Persona 3: FES
« on: 10 Feb 2008, 10:10 »

I just recently finished Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3. What I originally thought was that it would be a simple time-waster and wouldn't capture me nearly as much as it did. I have heard that the expansion disk, FES, is due out in North America some time. This would make me insanely happy. Does anyone have any further news on this, and also, what are YOUR thoughts on the game?

I haven't played the actual game before, but I hear enough about it from one of my friends that the expansion is supposed to come out some time this year. This is all I know.

Hopefully the expansion will mean a reprint of the original game, because that thing is fucking impossible to find anymore. New copies on Amazon or eBay will set you back 80 bucks at least. It's a shame, because I really do want to play it.

They should come packaged together like they did in Japan.

I want this badly. I am a huge fan of the Persona series and eat it up as often as I can.

It isn't just an expansion. There is a whole other game called Episode Aigis included, which is basically a sequel.

If these two are really packaged together, then I am putting down money as soon as it's announced for North America. Don't want to be left out in the cold this time. I'll have to drag my PS2 back out, but whatever.

It is! I am preordering it as soon as an Amazon page goes up for it, and thanking both Atlus and my lucky stars that they are selling it with the original game and for 50 dollars less than a sealed copy cost on eBay. I'm really happy I get to play this without paying a ridiculous sum.

Sorry, man, you're screwed.

Quote from: A friend of mine
My coworker CJ went into a Gamestop today to pick up two copies of Frontlines that he'd pre-ordered (not sure why; everyone in the studio's getting a copy for each platform).

He pre-ordered quite some time ago, and paid in full when he placed the orders.

At Gamestop this morning, he presented his slips and asked for his games.

Manager: "Do you have anything for trade-in?"
CJ: "No, I don't want to trade anything in. I'm just picking up my pre-orders."
Manager: "Then I can't sell them to you."

:stare:

Wow. Just wow. He called corporate, who said there was nothing they could do.

That's probably not a national policy, by the way.  Still, fuck Gamestop.

I have also preordered it. Really excited, there was an excellent LP of this game that I read, so I know the story already, but it doesn't diminish my excitement to both play it myself and to experience the new stuff.

The guy went back and the night manager handed over the games no problem, said that the asshole who'd done it was "on the way out".

I started playing the original game, of course, since I couldn't find the original version. Some of the bosses in this game are fucking hard. It took me a long time to beat the Natural Dancer on Floor 110 because it kept using all those fucking charm spells.

So I finished The Journey for the second time last night and started on The Answer. It is pretty hard! I have figured out a method of getting to the bosses without blowing all of my SP, though. You run through a couple times for the goodies and the levels, then run through while avoiding enemies and escaping.

I am on the last area of the Answer, running through with Junpei because Mitsuru is absolutely useless for the first boss, as I found when I fought it for the first time to determine a strategy and it absolutely wrecked my shit.

This has been the best $30 I've ever spent. I've already gotten 77 hours out of The Journey and I'm still addicted. I plan to go straight to The Answer as soon as I finish the main game. Absolutely amazing. Persona 4 can't come fast enough!

Alright, now somebody here other than Cory and I has played this game! If anybody is reading this and hasn't tried it, I am being absolutely sincere when I say this is my favorite JRPG since Chrono Trigger. It's 30 bucks brand new, if you have a PS2 you should really check it out.

And I am dittoing the excitement for Persona 4. It is literally one of the games I'm most excited about for the rest of this year, and I can't believe Atlus is bringing it out in the US at the end of 2008 for only 40 dollars. They serve a niche audience, but you can tell they're really all about their fans.

I really wish they'd reveal the English voice cast for the next game, though. I thought Persona 3's dub was excellent so I'm hoping this one will be as well.

I saw this a week ago when I picked up Shadow Hearts 3, and was about to get it since I LOVED Persona 2, but decided to hold off until I read up on it.

I think I'll pick it up tomorrow (later today, I mean).  It will join the stack of Games Jackie Hasn't Finished, which currently includes, let's see, GTA4, FF4 DS, FFTA2, God of War, FF12, Shadow Hearts 3, and the original Siren (I finished most of it when it first came out but now that I've finished Siren: Blood Curse I really wanted to go back and experience it again because damn, I love it as much as Silent Hill 2).

Yeah, Europeans get kinda screwed on most video game related things. Not quite as badly as the Australians, but game makers definitely cater first and foremost to the Japanese and American markets.

In other news, the fan translation of Persona 2: Innocent Sin is coming out next month, if you're interested in tracking down a Japanese rom and patching it in to play a nearly decade-old PS1 game.

...I might be.

Innocent Sin is, yes. There are technically two Persona 2 games, and we got the second one, which had the subtitle Eternal Punishment. I think he's actually a boss, not just an NPC. It's sort of assumed that that is one of the reasons that game never made it to the US, along with a heavily implied gay relationship between two of the characters, which was kind of a big deal back in 1999.

Sorry to necro the thread, but I finally got around to getting this and I need some help (and let's face it, GameFAQs is a lot less helpful than it used to be if you just need "general advice"...)

I'm normally very good at JRPGs, but I'm getting a bit mucked up by having two separate games apparently happening at once - a sort of "dating/relationship sim" and a "randomly generated dungeon you have to keep entering game".

My biggest questions are, is there ever any point at all to being a jerk to anyone?  I mean, why do I have the option of treating my friends like crap if all it does is make the game harder?  Why do I have to be nice to EVERYONE or cripple myself?

And what about all these Pokemon Personas?  Do I need to level up ALL of them that I get, because that seems like a tremendous pain in the ass.  I only have 6 right now and the thought of leveling them all up seems boring as fuck.  Do I need to level up the ones I'm just going to Fuse later?

Someone told me not to Fuse Orpheus until late in the game because I can't get another one until then.  True?

Being a dick doesn't really accomplish anything except make the links take longer to level up, so it's not a good idea. This actually feeds into your second question: the vast majority of the time, you shouldn't bother actually leveling up Personas through actual fighting. Persona leveling is intentionally slow, which is why the bonus EXP you get from the social stuff is so important. In short: fuse a Persona, let it get the levels from the social link EXP, use it for as long as it's useful/until you can make something better, then fuse it. I think your problem is that you just need to be fusing things a lot more. Just experiment, the game should show you what comes out of the fusion and what skills they inherit before you actually start the fusion.

And yes, Orpheus doesn't come up in the little card drawing minigame that gets you more Personas, so you shouldn't fuse it until the Persona Compendium is available (which I think happens about a month and a half after the game starts), which lets you resummon old Personas you don't have anymore for a cash fee. The reason for this is that the Fusion skill of Orpheus and another low level Persona, Apsaras, is extremely useful for a large portion of the beginning of the game. It's got a high SP cost, but it's a full party heal and a full party accuracy/evasion buff. It'll be really important against some of the early bosses. Orpheus is a pretty shitty Persona aside from that, frankly.

Also another good reason to keep Orpheus long enough for him to be in your compendium is that you can fuse him and a high-level Persona called Thanatos. This gets you a really powerful/useful persona called Messiah.

Well, that happens at the very end of the game, long after you can summon him out of the Compendium for dirt cheap. Furthermore, Messiah's a 90th-level Persona, and leveling that high by the end of the game means you pretty much have to go to Monad, the optional dungeon, which means the final boss will basically be no challenge at all anyway.

One thing that's really great about Persona 3 is that it really doesn't require you to grind at all. In fact, since experience is calculated on a curve and the sections of Tartarus that are open to you is restricted by the calendar date, you could argue the game actively discourages you from grinding.
