In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
« on: 09 Feb 2008, 19:25 »

So, today is the 10th anniversary of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, and I realised that for what a hugely influential album it seems to be there are hardly any artists that I know of that take a lot of influence from NMH. The only artist I know of is Viking Moses, which doesn't even sound a whole lot like NMH.

So, would anyone be able to recommend some NMH-like artists?
Also discuss the amazing greatness that is In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and Neutral Milk Hotel in general!

Khar is just loathe to admit that he likes this album apparently.

Anyhow, you really should check out Beirut.  Especially the first album.  Zach Condon, the main man behind Beirut, had a member are two of Jeff Mangum's backing musicians from Neutral Milk Hotel record on the first album with him.

And since you like Beirut, you should also check A Hack and a Hacksaw, plus Jeremy Barnes of NMH is in it.

It'd be a good idea for you to check out Snake's Got A Leg and Sunset Rubdown by Sunset Rubdown, anything after that is too far away from NMH to warrant mention. Also, Frog Eyes might be worth your time and if your after more spooky sounds try bands like Wolf Eyes.

The trick to singing like Jeff Magnum is to sound like you're shouting even when you're not.

Ok, I worded it pretty terribly. What I meant was, so many critics say it's one of the most influential albums of the 90's, and lots of artists cite it and NMH as an influence, but what I was saying is that it doesn't really translate into the music.

As I've been shown in this thread though is that I overlooked a lot of artists for some reason. I mean how the hell did i not draw the comparisons with Frog Eyes?

Influence doesn't necessarily have to translate directly into the music. Quite apart from the fact that you can be influenced lyrically, loads of bands sound nothing like their influences. Can you hear The Cure in blink-182, or Deftones? Can you hear Missy Elliott in Eels? Can you hear Ice Cube in Weezer? There may be elements of it somewhere, but you'd never trace it directly.

I'm having a hard time visualizing that imagery.

Also, even though Zach Condon's voice is amazing and operatic, his lyrics aren't nearly as grand as Mangum's.

You may not have noticed because it's pretty damn hard to tell what Condon is saying.

The only song I don't really like off of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is "King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 2."  Nothing against Christians or Catholics, but I just cannot take him wailing "IIIII LOOOOOOVE YOOOOOU, JEEEEESUUSSSS CHRIIIIIST!"  over and over again.  It really gets on nerves.  On the other hand, "Holland, 1945" is a lovely song.

Are you implying Jeff Mangum is a Christian?  I thought everyone knew he was singing that lyric ironically or whatever.  He's gone on record as saying he's not Christian.

Anyway, I love that part.  And once the song starts rocking, boy, is it awesome.

The King of Carrot Flowers pts. 2 & 3 was always my least favorite track on ITAOTS. I like it right up to when he starts singing. The lyrics and singing just aren't up to par when he gets to, "And then I'll find myself AGAAAAAAIN! AGAI-AI-AI-AIN! OH-OH!"

I actually like the track up to that though.

Quote from: Jeff Mangum
I love you, Jesus christ. Jesus Christ, I love you.

I can't understand why anybody who would otherwise enjoy the song would find this lyric irritating. Do a lot of people have a problem with musicians using the phrase 'Jesus christ' in their songs?
It must be hard being Jeff Mangum. There's a lot of pressure on him to out perform this album if or when he decides to start writing and recording music again. No matter what he would do, people would say it wasn't as good as Aeroplane, even if it was better.

Bonus points to the man for not putting out the same schlock album over and over like most other 90s indie 'heroes' that kept on trucking.

I never said I didn't enjoy the song.  I just said it's not my favorite on that album.  I really have nothing against that phrase in itself.  Hell, I use "Jesus Christ," or just "Jesus" as an exclamatory nearly every day.  It's just he repeats it ad nauseam, or at least to a point where it starts to bother me.

lolwut.  All the 90s indie heroes did the same thing.  Slint, My Bloody Valentine, GY!BE, Olivia Tremor Control, June of 44, Rex... doing your best work and suddenly calling it quits was what the 90s were all about*!

*Yes, I know GY!BE didn't quit until the 00's, but still.

He's still recording, writing, and playing music. He went to this Bulgarian folk festival and recorded a 30 minute compilation. I mean, it's not NMH, but it's output, and it's definitely not sticking to some tried and true formula.
