Guys I might just be weird but has anyone else ever made a salad out of just toppings? Like, cherry tomatoes and shredded carrots and broccoli bits and some bacon bits and cheese and olives and croutons and salad dressing? Because seriously I am eating one right now and it is so good. Like I make them a lot (I like all the toppings, just not the lettuce), but this one is a honey-mustard dressing with black olives and some cheddar and some kind of garlic cheese and baby carrots I managed to snap in half and snooty Parmesan Croutons and it might be the best one I've ever had.

salads are pretty great. I like pretty much all kinds, from an overloaded caesar salad with tons of toppings and veggies to just bag lettuce with dressing on it. I like basically all dressings except ranch, although my favorite is probably just oil & vinegar. My host family when I studied in spain served really great salads at least once daily,  exclusively with oil & vinegar as dressing. Since coming back to the states I can no longer eat ranch dressing on salads, it's just way too rich. Also, Newman's Own creamy caesar is probably the best pre-made dressing I've had.

The absolute best* salad dressing is a simple oil and vinegar mix (olive and balsamic, of course).

The one where you take some leaves and bits of onion and carrot and tomato and cucumber and such and then pour foul oily shit over it all and then eat them. Then sometimes people who are truly in league with utter evil add particularly vomit-inducing things like coleslaw or salad cream or something.

Same here. I already went on the record about my dislike of mayonaise on the Good Eats thread. I think I was ripping on Paula Dean and the freakish amounts of the stuff she uses at the time.

Oddly though, I don't mind a good hollandaise sauce, although it does have a considerably richer flavor even if they are related sauces.

I like mayo in small amounts, but copious amounts of it are disgusting. Most places really glob it on whatever you order, so I usually have to tell them to go easy on the stuff. Subway's the worst. Even when I tell them to put less on my sub they add a shitload, so I generally just leave it off.

While plain mayonnaise is certainly disgusting, there are certain limited uses of it which are definitely worthwhile.  Also, a well made aioli (which IS a word, Firefox, whether you put a red line under it or not) is a fantastic thing.

Mayonnaise straight-up is nasty, and in most situations is nasty. Turned into ranch dressing it's delicious.

Ranch dressing is the proverbial gold nugget in mayonnaise's giant pile of shit.

Mayo = yuck.

Ranch = yum.

Also bread sauce does sound pretty good. Basically it seems like a more liquid form of stuffing, with the bread crumbs and such involved.

All this talk of bread sauce is reminding me of my latest lunchtime obsession: hearty soups in bread bowls. I don't know if they've always had 'em and I just never noticed, or if it's a new thing lately, but I've been finding that all of the sandwich places around where I work have soups in bread bowls. My favorite thus far is the cream of chicken from Panera; although I don't like their sandwiches, their soup is delicious.

Panera has some good breadbowls. Their broccoli cheese is awesome.

Though I don't hate mayo based things, like ranch dressing, mayo all by itself is nasty. Seriously. Egg whites, oil, and lemon juice/vinegar to bleach it out? Ew. And it looks nasty, especially when people put on too much and it oozes from their sandwich. Gross.

Personally my favorite dressing on salads is Italian. I'm really picky about what kinds, because I like them to have flavor and not just taste like oil and vinegar.

What kinds have you had?

Every kind people ever have on their salads?  Italian, Ranch, Russian, Thousand Island, Greek, all sorts of light dressings, balsamic vinegrette, you name it.  None of it is appealing to me, but it's okay because I actually enjoy the taste of vegetables.

As for mayonnaise, the only thing I'll put it on is tuna fish, and even at that, I prefer sunflower oil.

I'm with you, Linds.  I like spiced Italian dressing, too.  But when I was living in Italy, the absolute only salad dressing I saw was oil and vinegar, sans other condiments.  I don't know if it's really a misnomer, or if Southern Italians are more creative with their salad fixings than the people I was living with.  Needless to say, it's put me off the just-oil-and-vinegar type of Italian dressing for at least a couple of years.
