Hey all. Not sure if this thread should be in the music thing or whatever, or if it's cool to be asking this on here at all. if so, i apologise, you can delete the thread and i'll consider myself duly cautioned. but...

I live in Sydney and don't know anyone who listens to interesting punk music. by punk i definitely do not mean the Hot Damn!/Chrome Hearts hairstyle-punk scene. I mean the DIY scene, music made by people who know who Fugazi are and form bands with similar ethics, etc. For example tonight I'm going to see Ohana, Talons and Dead China Doll. erm. by myself.
however i once heard Fugazi's 'Red Medicine' being played at a pub on Broadway, so i know that such people exist.

I also go to indie shows, but for the most part loathe the Modular scene (Van She/Valentinos etc) because of its sheer wankery. i do like bands like ghosts of television, my disco, love of diagrams, laura, art of fighting, blueline medic, etc etc.

so. I really want a gig buddy, because my only current one is an exchange student, and he's going back to Germany, plus my best friend who shares much of my taste lives in tamworth, NSW

No, this is actually a perfectly good idea. I did the same thing myself years ago on another forum and met a number of people who I'm still good friends with today.

Might be an idea to try somewhere people are more into DIY though, there must be some boards with a decent number of Australians on.

I don't think the OP is specificially looking for a girl to go to shows with (and possibly more).

Also, i think it's okay for this thread to be ini I Like Fish, because it's not actually about music.

suggestion-edit: Why not talk to someone while attending a show? The people who are already there obviously like the music and are also most probably from the area.

This would be a better idea if it meant more people would come to see The Kidney Thieves with me, but I am pretty certain that even if anyone from this forum in my city I was interested in meeting in real life wanted to come to a show and get extremely funky, they would probably think I was a prat anyhow.

haha, thanks all. i realised after i posted this that it would've been a better idea to post this somewhere with more sydneysiders or whatever. but this is the only forum i visit with any regularity, or have a username at)

to negative creep: I tried! i spoke to some dude at the show but he didn't really volunteer anything in the conversation... most people there were friendly enough but still kind of standoffish. and i didn't want to come off as clingy and/or stalker-ish. guess i just have to go to heaps of shows and stike up conversation with people i recognise.

Grammar: a girlfriend is not the point. (although just so you know i'm not kidding myself, that would be kind of cool).

show was awesome.
what was weird was that the next day i was walking up george street telling my friends about this show when i see the singer from the headline band walking past. i told him good gig.
a coincidence? i think so!

and guys, last night i saw brian wilson's band for free in a park. i did not expect to get so bloody HAPPY off that music. but i did. wow.

And I feel for the OP. I really cannot talk to people at shows. Not because I am not a social person but because there is never enough of a social vibe. There's never really a "scene" theres just a bunch of cliques that are kind of closed off. Basically the only way I manage to meet people at shows is if I go for a smoke out the front, there might be some minor small talk and it never pans out to much.

To be fair, this doesn't apply to metal shows in the slightest. Making friends at metal shows is basically a matter of going through a series of initiation rituals like getting as drunk as possible and joining in the massive group singalong to the Judas Priest song coming over the PA between bands.

There are times at a show when there is actually no music playing! Personally I think it is kind of slack of the musicians. When one band finishes, another should immediately start playing! They can't do this because they're all on drugs

During sets, not so much. Except when I'm saying stuff like, "I love [bassist]" or "Man, [song title] is [so awesome/better live/better on record]."

I don't really listen to punk much anymore, but here is my advice anyway! Go to the next Punks' Picnic. These happen in City Park, down the end of King St., Newtown. I think quarterly (?) but my memory is a bit hazy. Usually a very DIY gig with many people drinking long-necks in the sun. Otherwise, try drinking in the Townie. Invariably, you will see everyone from every Sydney punk band ever at 2 am in the Townie.

Otherwise, you could maybe learn three chords on the guitar and form a shitty punk band. It's pretty easy. Then you will have friends interested in the same kind of music.

As well as bands. I found out that my old workmate John went to school with Skybombers, a local band I love and whose bassist I know pretty well. We bonded.
