Let's Be Negative Nellies
« on: 09 Jul 2008, 23:19 »

This upcoming weekend Saskatchewan is once again playing unfortunate space marine host/victim to the face-fucking egg-laying alien spider bastard of a festival that is the Craven Country Jamboree. On top of the awful music which I concede that people are allowed to listen to is the disgusting trash culture that surrounds it, especially because it leads to violence against women. Observe:

Quote
There was a small number of serious incidents reported: five assaults, two assaults with a weapon, four sexual assaults, seven thefts and one break and enter.

Couple that with this tidbit from Statistics Canada:

Quote
Thirty-six percent of female victims of spousal violence and less than 10% of victims of sexual assault reported these crimes to the police in 2004.

That's ten percent in normal cases - the Jamboree is soaked in alcohol and has this really disquieting attitude of objectification towards women. Many dudes go simply because it means they'll probably score. I point this out to people and they accuse me of spoiling their fun. Frankly, I don't give a shit. I don't go and will never go because it will mean endorsing that kind of culture.

This thread is about pointing stuff like that out. Try and make it legit.

So a pop-country festival is a misogynistic boozefest?

No shit.

I'm not quite sure of the specific aim of this thread (get a blog?) but keeping to music festivals, I recently intended the Isle of Wight Festival, and I was very glad my ticket was free. It was the evil, sadistic face of commercialised rock, charging me 3 quid for a cardboard mug of slightly warm Carling and a fiver for a petrol-flavoured hot dog. There were security guards in fucking towers. It was just about the most obvious no fun zone I have ever seen: whenever something that felt like you were actually at a festival happened, a topless dude in a top hat dancing on top of an ice cream truck say, roughly thirty nine burly men would instantly arrive to haul the perpetrator away to who knows what grisly fate. You were not allowed to have fires or barbecues. Carling had a complete alcohol monopoly. There were drug sniffer dogs. I saw a dude get arrested for smoking pot. Crowdsurfing was banned. Most everyone there was not just an arsehole, but a genuine, dyed in the wool, balls to the walls cunt.

Iggy Pop and the Sex Pistols were alright though. Most of the line-up was soul-sucking shite however. The whole situation bought me in mind of Bill Hicks. "Sucking Satans pecker...suck it!"

There are gonna be a couple good acts however I can see them in Nashville without the violence against women
Sex Pistols were alright
I don't see how that's possible, I would say they are without a doubt the worst thing to happen to punk right after the Casualties.

interesting that you highlight the sexual assaults. these are generally not life endangering when compared to weapon assault. do you hold that rape is worse than murder?

I'm gonna kind of go out on a limb here.

Both murder and rape are terrible things, and though no one can really say one is worse then the other, I do think rape could be, as the "rapee" lives past it, and has to suffer with the memory, whereas a dead person, is just dead. Know what I mean?

edit: But now that I think about it, that's almost saying that if you rape someone, then kill them you can get away with only murder charges, because they victim wouldn't remember it...

See, now I'm back where I started, I guess you can't really say which is worse...

We already had a lengthy and contentious debate about rape vs. murder in terms of which is more heinous on here a while back. Let's not revisit that.

On a brighter note, I just returned from 2 1/2 weeks in Europe!

I don't see how that's possible

It's because they're a good, solid rock band with a good stage presence and some great songs. The fact that they were originally (to an extent) assembled as a situationalist performance art project by Malcolm McLaren doesn't really change that. Also before you go all misguided punx purist on me consider the fact that bands ranging from The Clash to Cock Sparrer cite them as influences, and that without the Sex Pistols we very probably wouldn't have had Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, The Smiths, The Fall, The Buzzcocks or Factory Records. In fact, The Sex Pistols catalysed the entire British punk movement and gave impetus and exposure to the huge number of great punk bands that arose from it. You're 19 and American, so I'm gonna say you probably don't have the greatest perspective on it: I've talked to enough old British punks who were around back in the day to know exactly how important the Sex Pistols were.

Punk 77's article on the Pistols

My worries about the Sex Pistols were essentially that they would just be old and embarrasing, but they were still pretty fun. Though to be honest, most of the other geriatric bands I've seen, especially in that vein, have still been awesome: Motorhead, UK Subs, Saxon, Stiff Little Fingers, etc.

how was it? Where did you go?

Spent a day in Dublin, then to Paris and Annecy, in France; Geneva in Switzerland; went to Italy: Venice, Florence, Rome, Milan; Back into the south of France, to go along the Mediterranean coast: Monaco, Nice, Cannes, Marseilles; then into Spain to go to Barcelona, Cordoba and Madrid. Then spent a day in London. Then came home this morning.

Interestingly, my favorite cities were Paris and Madrid, though they're so different from eachother.

Anyway, what the hell is this topic even about?

I don't deny their influence it's just I find the music to be extremely terrible even for punk. Bringing my age and location into this is pretty lame since it has no bearing on the fact that I hate the band and where I live now =/= where I'm from, as far as you know I could in fact have been born in England and my family chose to move to America when I was older.

Right, I claimed they were a tragedy to the genre, which they are, however to make the assumptions you did is simply illogical. An intelligent response would have been to bring up their influence and the fact that you like them and there, not go on about how I wasn't there so I can't possible know what I'm talking about.

Right, I claimed they were a tragedy to the genre, which they are
[/quote]

Except they're not, because they damn near caused half the genre (the UK half) and its eventual evolutions. Only a few bands (Television, New York Dolls) are more important to the creation and propagation of punk as a genre. Plus if you are into punk but don't think Pretty Vacant and God Save the Queen are good songs that is just misplaced snobbery. Seriously. Next you'll claim you don't like The Anti-Nowhere League or Cock Sparrer.

Also, fuck off with hating Type O Negative. Well, pre 1996 anyway.

By the time of Sandinista!, though, they were just all over the place; really not a punk band anymore. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I love the album, and the band.

For a lot of people, The Sex Pistols are one of the main embodiments of punk. If you don't like them, fine, but to say that they didn't have a positive influence on punk is disingenuous.

We've got an entire sub-forum for talking about things like significant milestones in the evolution of punk, guys. This thread is for talking about something else! . . . I'm not exactly sure what, per se, but that's a different matter.

Here is Wilson Pickett performing "Land of 1000 Dances" (ignore the video component, it's irrelevant):

This thread, for those of you who didn't notice yet, is to be used for calling out on bullshit when you see it and raising awareness about things that you feel are important. I thought JC was really onto something with that first post, but the only things I had to add would kick off massive political discussion and derail the thread. Sorta disappointing how it turned out. Like how most people didn't understand the Kenny until Dski literally spelled it out for them, as if it wasn't obvious after the first few Kennys.

Recently, a lot of people have been derailing perfectly acceptable threads just to post about how they don't get it. I think this sort of behaviour is detrimental to the threads they inhabit. Just don't post. Or use google. Or read twice. Whatever it takes, I guess. But I've read far too many post recently that basically amount to "I don't get it" which starts this whole cycle of off-topic-ness with people talking about whatever they want. This now leads to Harry posting youtube links, keep an eye open for those links and use them as an indicator for when you change your behaviour.

If you have literally nothing to say, don't say it! Posting inane things is setting a precedent that leads to a poor standard of behaviour. Maybe.

Historically, there have been some terrible Mods on this forum. An overwhelming majority of them, in fact.

Admittedly I haven't been around as long as you, but I have been around a while and I don't recall any terrible mods. Well other than kieffer being a mod for a little while, and in short order jeph changed his mind on that one. And even then, at the time he was rather the voice of reason in some problem situations.
