Going down a flight of stairs is tough in anything taller than one inch, so in that case they are pretty impractical.

I cannot express my utter abhorrence of flats. I have never seen someone look good in them. Short girls look stumpy and childish, tall girls look like they're ashamed of their height and insecure.
I'm sorry if you're one of those girls who like them, but there are much better looking flat shoes if you want comfort and much better looking heels if you want pretty.

I think flats are fine for pants, but definitely iffy with skirts or dresses. Then it depends on the style of the the shoes, skirt, and how good the girl's legs are. No two ways about it, heels make your legs look nicer. So good legs can pull off flats easier. And I think they're okay with casual, summery dresses/skirts. Sometimes in the summer I just wear a t-shirt, skirt and flip-flops. But flats with formal wear make me think of old ladies whose knees are too bad for heels, who own custom made shoe inserts, prescription sneakers, and moccasins.

Going down any stairs should not be that bad if you have decent shoes.

Flats are icky looking, and I have to agree with Manda. If you want flat-soled things, there are sneakers, trainers, athletic shoes, Burks, Docs, Chacos, and even Tevas.

Also, jesus, did no one else see Kinky Boots? Heels do change how you look: they elongate the leg, accentuate the calf (and make the leg look more curvy), and cause the pelvis to tilt. I believe the line is "Look to the heel. The sex is in the heel ... Stilettos require constant balance from the upper leg causing the muscles of the backside to tense and appear pert and ready for mating".

Honestly, all those flat soled things you listed generally just look ugly. Flats are the best option for flat soled shoes.

Wait, so "flats" are a specific type of shoe?  Not just any shoe with a flat sole?  I'm so confused.  Remind me never to enter a fashion related thread again, I just don't belong here.

From my experience flats only make you look stumpy if you wear them with the wrong outfit.

Heels aren't the go-to shoe either though. Srsly? Look at the girls walking around the Bllok if you ever get the chance to come over here. I don't care how nice your bum is, skinny jeans (read: jeans) and heels really do not go together, no exceptions.

Skinny jeans do not go with anything. Most importantly, though, skinny jeans and ballet flats is the most ridiculous silhouette I've seen recently.

Except Uggs. But that is a different story.

Only topped in awesomeness by these:
http://www.heelsforyou.com/Images/Demonia-2-28-web/SCE100-B.jpg

My girlfriend has these exact boots. I also have like two pairs of Demonia boots, they are awesome quality and really comfortable. Ingelise has about 4 pairs of Demonias I think, all with varying heels.

No, because see, not only do the flats do absolutely nothing for your feet or legs, and often are attributed knee problems and collapsed arches because most people walk with too much of their weight on their heels anyway, but the jeans themselves don't have enough cloth to hide or disguise anything and only contribute just enough fabric to obscure your lovely curves at the knees and ankles, so basically your legs look like they taper straight down.

It is my personal opinion that skinny jeans should only be for wearing under tall boots, the way they were designed.

She speaks the truth.

The only shoes that look ridiculous at all times are those stupid furry boots that look like you gutted a persian and slipped it's skin around your foot.  Seriously ladies, why do you buy those things?

Ally makes a very good point.

Lightguy; I think originally it was because they were warm and no-one would see them 'coz you'd just wear them around the house. Then I'd imagine there were a few too many cases of people not having enough time to put proper shoes on or just going to get petrol and it's not really worth putting shoes on and then someone thought that these people were doing it by choice instead of because they were just popping out for five minutes.

Katie; I'll agree that you'll never pull off classicly beautiful with flats and skinny jeans but you can certainly do the cute-indie-chick look.

Few people pull of skinny jeans. These people are those people with awesome legs. Personally, I think everyone should just wear bootcut jeans...

I happen to like flats much more than heels. And there are ugly shoes in every category of shoe. Personally, I like boots that are from mid-calf to knee-high, but Uggs are the ugliest shoes on the face of the planet. I also think most flats look better than most heels, so it's all personal preference.

You sir are an uncultured boor. Shoes make an enormous amount of difference.

As far as Uggs, last weekend my gf and I spent much of Saturday giggling at and counting how many women we passed who were wearing running pants and Uggs. It started when she noted that that way ugly combo was surprisingly common in Chicago.

What are uggs? I've never heard of these.

This might just be me, but I absolutely cannot stand ballet slipper shoes and the fact that they invented the Toe Crack. There is just something really unattractive about seeing nothing on someone's foot except for the crack between the big toe and second big toe peeking out from the top of the shoe.

You're right about that one. I won't buy any form of dress shoe unless it covers that area. It's just weird to be able to see where people's toes begin without seeing their toes.

Feet mostly make me think of well, feet. They're so asexual to me that it took me quite a while to pick up on the whole Tarantino foot fetish thing (which is funny because it was so blindingly obvious in retrospect). I think shoes can look good and all and they can certainly do great things for a silhouette, but the Toe Crack=Cleavage! theory makes me think someone was running out of ways to pimp their line of ballet flats.

omg I thought I was the only one who thinks it looks weird when the shoe doesn't cover the toes completely. It looks incomplete. I actually like the look of flats a lot, but the whole toe-crack thing looks odd. Refer to lunchy's photo; not all flats do that, it is not a defining feature of that shoe type.

Dude you would not even wear Uggs out in 20 ºF weather because seriously if it is that cold chances are the weather is nasty too and those boots are not weatherproof at all. They do not even have a waterproof seal under the nasty furry shit.

Uggs are UGGH.

I don't wear boots unless I am going to be outside for more than half and hour at a time and it is below zero. Then I bust out my farmer boots and actually keep my feet warm.

I do not have boots and that is ridiculously stupid given the conditions out right now (alternating heavy snow and heavy rain, resulting in giant mounds of slush everywhere.) My gf walks around in her cute galoshes and makes fun of me.

Where did those skull and crossbones galoshes come from? I'm pretty sure she would forgive every mistake I have ever made and ever will make if I got her those.

Also, none of your galoshes pictures involve a girl in a peacoat holding an umbrella while looking at the sky pensively. This is important.

They serve no practice purpose, not even in video games.
The practical purpose of high heeled shoes is so that you can threaten to puncture someone's skull by stepping on them, like in Heroes.
Or you could just do a Rosa Klebb, get a blade inside your shoe. A combat boot would have plenty of room, and would also have the awesomeness of being a combat boot. Then again, I am biased, I have had a pair of paratrooper boots just about permanently affixed to me feet since October.

Uggs are horrible though, don't understand why anyone likes them. I have seen people wearing them around campus, but that makes some sense, since around here, the temperatures go beneath 50 degrees, unlike L.A.

Guys, feet are gross. If I never had to look at feet ever again (including my own), I would be happy. Shoes cover feet, so they are good!

That being said, Ugg boots are disgusting. The ugg boot-mini skirt (rolls of fat) combo is all too common around here, so I get to see it very often! I am on the hunt for a nice pair of big stompy boots to wear everywhere because then I will be tough and stompy.

I have Ugg slippers for indoors. They are about as pretty as a train wreck but they are comfortable as eff and no matter how cold it is my feet are ALWAYS warm.

For everyday stuff I wear one of my two pairs of black Chucks, typically the pair that I've had more time to break in. Broken-in Chucks really are The Greatest Thing.

I just find it funny that despite all the snow on the ground here in Minnesota I have to log onto the internet to see lots of girls (I'd say women, but I think uggs-in-public is pretty much an instant disqualification from adulthood) running around in big ass boots.

That's because people in Minnesota are generally used to the cold and don't feel the need to wear boots. And mostly we're not dumb enough to wear Uggs. I say mostly because I have seen it a few times.

My friend Mark once paired Uggs with fishnets, but that was on Halloween. Scariest costume I've ever seen. He's not a small man. Well, actually, he's kind of short, but he could definitely stand to lose some weight... Other than that though, I've only seen a handful of people wearing uggs.

heels heels heels i love them and i can't wait to live in a place with no cobblestones so i can wear heels every day!
i also love skinny jeans.
i do not love flats but they are more practical than heels so i wear them anyways.

i was going to stop buying high heels but this thread makes me want to go buy a new pair RIGHT NOW. :(

I've been there! My sister was playing in a softball tournament so I went along to watch. It was pretty nice I guess.

I am from Battle Lake. Bonus points if you know where it is.

Afraid not. There's so many towns that use lakes as distinguishing characteristics in this state that they all kind of become a blur to me.

Austin's not so bad, really, I just whine sometimes because it's rather lacking in some of the things that I like best about Minnesota. It's practically Iowa, honestly; a couple rivers but our only lakes in this county are shallow and man made while the surrounding area is really, really flat, so there's not much to look at but soybeans. Could be worse though; it's not like you have to travel all that far for decent lakeside scenery in Minnesota no matter where you're at.

Enough about Minnesota. Back to shoes.

Favorite pair of flats. Though I have worn these with a skirt, I prefer to wear them with pants. Kitten heels are much more flattering with skirts.

Yeah, and apparently dangerous too.  My boss wore them a couple years ago out dancing, and she broke her ankle.  She repeated the same exact thing just last summer.  She usually has no issue with heels.  Just kitten heels.
