Apparently someone in the movie industry confused blogs and other assorted websites saying, "Hey Wall-E kinda looks like Johnny 5" with "we want a remake of Short Circuit."

Is it the recent goal of hollywood to absolutely fucking destroy all of my childhood memories?

I hate to say this, but I'm not really sure you're allowed to play the "destroy my childhood memories" card when we're talking about a movie that prominently featured Steve Guttenberg.

The movie came out when I was four, I believe I first saw it when I was six.  The actors that are in it mean very little to my memories.

Ever seen Diner?  Great movie with a few actors that fall in the Guttenberg category.  Guttenberg, Daniel Stern, Kevin Bacon, and Paul Riser all star in it.  Mickey Rourke as well, but because of Rumble Fish I can't put him in the Guttenberg category.

Oh man.  I loved Short Circuit so, so very much when I was a kid.  The worst part is that you just know they're going to redo the robot all wrong

Was it a "great" movie?  I dont know.  It was a point in my childhood, thats all I remember of it.  A robot with a crazy laser beam on its shoulder who said "Wouldn't-you-like-to-be-a-pepper-too?"

I dont know if it made a lot of money or not.  I would assume the internets talking about it (merely because of passing similarities between the upcoming Wall-E and Johnny 5) had more to do with the idea to remake it, than the amount of money it made at the box office in 1986.

A remake of Robocop?  Sign me the hell up.  Come on, Robocop was freaking terrible, try watching the actual movie and see how dismal and bad it is.  A remake would be totally amazing.

Crocodile Dundee?  I'm torn on this, it would be absolutely amazing IF and ONLY if they could find someone really good to replace Paul Hogan.  He's the only reason this film works and if they can find a replacement for him, everything would be great.

Karate Kid?  If you can sit through Karate Kid (any of them) and then tell me that they couldn't make it a MILLION times better right now then you're totally crazy.

Close: They see an old film that people are/will be nostalgiac about, the dollar sign flashes in their eyes, and they create a remake to get even richer.

The same applies for tv shows -> movies (ie: Transformers, Speed Racer) and the now-passing superhero trend (Spiderman 1-3, The Hulk, The Punisher, Fantastic Four+sequel, Superman, Batman, and that even ****ier stain that was The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen).

Where there is nostalgia, there is money.

Ya know, I had a dream last week where I was on my computer and read an article about how someone dropped a quarter off a building and it hit and killed the lead singer of the Donnas. Yeah, I'm thinking the superhero movie, which has been around for some time now (at least since the 80s) is maturing into a fully fledged genre with staying power. I think its got plenty of juice left to keep it running as an action subgenre for many years.

Right you are. When even atrocious schlock like the 2nd Fantastic Four rakes in substantial sums at the box-office, I don't think this is going away anytime soon.

Frankly, I remember when I was a kid that I though Short Circuit was pretty terrible, even though the robot was cool. I liked some pretty embarrassing movies, too.
