Who snowboards/skis?
« on: 29 Dec 2007, 05:50 »

I'm going snowboarding today!  Woot!  First time in a while, and I'm super stoked.  Is there anyone else on the Great QC Forums that skis or snowboards?

Cross-country is what I do as well. Lovely fun in the woods climbing mountains and crossing solid lakes. My favorite place in the whole world is Birch Brook nordic ski club up here in Labrador. Honestly, I think I look forwards to seeing it more than most people I knew in high school when I come home.

It's an amazing workout. Amazing.
Tragically, I don't do it too often. My friend summed it up best by saying, in reference to cross country skiing somewhere like southern Ontario (where I now live): "I'm from Labrador. That'd be kind of like making out with a twelve year old."

I go cross-country skiing, but not very often, which is kinda sad, because I like it. I should really do it more often, but well, there's the no snow-issue, and the fact that bringing my skis (is that the plural of ski?) with my when I go from my hometown to where I study and back is a hassle, skiing alone is kinda boring, and tons of other excuses - I should just ignore them all except the no snow one.

I've always wanted to ski or snowboard or something, but there are some issues in that they are expensive and I don't know how to do either.

Rollerskis

I imagined having them would be quite fun, then I thought about how I'd stop at the bottom of the very steep hill down to college. Eeek.

Re: Rollerskis

They look terrifying. I mean, sure, on flat ground they seem kinda cool, but I imagine it's difficult to stop, and that's what is keeping me from using my rollerblades at the moment, because around the student housing complex I live in, there's pretty much nothing but hills, and they go faast.. Which is scary. So I guess I'm kind of a coward, but then again, I'd prefer not to break anything.

And yes, no white Christmas sucks majorly. There was a storm the night before Christmas Eve, and I think it rained the whole day. Woohoo.

Then I start running into things and it stops getting fun

Going skiing is a pretty good sign that you are upper middle class.

Or that you're in the tundra/taiga.

And while the down-hill ski hill back home is a shining example of a small town cornered market business, the cross-country place is run like a commune, with cheap rentals, honour system for payment, and all work being put in by volunteers. It's a pretty sweet place.

P.S. The fact that my ski club is in Labrador, with a population density of about a tenth of a person to the square kilometer, makes me feel good about the many kilometers the ski club spans. It's just kind of a drop in the puddle and nobody is trying to use that land. The caribou are still kicking around.
If Greenland melts and mucks up the gulf stream, though, that'll change everything hereabouts.

The last time I went skiing was when I was eleven. On my last run down the hill before we had to get back to school I separated my knee, and it still gives me problems.

And I still want to go skiing again.

Hey, I went skiing at Sugarbush today, too. We started out at Lincoln Peak and it was really fucking crowded so we drove to Mt. Ellen which was okay. The snow was sort of weird though, wasn't it? It was so lumpy in places and I was having a hard time carving. Not one of my better days. I'm sort of in the midst of a skiing-confidence crisis.

Yeah, I've only got a pass to Mt. Ellen.  The snow was really sticky.  By the end of the day, all of it had been either shaved off or bunched into moguls.  My bindings kept coming loose from my board for some reason.  First my right foot, then my left.

When, roughly, were you there?

Interesting point.

I was actually talking to a friend about how absurd ski/snowboarding clothes are, because basically there is no way anyone is on the mountain in full gear unless they have a fair amount of disposable income. The style, however, is totally urban/hip hop influenced, baggy jackets and pants and other just general thuggery, which makes no sense! There is no logic behind that! Also snowboarders will try to fight you, which is funny.

My boyfriend and his dad are going skiing before all of our breaks end and invited me to go with them. I've never skied before and they offered to get lessons for me, but I don't know. The boy is really good at skiing, so it's not likely to be a day for us to spend together, plus I've heard you have to have pretty good balance to ski.
Plus, I just moved here (here being Colorado) two months ago and I'm not used to the cold like they are. Also, the slopes are suppose to be really steep for beginners. Scary.
So, is it something that's still fun if you're horrible at it?

I got all my ski clothes very cheap from a crap store which basically sells stuff that falls off the back of trucks. They are pretty much 'urban' though.

I went to Sunapee yesterday...
I had to ride down the mtn in one of those ski patrol toboggans. At my house, we have the exact same boots in  ascending sizes (by half sizes). So, by accident, I brought the boots that were a half a size too small for my bindings. Which I found out at the top, when my ski fell off getting off the lift
The superawesome ski patrolmen gave me a little thing that gave me free ski rentals. Which was nice. Even so, I didn't really get back on the slopes until after lunch, when everything was skied (sp?) off and the skis I was on were about 5-10 cm longer than my own. + really long lift lines. So, all in all, it was a pretty crappy day.
Snowboarding...
Tried it once. I could only turn right (zoolander  :-)). the only way I could turn left was if I hugged my instructor from behind and he held me up. otherwise, I just fell.

My ski gear consists of snow pants and a raincoat, with warm clothes underneath, along with gloves and goggles.  I don't think it would qualify as "urban".

I've been skiing twice. The first time in New Zealand and we spent two days skiing The Remarkables. The second time was a week long snow trip with my school. After a week of skiing all day every day, I was incredibly sore at the end of the week and couldn't move for a couple of days. I had fun though!

I've done both Cross Country and Alpine-Alpine is fun as heck, but the whole ski resort thing is kinda off-putting.  Not being a terribly expert skiier, the various places I've been, mostly in PA, kinda blend together into a sort of mental mush.

Cross Country skiing is less exciting but offers much better scenery, particularly when your guide is a local and he knows all the cool forest roads etc.  All my cross-country skiing experience to date (save that time I skiied around town after the big blizzard in '96) has been in the Allegheny highlands of West Virginia between Elkins and Seneca Rocks (Canaan Valley being the main skiing place there, but we went elsewhere).  Though I'd really like to ski elsewhere I can't imagine many lovelier places; this image :http://flickr.com/photos/lwp/38353040/ was taken by some flickr dude fairly near one of the places we went skiing, Gaudineer Knob, and it captures the look of the region pretty well.  We rented skis out of a place called Whitegrass, which was very chill and tiny.
That being said, I am envious of those that have gone cross-country skiing in Labrador.

I spent two weeks snowboarding here last year;

I absolutely love snowboarding, it's my favourite thing ever, more so even then music.
I spend pretty much everything I earn during the winter on snowboarding. Horribly expensive sport but I don't care, 99 times out of 100 it's completely worth it.

There once was this tv comercial for Hall's (i think) where the dad was at the top of the hill and the kids are like "aughh come on dad your bumming us out" next thing he's in a steam room and some russian guy smacks him on the back and tells him "breath BREATH my paisty little friend" after that he's up on the hill again but now actually skiing. I seem to think if i ever go skiing that might be me.

I enjoy snowboarding when I can but not so much skiing, I can do both at a competant level but rite now both my boards are in my dads attic and I just take the boots and hire a board which sucks because I like my flow bindings more than life itself.

Snowboarding is my second or third favourite thing to do ever.
