Voting is Rad!
« on: 04 Feb 2008, 23:54 »

OK, this thread is just a reminder to everyone that today, February 5th, is Super Tuesday, also known as the largest and most significant day of primary elections in the United States. If you are 18, registered to vote, and live in the following states:

Alabama
Alaska
Arizona
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Connecticut
Delaware
Georgia
Idaho
Illinois
Kansas
Massachusetts
Minnesota
Missouri
Montana
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
North Dakota
Oklahoma
Tennessee
Utah
West Virginia

Then your state is holding its election tomorrow! Check your state's website for polling places nearby, and many of them have special rules allowing you to change your affiliation when you vote if you would prefer to vote in a different primary than the one you're registered in. Or, if you're registered as an independent, make sure you know whether you are eligible to vote in the Democratic or Republican contests. Depending on your state, you may be able to vote in neither, one, or both. If you want to vote but haven't decided on a candidate yet, I would humbly suggest http://www.ontheissues.org/default.htm as a good place to find all of the candidates and decide which one lines up most with your own political beliefs.  There's still plenty of time to do some research, as polls usually stay open until 8 PM on your local time. This is not the place for discussion of the relative merits of the individual candidates, because the last thing I want is for this thread to get locked. This thread's only purpose is to encourage everyone to exercise your civic duty and vote. Voter apathy is a huge problem in America, and refusing to vote just because the candidates don't 'represent you' is just encouraging complicity to constant dissatisfaction with the system and just prevents us as a whole from changing government for the better. So regardless of which party or person you support, voting is important! Especially for young people (which make up a large portion of us here) who want to have their voices heard.

Again, let's please not make this into a flame war about Candidates X or Y, this is just a reminder about contributing to the democratic process, especially in two very close contests on both sides.

Also, a note about the link I provided: Rudy Guiliani has officially dropped out of the race, so while his name will still be on the ballot, he will be ineligible for any delegates from the states in this election. Furthermore, Alan Keyes is only on the ballot in a small number of states, so be aware that his candidacy is not valid on the national scale.

Maryland is not on that list, and thus I will not be voting tomorrow. However, I still encourage others to vote as well. Go Democracy, Yay!

LISTEN UP, PEOPLE.

As we all know, the forum rules specifically prohibit political discussions. But democracy is important! (Outside this forum, that is.) So I'm okay with this thread existing, but at the first instance of praising or criticising specific candidates, I will lock it. Without hesitation. Unless god himself (i.e., Jeph) comes in and tells me not to. So don't be responsible for getting a thread locked! Just get out there and vote. Vote proud, vote strong, vote often don't vote often, because that's illegal.

And don't try and test me on this.

There is no primary for independents! They either decide their nominees internally or the candidate runs without the support of a party.

I am too stupid (i.e. 17) to vote, apparently.

Last time I voted, the sun was shining, there was a barbecue at the polling place, somebody's pet dog was inside the polling place waiting for its owner to finish voting, kids were playing on the street, and I ate some excellent gelati on the walk back home.

Last time I voted I was sent to another polling place because I live on the wrong side of the street. It started raining and then later I went to a really bad party. Next election better be more awesome. Maybe I'll go to the movies.

Last time I voted I was treated to the unintentional comedy of a really stupid couple barging in the "OUT" door, ignoring all the very clear signs telling you where to go and asking the nearest official-looking person "hey mate, where can we vote in here?"

Later there was coffee.

I'm presently boned on voting. I am legally registered to vote in NH and was unable to make it up for the NH primaries. I was unable to switch my voter registration to MA as I have been unable to change my license over due to some restriction on my NH license I still haven't had explained to me. Hopefully my shit is all sorted out by November.

I am probably gonna vote, but the polling place is rather far and I'd be walking. I mean, that wouldn't stop me from voting in the general election, but this is a primary, plus I live in Illinois which is pretty much guaranteed to go to Obama.

WHY DO YOU GET STICKERS?

You see, with declining voter turnout in virtually every polling district, they had to find some kind of incentive to have people vote.

It turns out that the only thing Americans love more than soft drinks and obesity is low grade adhesives attached to paper.

But none of that "citrus-scented" shit. It always smells like Pinesol.

Anyway, I'm really excited about being able to vote. I've always been extremely politically active and interested in politics and current events. Living in Wisconsin, I figured that the primary here wouldn't could for anything, since it's a month after "super Tuesday." But on the Democratic side at least, it looks like things will go on until at least then. So maybe my vote will actually count for something.

In an ill-advised fit of interest I decided to check out what the American networks were showing. Everything I need to know about American politics, I get from TV, and tonight is no exception:

ABC - Super Tuesday coverage.
NBC - Super Tuesday coverage.
CBS - Super Tuesday coverage.
Fox - a rerun of House.

P.S. I found it interesting that Ron Paul was not only mentioned by CNN, but he also garnered about 3-4% on average. I'm not going to comment on his policies one way or the other because that's not what this thread is about, but frankly it's good that as an independent he got any votes at all, let alone a few thousand per state. Am I naive in thinking that's encouraging?

When I voted it was stinking hot and I got given the evil eye by a bunch of old Liberal Party ladies who could obviously tell I was from the "loony left" by my long hair and sexual swagger. Also it was at a hospital and those places are fucking depressing no matter why you're there.
