Personally I prefer a good mead, either a traditional or metheglin, occasionally a sack. Sack is generally a little too sticky and heavy for my tastes though.
Other than that, I like to go for micros or home brews. Gives you a better variation, and we have some killer breweries here in the Pacific Northwest, such as Port Townsend. They have a killer stout and a pretty good winter ale. I sure do miss Muggers brewing company out of southern Idaho though. Had some great ales and you could order just about anything by the growler.
And of course there a quite a few out of Portland that make some decent micros.
I have seen it mentioned and would just like to reinforce that, yes, any light beer is a travesty. Some things just should not be done.
