Liz, get your own fucking tiles.

As for those Chucks, well, you could, like, go buy a new pair and break them in by hiking in them every weekend for half a year. That's what I've done with the pair I am wearing right now. They are gorgeous and when the hour is more reasonable I will take and post pixxx.

I'm a consumer that refuses to purchase shoes made in places I don't agree with entirely. As a result, I must await when a pair of something I will wear, in my size, shows up at a secondary source (such a thrift store) so that I do not have to place my buck where my morals do not agree. So, I sit, and wait. (I know, call me a hippy or whatever, but deciding where I place my buck is one of the few powers you can have)

I applaud your patience for that, then. Chucks are typically those shoes that get worn until they die and then get thrown away. I just got a new pair to replace my old ones that are basically falling apart on the inside. It's kind of sad, because the old ones were from before Converse was bought out and they lasted for a really long time and actually fit properly. :(

You do realize that you're still supporting the product that you don't agree with by wearing them, even second-hand. People see chucks, they want to buy chucks. Where do they buy some chucks? Why, converse, of course.

What I'm trying to say is that you should make yourself a pair of fucking rad faux-leather mocasins+ 1righteousness

While I don't agree with sweatshop labor, it's a hell of a lot better than those people not ever having any money at all.

Oohhhh, hippie paradox.

it's not about how much money they are paid, it's about the conditions they work in (at least for me).  you can make excuses for why sweatshop workers are paid so little, but there is no good excuse for the abuses they suffer.

You have an avatar with a pony with a dick for a horn,

I'm seriously bewildered as to why you grouped that as a bad thing.

I had a friend last year who wore home-made moccasins all the time. He was into native pride or whatever, though. He's in jail now.

No, those are cute.

Ugly:

Slightly weird:

Way too much color:

I have nothing against brightly colored shoes, but when it looks like your box of crayons threw up on your feet, you have a problem. (I think Sam may have a pair of shoes like this, but he is an exception, because Sam is a classy dude.)

See, I like the colors on the last one. It's just the shape and style of the shoe that's ugly to me.

Also I see that you have sig-quoted me and that makes me ridiculously happy! This is the first time it's happened.

While I don't agree with sweatshop labor, it's a hell of a lot better than those people not ever having any money at all.

Oohhhh, hippie paradox.

While I'm not going to get into the issue here, I would just like to point out that this is a very complex issue, one that is fascinating to look into (not to mention, essential if you do wish to go around talking about it.) And from the information that I know so far, it is far better for me to not support sweatshops with my few dollars.

To whoever said I was supporting them by simply wearing them- that's a completely different issue. I own shoes, shirts, and pants that are originally from places that I'd never give money too. But they fit and they were at my local thrift store, and so I wear them. If other people look at these clothes and decide they wish to buy them as a result, I simply hope they are informed. My intention is not to change other people, but to make conscious decisions myself. I can't escape from wearing anything associated with a brand of some sort that I do not make myself, so it is inevitable. I hope that makes sense.

Also, I LOVE brightly colored shoes. I had a crush on a guy because he had bright green shoes once.

See, I like the colors on the last one. It's just the shape and style of the shoe that's ugly to me.

The colors themselves don't bother me (except on the first pair), it's just how the colors are used and the shape of the shoes are just not very pleasing. I like bright colors, but usually they look best in small doses (meaning one or two bright colors is better than 5+).

I remember in elementary school the thing was to have super bright neon colored winter coats. I loved mine and have missed it ever since.

I'm still waiting for those coats to come back.

My problem with sneakers is that they do nothing to show off your feet. They hide them instead.

On the "Chucks/sweatshops" issue, well, you could always just sidestep the whole damn dillema and get yourself some No Sweat Sneakers. Sweatshop-free, Made in union workshops, and most importantly actually much better made and don't fucking fall apart after six months wear.

Idunno, I've had mine since mid-July and they've gone through some pretty hardcore abuse (hiking through mountains, getting played with by dogs, having music equipment dropped on them [fucking ow]) and they're still perfectly intact.

I have a friend who still wears his dad's Chucks from the '70s. They are pretty badass-looking.

Yeah, this has not been my experience - the No Sweat ones started coming apart after six months, while the Nike ones stayed together for nearly a year. Then again, I probably played with the holes on the No Sweat ones a bit more, so... To be honest, if I have the choice, I'd pay the extra money for two pairs of No Sweats that last six months each rather than one pair of Nikes that last a year - No Sweats are actually slightly cheaper in my neck of the woods. And they come in pink size tens.

I have a pair of Converse from before they were sold to Nike and now two pairs from after. The first pair held up with only tiny holes near my small toe and have stayed this way for the past 5 years. The older pair from post-Nike are the same, but in slightly better shape as they are only 4 years old and I wore the other pair a lot more originally. (The last pair is brand new, so who knows what'll happen to them.) But then again, one of my friends got a pair of post-Nike Chucks around the time I got my second pair and hers lasted less than a year, when the whole inside of one shoe decided to separate from the sole. She got another pair later on and they didn't do that, but did get sizable holes where the cloth met the sole. But she has wider feet than I do and chucks are pretty narrow shoes.

(Photobucket is being a jerk, or I'd post the new ones.)

I wish! Those things are like 40-some bucks. I remember getting so excited about finding a completely vegan-American made shoe site only to realize it was upwards of 50+ dollars.

Ok I realise it's been a while but I finally stumbled across what that skirt reminded me of way back on page 3.

(It's an actual antique from 1904. I realise it's not actually bustled, like this, or bubbled or whatever, but it's close enough.)

Wow, that's a very slim line for a victorian dress. You dont see many of those. I think I prefer the bustled look actually.

No need to quote the post right above yours.

Also it isn't Victorian, it's Edwardian. The Victorian era really ended about 10 years before Queen Victoria's reign in 1901; silhouettes changed pretty dramatically after that.

Mid-Victorian
Late-Victorian
In between, the Princess of Wales was the head of fashion or whatever because Queen Victoria was still in mourning and people were sick of it.
Edwardian started the crazy S-bend corset thing.
Everyone started chilling out around 1907 or so. Silhouettes were slimming down toward the 20s by 1913, too.

Well, this past fall was supposed to be a resurgence of 60s mod, but I didn't see that much except in the colours (there was this horrible teal), and it didn't last through to spring. It would be nice if this lasted longer, but I doubt it.

Besides, there are those of us that tend to favour that era outside of when it presents itself in Vogue, so whatever.

Heh, I'm just glad that there is more of it avalible. I rarely dress fashionably, I just appreciate it when fashion coexists with what I naturally enjoy. I do classic looks so much better than anything else.
