The album is pretty good too. A bit more ambient than Young Mountain, but thats not a bad thing. By no means a contender for the album of the year, but it's definitely worth a listen.

Haven't they been about to produce another album for the past 4 or so years(at least)? I think that Portishead coming up with a new album is something like Jeff Magnum actually releasing something else: something people get incredibly excited about every once in a while until they realize it's never actually going to happen, and if it ever did everybody would complain that it's not as good as their old stuff because they've built it up so much in their minds that they can't help but be disappointed.

The thing with Portishead is that they are actually going to release an album. They set a tentative date for April of this year as the album's release date. Jeff Mangum, on the other hand, released a Live album, and has said absolutely nothing about a new proper album since he announced Aeroplane. I think there is a difference here.
Also, new My Bloody Valentine this year would be great. This would make me quite happy.

Yeah it was the Ows album. I think it's mostly the vocals that made me think Unicorns and maybe the way some of the melodies didn't really work. Unfortunately not in the same cool fun way that the Unicorns did it.

Wolf Parade has been talking about their 08 album since I saw them in concert in September. They played about 6 songs from it - its a lot more meandering than you would think following Apologies to Queen Mary but so far from what Ive heard I loved it. I think its due sometime out in May

I bought Do You Like Rock Music? by British Sea Power on Friday.

I haven't stopped listening to it since. I can't find words to describe just how incredibly anthemnic, moving, literate and extraordinary this album is. It by turns rocks you out, brings a tear to your eye, and stuns you into silence. It has already left everything else in its wake this year. Simply astounding.

I am actually stunned by just how good it is. Jesus Christ, if this album doesn't make them hit the big time and reach a far wider audience then I just don't know what the fuck is wrong with the world.

American Music Club - The Golden Age

Awesome record. Sure to be in my top ten at the end of the year.

I am looking forward to Weezer, who I miss like anything, Nick Cave, who is probably my favourite ever artist, The Mars Volta, who have one more album to convince me they're any good, Twilight Singers (assuming they're even working on one for this year), Oasis, who apparently will have a ten-minute psychedelic epic on their new album (which by itself convinces me), Eminem, who's not released a record in four years and has plenty to talk about...

I don't know, Encore was pretty rancid. And given his years of silence, any songs about the Bush presidency are going to seem more convenient than bold (I'm looking at you, RATM) The overbearing scatological humor's getting thin as well.

If nothing else, I like the Volta's workrate. They've had a pretty solid eighteen-month gap between each record I think, and even if there's not a great deal of progression (as musicians, some of them don't have anywhere they can really progress...) it beats many other bands who leave three or four year gaps and then release the same old shit.

Dulli has his fingers in many pies. I just usually hope that when you break into the two-year mark since a band's last album, a new record of some sort will hopefully be on the way. One crosses one's fingers and then waits for any news.

As for Eminem, yes, I know Encore was shit. It was horrifically bad, aside from the odd track (and at least one of them was raped by 50 Cent's very presence) but I think that 'You Don't Know' showed that he still has the skills at least. I want him to sign off on a good album. Encore was terrible, and as a last will and testament, it's not good enough.

Man, how does an eighteen-month turnaround rate give them an edge when it's eighteen months before they release the same shit rather than three or four years? A Protestant work ethic alone doesn't make a band worthwhile.

The Mars Volta can go ahead and progress into a stage where they're writing songs again that have a clear beginning, middle and end. They can then top themselves by writing things like hooks and melodies. I'd settle for one moment per song that distinguishes it from its brethren.

*shrug* I'd rule their whole career worthwhile for DeLoused In The Comatorium and 'Cassandra Gemini'. My point was, they give it a go. They keep trying. Even if they're not succeeding in doing anything different - they just keep coming up with more and more obscure concepts and disappearing further up their own arses - they certainly give it a go, whereas too many artists take a slow-and-steady approach to deliberately attempting to duplicate previous success.

Agreed. I mean, granted, Omar is a gifted guitarist, they're all technically proficient musicians, but like their buddies in RHCP, that doesn't get them all that far when they only have a handful of coherent ideas. I gave them another shot and watched their Letterman performance and it was a goddamned trainwreck (though TMV fans I know say it was "epic" and "amazing") The vocalist has surpassed Geddy Lee in prog-falsetto annoyance. And yes, #1 with a bullet on their list of things to do is relearn songcraft. Jam sessions are for old white people.

"Better" by whose definition? Yours? Frances The Mute was their crowning achievement. It's gone downhill from there, but their new album has a little bit of the old frenetic, schizophrenic energy that made them so fun to listen to. They've toned down the ridiculous level of off-the-wall experimentation.

Yeah, better by my definition. I'd have a hard time asking them to be better by another definition.

To clarify my position somewhat, I loved and still love De-Loused In The Comatorium, but from there they've turned into this troupe of buffoons who love jazz saxophone and panning vocals from the left to the right channel in an effort to blow your mind, man. They've disappeared up their own ass - I suppose they're making the music they want to make but that's no more an excuse for them than it is for Nickelback. It's disappointing.
