I'm really digging this new album that jeph commented about earlier tonight (They Will Destroy You).  I would consider myself a post-rock fan, I've been through most of the wide-release records for Explosions, GY!BE, Mogwai, A Silver Mt. Zion, Set Fire to Flames, Bell Orchestre and the Red Sparowes.

But I'm hungry for more.  Can anybody throw some more post-rock out there that I might enjoy?

EDIT:  JEPH SEZ I AM ASHOLE SO I FIXES POST

I would consider you a post-rock dabbler since it sounds like you've only encountered or only listen to one "style" of post-rock, but whatever.

If you really want to get into the "genre" as a whole, first go back and get Disco Inferno's DI Go Pop, early Tortoise albums, Slint's Spiderland (duh), everything by Jessamine, Tristeza, Do Make Say Think, Labradford, Pan American (a project by one of Labradford's members), Aix Em Klemm (also Labradford-associated), Papa M's stellar Live From a Shark Cage, The For Carnation's equally astounding self-titled album, Flying Saucer Attack, Third Eye Foundation, Rex, him (not the metal band H.I.M.), Loscil, Windy & Carl, Clear Horizon (collaboration between Jessica Bailiff and Dave Pearce of FSA)...

That should keep you busy for a while.

As far as more recent stuff, Té (Japanese band) is one of the best things to happen in a very long time.

I honestly haven't been too impressed by the last couple Tortoise albums, though they are decent.  My context was trying to explain how to semi-chronologically get into the genre, though, which is why I qualified with "early".

Mogwai is pretty essential- their catalog is decent throughout, but their newest, Mr. Beast, is quite good. I'd give that a spin.

Being that Post rock is really all I listen to anymore, I've discovered a bunch that definitely need mentioning. Soxan Shore, Sparrows Swarm and Sing, This is a Process of a Still Life, Foxhole, We're from Japan!, Ydni Halda, Season, Samuel Jackson Five, Scraps of Tape, Maserati... of course the necessary gy!be and gy!be offshoots and tons of others. What I'd really suggest listening to is This is a Process of a Still Life and Foxhole. If you can, give 'Lamentation' by Foxhole or 'Cross My Heart, Hope You Die' by This is a Process of a Still Life (hell, just give their self titled a listen, it's excellent).

Wow, that was actually obscenely fast.  I have hit up a couple of those others you mentioned, mostly the big names.  I was reluctant to go including anything that sounded remotely similar, especially since a lot in this genre defies classification.  I've...dabbled in Tortoise, heard Spiderland as a matter of right, and actually seen Do Make Say Think live (highly recommended).  But, thanks for the suggestions.  Any more are welcome, I've got a good 20 GB of Ipod to fill.

And sorry about the title.

I actually was going to include them, but didn't want to confuse him by recommending a band that only really had one post-rock album.

RoadForksYou: All the bands I listed are "big names" in the origins of post-rock.  And they represent a very diverse selection of sounds.  I was trying to steer you away from just "post-rock that sounds like GY!BE, Mogwai, EitS, Mono, etc."

I cannot recommend Rex's first album enough.  It's what you would get if you crossed Slint with folk music, roughly speaking.

September Malevolence, Ellis the Vacuum Child, Loss of a Child, The American Dollar, The Ascent of Everest, Because of Ghosts, Blue States, Te, Boy is Fiction, Grails, Six Parts Seven, Migala, Caspian, Clogs, Rachel's, Efterklang, French Teen Idol, From the Sky, Of Sinking Ships, Friends in the Mountains, Japancakes, We're From Japan and Joy Wants Eternity are ones that don't seem to have been mentioned and come to mind immediately w/o any itunes browsing. I can recommend all of them highly. Much of my 100gb library is post-rock/ambient music so if this list doesn't do it I can throw out some more.

Call me a dabbler all you want... after watching Heima, I'm certain I will never need anything more than Sigur Rós. And maybe Explosions because we share a hometown so I have to root for them. And maybe Mono because they blew my freaking mind one day a while back.

On the more hardcore end of post-rock, Envy and City of Caterpillar are pretty good.

Edit: Agalloch hasn't been mentioned either. It should not take this long to mention Agalloch.
They're what happens when you take post-rock, folk, and black metal and mush it all together. It's awesomeness.

Moar edit: Beth I like your band too. You guys sound tasty. Come to DC and I'll watch you play music! I promise!

I like the two newer songs, which I would place far more in the "shoegazer" direction than anything else.  The two older songs on the page, which are more "post-rocky", are okay but not exceptional.  Stick with the new sound.

Zerodrone I honestly do not have it in for you. You are a useful contributor to this forum! It just frustrates me when you take what would be a really useful, informative post (like your first one in this thread) and tack on a completely unnecessary insult. I don't think you even MEANT it as an insult, but can you at least see why it could be taken as such? Calling someone who is interested in post-rock but not thoroughly versed in all its diverse sounds a "dabbler" may be semantically correct, but it's still kind of rude, and not useful to anyone. I would like this board to be a welcoming place to people new to the music we collectively like. I'm not saying you have to completely censor your opinions or couch them in nicey-nice talk, I would just appreciate it if you'd be more aware of the different ways some of your statements can be interpreted.

As for comparing your treatment to other forum people's treatment, I am riding you harder because I know you can be better! It's not fair, certainly, but I am a petty tyrant.

Hate to be nit-picky but Helios is just one guy, Keith Kenniff (a la Eluvium, Tim Hecker, Max Richter, Loscil, Xela, The Dead Texan, Jasper T.X., and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma all of whom, by the way, I recommend highly to anyone interested in ambient experimentations).

all its diverse sound

So, being such a...dabbler in post-rock, I guess I don't have any appraisal of what might be considered the different "sounds" of post-rock. I'm reluctant to ask you to break it into sub-genres, but rather, what would you say the different sounds are (and some examples for each).

Well, at least you admit it.  As long as you don't start deleting my posts I don't really care, anyway.

Instead of saying I fucked up a post with assholery, why couldn't you have said the same thing in a nicer way, like you just did?  If someone sees ZOMG THE CREATOR HIMSELF dissing me, especially someone new, they're more likely to form an opinion that I'm someone it is acceptable to dogg on.  And that's not cool.  Dogg.

I'm going to be hated for this but, while I respect the things that Boris does, I don't personally care much for their music. I do, however, like most of the other bands mentioned in this thread.

So there we are. One dissenter at least.

sgt. haven't been mentioned.  Neither have Laura.  They're both awesome.

Also, Ahkmed, Leech, La Otracina, Alasehir, Thumlock, Bossk, Shora, Ten East, Galacticka, Surface of Eceyon, Guapo, Subarachnoid Space, and most of 35007's albums are all great if you like some psychedelic flavoring in your post-rock ramen.

I will be honest, and say I didn't find anything particularly harsh or derogatory about his post.  However, I think you're making a generalization here, Zerodrone.  Some people just jump to conclusions by nature.  We could ask them not to, but I don't think they're inherently going to know.

I'm not saying you're a bad guy at all, and frankly, I wouldn't have called you out for it on any given day.

Back on topic, I guess Stereolab are considered post-rock.  You could check them out.

Okay I remembered another group: El Ten Eleven.

They are very good. They are not all like zomg we shall now tremolo pick you to death kthx. They are different.

Ooooh, I love El Ten Eleven.  They are one of the things I miss most about living on the West Coast.  Nothing beats a two-headed guitar, except maybe a guitar/keytar combination.

We are changing On Fire's name to Eksi Ekso, which is a bastardization of Greek words. The official change happens in March.
Thank you so much to whomever has listened to our tracks, and the compliments.  Maybe we can make it to DC sometime in the not to distant future, it is not all that far from the North East.

You'd probably like Boris somewhat, they're similar to Kyuss, just less stonery (by this I mean they're faster).

Yeah, I don't particularly care for Boris either. And while I don't have any Joy Division to listen to regularly, I am pretty sure I like what I've heard before.

Laura

This is an excellent suggestion.
World's End Girlfriend is also fantastic although his CDs are really hard to find in the U.S. and, I would imagine, a lot of other countries outside of Japan.

I dislike Boris and adore Joy Division.

Got a Te album the other day on the strength of the ridiculous track names alone, must get around to listening to that.

The American release of the Té album has slightly less ridiculous song names.  I'm pretty sure whoever came up with the original translations just fed the Japanese into babelfish.

I second this.  I don't know where those ridiculous song titles came from, but I put them in parenthesis next to the actual titles because I thought they were funny.  But it is a good album.  I enjoyed it a lot.

And Zerodrone, because of all of the Zerodrone attention in this thread I thought I would say sorry for getting angry with you in whatever that other thread was.  Kiss and make up?     I don't think you are a bad guy either.  I particular appreciate your comments in the music forum as you obviously know what you are talking about.  People that know things are obviously a benefit to me, as I probably have something to learn.

When we form our cuddlecore band, can we be like The Kills and get as close to having sex onstage as legally possible?
