So I'm listening to 'This Will Destroy You' and what immediately strikes me is how similar the main riff of the first song (A Three Legged Workhorse) is to a Múm song from 'Finally We Are No One'.

I have no idea if this has been brought up before or if it's a homage, just struck me as kind of strange.

I neglected to mention Sandro Perri's solo work, notably that under the Polmo Polpo moniker. Released by Constellation (the Do Make Say Thin, Silver Mt. Zion, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Hrsta, Fly Pan Am and several others), the album 'Likes Hearts Swelling' is an album I would call a masterpiece without any hesitation. A rolling, fuzzy haze of sound with strings spilling in and out amongst the noise, this is certainly one of the better ambient albums in my collection. I'd be happy to upload it if there's any interest.

I know I mentioned Xela before but his album 'The Dead Sea' is probably the best avant-garde noise album from the past couple years. Could up that as well if anyone wants.

I dunno, I've always thought that post rock was perhaps too broad of a genre name. For the classic example, we are lumping Tortoise and Mogwai into the same genre. And the genre really hasn't hit a point like metal were there are 43543198 different sub-genres and the term metal is used as an all-encompassing name for the sub-genre's as a whole. 

Or maybe it has hit that point. I once got a monthly e-mail from eMusic referring to Explosions in the Sky/Mono type bands as crescendo-core. It was highly disturbing.

Post-rock is a very broad genre.  This is not a bad thing, because it saves having too many subgenres.

Tortoise and Mogwai are far more similar than, say, Slint and Flying Saucer Attack.

I really dislike the term post-rock in general but I'm not sure what else to use. Certainly Rachel's and If These Trees Could Talk, for example, are two vastly different groups with almost nothing in common. Somehow they've both found their way under the post-rock umbrella, however. The dangerous thing about this is that somehow will hear a couple similar sounding post-rock bands and come to associate the entire genre with that sound thus ignoring thousands of bands with different styles if they didn't like that sound or being confused and overwhelmed when they find how many different post-rock sounds there are if they decide to explore the genre in more depth. I really think some new categories or genres are needed. Something to distinguish between the wildly different approaches to post-rock. At the same time, as was said, we definitely don't want a million absurd sub-genres popping up all over the place. It's a dilemma, that's for sure. For now I will grudgingly stick to the post-rock moniker.

This is actually the thing I love most about the post-rock name. It's evolution so far has allowed us just to differentiate post-rock's different sounds by our own words than a set sub-genre. I wish more music was like that...
