Q.C. Forum, raise your voices!
« on: 06 Feb 2008, 20:26 »

As per this thread:

http://forums.questionablecontent.net/index.php/topic,8627.0.html

It's been too long since we had a thread like this (though I think maybe it got revived a little while ago? I dunno). Personally I find it much more interesting to hear what people sound like, than to see what they look like. So say something to us, sing us a song, whatever - let us hear you!

I was just thinking of starting a thread like this, but I figured people wouldn't like the idea. So hooray for you!

I will find something to record and post again, methinks.

HULLO!

Maybe you have heard this before, but I am posting it again. It was my big hit in the 80's! Pardon the noise, it was hot and we had to have a lot of fans on in the studio that day.

Dude I have a recording of me playing Between the Bars and was considering posting that. Oh well!

Maybe I'll come up with something later. I am tiny but I have kind of a weird voice, maybe. The lowest note I can hit is the D below middle C?

So I am working on updating old recordings of my voice (songs and stuff), but I want to do something new for this. Two somethings, specifically, and at least one of them will be a song. All songs will be done a capella! I will work out some sort of accompaniment if I can. Somebody pick one! Choices are:

  • Canción del Mariachi (Los Lobos)
  • The Islander (Nightwish)
  • a jazzy rendition of Everything Your Heart Desires (Darryl Hall and John Oates)
  • Papa Can You Hear Me? (Barbara Streisand and Nina Simone)

Readings will probably be monologues from Shakespeare, unless I can think of something better.

Objections?

Do Nightwish.

Also your reading should be a Shakespeare sonnet.

Huh.

(Maybe I will sing for you one time when I am drunkish. I am not a good singer.)

(Also whenever I watch that video I wince when I realise that I have a lisp.)

To be fair mate, you have a pretty cool voice.  It's incredibly North American.

Anyway, here is another recording. It's a story about Charlie, written by Noel Fielding of The Mighty Boosh.

Here you go: http://www.box.net/shared/nyzod2ko44

EDIT: This particular recording is dedicated to Rizzo.

If you ever wanted a poignant tale of tentacle rape with David Shifrin's Mozart Clarinet Concerto in the background, boy are you in luck.

Edited for MP3 format.  This is all about equal opportunity aural harrasment.

If you have Audacity you create a karaoke track out of any a lot of songs. I could maybe make one for you if you want?

Also you have a lovely singing voice! I am jealous.

When I get to a place where it's not weird for me to sit with my face right next to the speakers on my laptop (internal mic doesn't pick things up well), I am in! But to sing or to read, that is the question.

This is probably a good time to say "HEY ROO. I TOLD YOU SO."

Is it a bad thing that I kindof want to do another recording of me talking, but this time letting what remains of my Georgia accent show up? I'm debating. I may have an answer later tonight.

Do it. I'm planning on doing a standard "This is what I talk like, letting my vague bit of New England twang in" and one for how I tend to speak when doing recordings (For the purposes of what I sounded like on my college radio station).

Okay, I have done some recordings for you all. Here they be. And I know I recommended box.net, but it's being kind of a bitch right now so I used Mediafire instead. Whatever.

1) My normal speaking voice here.

2) My "special occasion" speaking voice here.

3) Singing voice here! If you are expecting something good you may be a bit disappointed.

Misconception, I like your "special occasion" speaking voice, but I actually think I prefer your normal speaking voice--it's perhaps a little less... mellifluous?  But it's got more character.

Here is my contribution. A couple of years ago, I wrote a very short song.  It happened to be at about the time when I started playing around with Audacity, so I recorded it in three parts: (1) a three-track section of the song with voice, harmony, and whistling; (2) 6 or 7 sped up, overlapping tracks of me reading from Machiavellli's "The Prince," somehow altered so as to sound nothing like decipherable human speech; (3) another voice / whistling section.

It would be slightly less embarassing if I had wasted less time on it.

Slick you sounded nothing like I thought you would, your voice is so...timid. Like, now in the shower picture your expression looks vaguely apologetic to me. "Oh, um, hullo, sorry about this, I thought it would be terribly funny but now I'm not so sure..."

Edit: Okay, I just finished downloading Audacity. What's this about being able to make any song karaoke? Because I've got some Alice in Chains and Derik and the Dominos that I want to sing along to.

Mmkay so I lied with that post, I discovered a fair number of songs this morning that Audacity can't karaoke-ify. But some work, so here is a tutorial video so you can try it. Sometimes it just kinda muffles the voice, but that can help if you are fine with just singing over the original vocals.

I liked it. I just chose not to post because your giant ego is suffocating me. You should be modest, like Jon/Obsessions.

I would like to attempt to hi-jack this thread for selfish purposes. I want to program my computer and my iPod to feed me routine instructions throughout the day. Unfortunately, the voices on my computer are kinda lame and robotic sounding.

I want you guys to record yourselves giving me various helpful instructions to be played at various times during the day. Instructions such as 'Darryl, wake up and get out of bed!' 'Darryl, don't forget to eat breakfast', 'Darryl, stop being to lazy!' 'Darryl, it's time to start cooking dinner', 'Darryl, it's getting late, you should think about going to bed', 'Darryl, never give up!'. Use your imagination, what sort of instructions do you think I need to hear routinely?

Will any of you do this for me? I'd very much appreciate it.

I was about to record something for you, until I looked over and realized both of the USB ports on the front of my computer are already taken. Sorry Darryl, I don't feel like making any effort in order to plug in my microphone right now.
