Hearts of Oak is vastly inferior to the Balgeary ep thing.

Also yeah Khar we know you don't care about anything but metal :B

this is not quite true! He also likes this:

which, to be fair, is a great deal more fun than most Ted Leo

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Ok, I'll concede that there are some good songs on StS. Me and Mia, Angels' Share, and I think I remember enjoying Better Dead than Lead. But a good portion of the middle of the album is absolutely forgettable. Hearts of Oak is a lot more consistent- and how could you possibly argue with Where Have All The Rude Boys Gone? The High Party? Hearts Of Oak? Ballad of the Motherfucking Sin Eater? Of the only time that I saw Ted live, he ended with that number and it was absolutely goddamn phenomenal.

Plus, some of the lyrics on Shake the Sheets are fucking terrible. "I want to sweep the Halls of Arrogance, sweep the walls of the excrement of these baboons."? Shit! Ted wrote a bunch of better lyrics than that, and they're on the two albums before Shake the Sheets.

Just 'cause the title track is shit doesn't mean the rest of the album is.

I knew what this would be. Do I now recognise the youtube URL off by heart, or are you just tediously predictable? MAYBE BOTH!

I also like this and this and this and this and this and this and many other things! I guess I just do not like boring generic 'rock' music!

Well, to each their own, my main gripe with StS was the overall lower quality of lyricism. Whenever Ted wrote about anything political, I always preferred it when he wrote about it more subtly. The High Party? Awesome. Title track off of STS? Bad. The latter was the most extreme example I could find on that album.

Maybe one of these days I'll give Shake the Sheets a proper, objective listen, but it's not high on my priorities right now.

Guys, Khar won't admit it, but he loves the Spice Girls. Like more than any other group ever.

We should all probably just talk to him about the Spice Girls from now on.

I recommend that those bands sound almost nothing like NMH and furthermore that two of them kind of suck.

Ah, and why would you want a band that sounds like Neutral Milk Hotel when you already have NMH to listen to? Wouldn't you rather hear some suggestions of other bands that are somewhat similar in style/genre?

Let's recap:

Me: I don't think Animal Collective, Deerhoof, or Of Montreal sound much if anything like Neutral Milk Hotel in the least.

You: I didn't say they sounded like NMH.

Me: So why did you recommend them?

You: Because they sound like NMH.

Deerhoof =/= NMH.
Both good bands, but nevertheless, they sound nothing alike. Other than mildly irritating vocals.

Jeff Magnum's voice kind of has to grow on you.  You learn to love it.  It's really dynamic and he can hold notes for quite a while.

I was the other way round. I listened to the album once kinda half paying attention and it seemed pretty ok. Then I gave it the time of day and dear god, angry hornets assaulting my eardrums with chainsaws! Oh no wait, that's a guy. And he's... s... he's sin... he's singing? Well I'll take your word for it sir.

Not entirely, but Holland, 1945 was.
Several other songs are too actually, as are a number of the lyrics throughout. That song is only the most obvious example. Jeff Mangum himself said The Diary of Anne Frank was a direct influence on much of the album.
