathetic villains (the Black mages, but I enjoyed slicing up Kuja)

If only it had some form of item creation (which i've always liked in games) it would have been perfect in my eyes. What about you guys? What do you think of/remember about this game? Where does it rank in your list of best FF games?

It's by far my least favorite. I hated the character design, couldn't get into the story, and that stupid last boss fight where -GASP- the real enemy comes out of NOWHERE and you have to fight him really irked me.

To say nothing of the gaping plot holes concerning the World Tree or whatever it was.

Then again, I am the only person in the entire world whose favorite in the series was 8, so take my criticisms with a grain of salt.

You are WRONG sir. You are not the only person whose favorite is eight, it is my favorite as well. (Ending sequence with Rinoa's disintegrating face is fucking gold.)

But I liked nine, as well. It was a nice new type of main character, after the angst of Squall and Cloud. It had GREAT music, in my opinion, there was also a much more involved world, Chocobo Hot and Cold was the most worthwhile side-game in FF-dom. It also had the greatest ancilliary storyline, that being Vivi and the Black Mages. Of course, it had its flaws, but I still enjoyed the heck out of it.

Not my favorite, but still good nonetheless.
I really enjoyed the sort of nostalgic feel to the whole game.
And Vivi is one of the better characters in all of FF.

I really enjoyed VIII too.  Once you got past figuring out the junction system, it is really a stellar game.

My personal favorite, however, is VI.
The plot is by far the best of any FF, and the gameplay is also quite fantastic.

I have to admit, I didn't get past the first disc in either 8 or 9. But that's because I never owned a Playstation because I was too young to afford more than one game console back then. I should probably go back to them one day just for perspective, but I don't care all that much.

i have to admit that i belong to the "9 is amongst my favorites and i despise 8" camp. i'm ashamed to admit that i never actually finished 8. i got all the way to the end (or near it) only to discover that it was literally impossible because i didn't do an optional side quest to get some random summon. i forget the details but i disliked that game as soon as i started it (what the fuck is a junction!?) and that was the last straw; i never tried to play it ever again. also, the graphics were fucking horrible but that's only a secondary complaint next to the gameplay and story.

I don't HATE 8, But I do admit I liked Laguna more than Squall, plus, I stopped playing the game because no matter what I did, or what party I took, I could NOT beat that Sorceress with Rinoa trapped in her chest, the constant efforts to do so made me take a break from the game, which was continued till now when other games I wanted to play showed up. In the end, I think Square tried to do too much too soon with this game (especially graphics wise, which didn't look as good as they should have).

I have always said that everybody's complaints about IX are the complaints that I have about VIII. I hate the characters and think that by the end of the game the story is complete nonsense. Not saying that I didn't enjoy it, I did, but it was a messy cakewalk. IX, on the other hand, absolutely charmed me with its characters and story. I also have to say that I LOVE that Necron emerges from nowhere and fucks with you. If you pay attention to what Necron is doing there, chances are you will like him.

I thought 9 was great.  I loved how you learned new skills, and it's probably the most hardcore FF game to date because it's beatable at relatively low levels.  After all, they REWARD you with the best sword for Steiner if you get to a certain point in like 20 hours (on my playthrough, i had like 40 at that point.  It's significantly later in the game.)

I really should go replay it again in a "fastest playthrough possible" way.  Speed runs of long RPGs are fun.

I agree with this, but I only like him because I actually managed to beat him despite the fact that I was underleveled, and wasn't expecting him in the slightest. Probably my favorite RPG boss victory ever.

If I had lost, I probably would have hated him on principle.

If only it had some form of item creation (which i've always liked in games) it would have been perfect in my eyes.
I agree. I mean, if only it had some sort of... synthesis system. That'd have been nice.

Duh! My bad! It's been awhile since I really played the game and I forgot about that! Once again, my bad, sorry.

Am I an ass? Cuz I enjoyed VI, VII, X, and XII (heck, throw in FFT, Vagrant Story, and Chrono Cross too) all terribly much more than VIII and IX, both of which I considered to be the true dark age of the series.

I'm an ass, aren't I.

Just so that I can have some justification, I didn't like VIII because of the Junction system (Draw, draw, draw, draw, draw, draw, draw, draw, draw, draw, draw... draw...) and the lack of any interesting or unique characters. I was soured on IX for the opposite reason: a troupe of freaks and one barely pubescent girl. I also didn't really consider the so-called "return to the roots" as authentic. Frankly, none of the older sprite games felt as kiddy and ridiculous as IX. Sprites look kiddy because of the limitations of pixel art; to make kiddy characters when you have the freedom of polygons is inexcusable. Unless, of course, you're making a game for little kids.

Really really not. 8 has always been my fav of favs.

I still have high regards for 9 but it was so flawed in areas. It felt far more linier compared to the previous incarnations. I didn't like that.

I liked nearly everything about FF IX except for Quana or whatever the heck his name was. I've never been a Blue Mage person and having to eat enemies is just annoying. Especially when I could just take a healer and then Zidane and Freya to constantly rock out 9999 damage with the skills based off of Stealing and killing dragons. When you spend a lot of time leveling up on dragons somewhere, the skill that gets stronger for every dragon you kill is pretty strong.

I never played all the way through 8 because I didn't get a Playstation until IX came out.

I get the feeling that most people think about Final Fantasy IX like this: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2001/08/17

IX's my second favorite in the series. I don't know why, but the first time I played it, I couldn't put it down. I was never able to play through it again, but the first time was really great.

My favorite in the series was 8 too. I don't know why, but it just absolutely sucked me in.

Honestly, apart from the games with the job system, all the other games in the series kind of blur together for me. I went back over 7 and 8 from PC versions I downloaded a little while back and tore through them pretty easily and most of it came back to me (The junction system was a lot more fun than I remembered it being originally, and the Materia system a great deal less), but I really can't remember anything about nine except that the system seemed really boring, the dude had a tail and individuals were assigned a "job" and couldn't change it. Can someone run over the FF IX system for me so I can remember what the hell it was?

I really don't pay attention to the plot in these kinds of things, they're all pretty incomprehensible. Mako Reactors, Time Compression, Worlds Merging, what the shit.
