Kotaku has a positively riveting demo preview. The mechanic upgrades sound like they're slight enough to retain the one-man gang feel of the rest of the series while making a significant number of tweaks that enhance the core gameplay rather than completely change it.

I'm increasingly excited about this game.

Goddammit. I just posted in the length thread about GTA4 before noticing this I hate you.

Here's a bunch of info on GTA4 I stole from another board. I'm not going to vouch for its accuracy, but I still assume it to be anyway:

Nicked from somewhere else, all the stuff known so far from interviews and press demos:

- The location will be Liberty City, a completely retooled and more realistic version of Liberty than what we've seen in the past (GTA1, GTA3, LCS, GTA advance).

- There will be five buroughs: Dukes (Queens), Bohan (the Bronx), Algonquin (Manhattan), Broker (Brooklyn), and Alderney (New Jersey). It has been confirmed you start the game out in Broker. No, Staten Island will not be present because R* feels the area is boring.

- The game will be much harder than past entries. The days where you walk up to any car and jack it are over, as are the days where you simply have to run to a pay and spray to get the heat off of you.

- While the game is not as big as San Andreas, it has more detail and R* is going for less wasted space.

- The police system has been entirely retooled. You will not instantly become wanted whenever you commit a crime now, even in public. If there are no cops around, and someone sees you, they will have to notify the police. It sounds extremely similar to The Warriors, it sounds like. When and if you commit a crime in public and the police are notified, a circular search area will appear on your radar. The fuzz will go on high alert. If you are outside of this area the cops will not be able to find you unless you commit another crime. If you are spotted in the circular area, the police will follow you to that location. Thus, if you are sneaky, they will not know where you are.

- You can trick police to get rid of wanted level. Since there's no Pay and Spray you must use other ways to get rid of wanted level: changing your clothes (especially if they are bloody); switching cars to confuse the police; running into someone's house, out the back, and on to their fire escape, among other things.

- Many interiors are fully decorated and have been given a much bigger emphasis and importance.

- While the game does not have planes, it does have helicopters.

- Some cars are locked, so you will need to strategize escape routes more thoroughly this time. In order to unlock locked vehicles, breaking the window is necessary, as is hot wiring the car. Obviously, under a chase this will make things more hectic.

- Targeting system has been retooled. It has a Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War like targeting system, which is perfect for GTA, to be honest.

- Niko has a cell phone, which is essentially the start screen. With the cell phone, you can call any number that's in the game, including mission leads, and various characters so you can learn more about them.

- Car trunks are now usable. Supposedly you can put bodies and weapons into car trunks.

- Missions are far more dynamic now and have a different structure. Many missions start at specific times now, similarly to Shenmue. If a train leaves at 10:00 am and you arrive at 10:01 am, you fail the mission. Missions also happen on specific days. If it's Monday, sometimes you will have a mission that starts on Wednesday. You can obviously do other missions in between or come up with a plan. Rockstar wants to blur the difference between story missions and non story based missions. I do not know what this means.

- Missions have been completely retooled. Now, you do not have a giant arrow over someone's head if they are your target. Let's say you have to kill a target, but he's surrounded by a group of people. You do not know who is who. You can handle this in multiple ways. You can find out his phone number, call him up, see if he responds, and kill him; or you can simply go up to the entire group and kill all of them. The choice is up to you. Of course, if you do the latter choice, your boss may be pissed off...

- Depending on how well and what you do during missions, you can form relationships with your bosses and clients. If you do good, kill your targets discreetly, you will have a good relationship. If you do things in plain sight, without using your brains, your boss will most likely hate you and break all contact. It sounds like a great evolution on GTA2's fun, but not exactly deep, respect system.

- Maintaining character relationships can result in specific rewards. Little Jacob is the guy who sells you weapons. Your relationship is maintained through phone contact and loyalty. If you boost up his relationship, perhaps he gives you better weapons?

- Trip skip feature from Vice City and Vice City Stories is back, thankfully. Now you can even use cabs to drive you pretty much anywhere you want apparently.

- You do not get weapons Ammunation any more. Ammunation will most likely not be in the new game.

- As the third trailer hinted, before you gain any sort of weapon, you're going to be using your fists. More emphasis on hand to hand combat will be in GTAIV.

- Beware night time in certain Burroughs, as you may get jumped by random gangsters and the freaks of Liberty. You can get robbed.

- There is now a GPS. Saints Row ftw.

- People will react to your weapons. So if you have an rpg out, they will obviously go batshit, which will cause attention to you.

- You can push people off of buildings.

- As the third trailer showed, there is now an emphasis on cover. Kill.Switch and Gears influence obviously.

- Girlfriends are returning. No word on whether R* will make them funner than last time they appeared.

- The internet is a feature in the game. How this will affect gameplay is unknown but Rockstar promises it will be crucial to the gameplay.

- The game will NOT, THANK GOD, place emphasis on territory or gaining territory.

- The days where you carry millions of cash on you are over. You can now use atms or go to the bank to deposit or withdraw funds. Sounds pretty similar to Dragon Quest. Maybe when you die or get busted, you lose half of your funds or something. Can't imagine what will happen when you get robbed.

- It seems getting busted may have bigger consequences than simply losing your money and a lil cash this time. Many people think this means you may end up going to jail every time you get busted, but that's just mindless speculation at this point. Honestly, that wouldn't be very fun.

- You can now shoot different body parts and your victim will react realistically depending where he has been hit.

- Rockstar will use the Euphoria Engine, known from "Star Wars: The Force unleashed". Result: Every Explosion looks different.

- Enemies that have been hit may still try to get up again and attack you.

- Pedestrians have a memory. They remember your face when they saw you doing a criminal act and run away in terror whenever they see you again.

- The multiplayer will be activated via the cell phone. Nothing is known about the multiplayer modes except that there will be up to 16 players possible.

- Francis International Airport is back but resembles JFK Airport

-Niko's cell phone has a Built-In Radio

-2 Minutes real time is now equal to 1 Hour In-Game time. Thus, longer, more fleshed out days.

-Seasons are NOT in the game

-Every cop car has a working computer, which allows you to search for any criminal in the city, find his where abouts, and any thing remotely related to him or her. Should be handy if you need information on a target.

-You can call the police via 911 AT ANY TIME. Maybe you can use this feature to your advantage somehow...

Wow, that's really looking like it's going to be an impressive game. If that's all accurate then I love every one of those changes.

if these changes are all actually true, then this might be the first GTA game that I care about. These changes sound like they addressed my main problems with the series in terms of gameplay.

Oh and with this new, more serious direction they're going maybe they'll be doing away with the painful crude humour throughout everything in the game. You cannot imagine how thankful I would be for this.

Holy shit, a serious GTA? I mean, I was planning on getting the game just because of Russian accents, but if all of this is true I'm going to cream all over my wishlist for sandbox games. Thank FUCKING God for making cars harder to break into. I've wanted this since GTAIII. I'm a little disappointed there'll be no planes this time, but they better make up for it in the vehicle department. I loved flying : (

I don't think every one of these changes is a good one. Most of them are, but I'll try and select the few I'm wary of.

- The game will be much (emphasis mine -JC) harder than past entries. The days where you walk up to any car and jack it are over, as are the days where you simply have to run to a pay and spray to get the heat off of you.

- Missions are far more dynamic now and have a different structure. Many missions start at specific times now, similarly to Shenmue. If a train leaves at 10:00 am and you arrive at 10:01 am, you fail the mission.

- Beware night time in certain Burroughs, as you may get jumped by random gangsters and the freaks of Liberty. You can get robbed.

- It seems getting busted may have bigger consequences than simply losing your money and a lil cash this time.

None of those are bad ideas by themselves but frankly they seem like they might not go hand-in-hand so well, except to frustrate the shit out of the player. Look at that second one. I can see that being a major headache. Also, why should being robbed be included? Aren't you the crook?

The thing is, with additions like these, you generally have to tweak the difficulty level back a bit so that it's not immensely irritating to play. If the game is harder, requires you to be precise and inserts a genuinely punitive measure such as the severing of contact with bosses, well, that's not a great combination. This is especially true of a game where one move can sometimes mean the difference between a successful mission and a miserable failure.

Oddly, I was really excited after that Kotaku post, but now I'm kind of hoping some of the items on that list are speculation.

Your fears are definitely valid, but I think I trust the direction these speculative changes are heading in: there's a huge difference between being just plain-ass hard, and realistic.

For instance, if you're playing Serious Sam and are tasked with killing 300 bad-guys, that's do-able.
On the other hand, if you're playing Splinter Cell and have to kill a dozen guys in daylight, things get tricky.

So I don't think the GTA series is going to get any more balls-out difficult. We might have to take a few extra seconds to get a getaway vehicle in working order, but so too might the cops be hindered in some way (least of which being the new detection system). In the end, the GTA series has been plagued by infuriatingly difficult portions of its games, and I'm expecting that, but in a more serious way.

Also, I can see getting mugged working out to as much of a minigame as hookers have been in the other games: somehow I doubt, if truly implemented, being robbed will be as monumental a part of the game as we may be led to believe.

My dream game is a realistic sandbox game.  Although, with this new format, the days of putting the disk in the tray just to run around on a murderous rampage and kill hundreds (or even thousands) of NPC pedestrians may be coming to an end.  Perhaps not.  The location-specific damage system make make things more interesting.

Sigged for pure awesomeness.

I like what I'm seeing in the demos.  Difficulty was never a problem for me in games; the frustration is the fun part sometimes.

Yeah, I know what you mean.  The first time I shot the boss instead of his lacky in Fallout, I learned how much it sucks to have the boss hacked off at you...  Luckily in Fallout you could save like crazy... However from what I understand GTAIV won't have very many save points.

I'm torn on this. For me, at least, one of the things that made GTA so fun to play was that it was not in any way realistic. The series has never been about being gritty, serious and compelling; it's always just been about pure fun. And I worry that this could completely wreck that entire premise.

I really don't want this to turn into something resembling The Getaway, even if it is a billion times better than that game.

QFT.

I don't feel that it would still be a GTA game if it wasn't about driving as fast as possible down the road and trying to wipe out nearby pedestrians. Don't get me wrong, it could still be awesome, but GTA is about the pleasure of jumping cars as far as possible and running down the street throwing Molotov cocktails left, right, and center.

The pleasure of GTA is jumping on the hood of someone's car and watching them sit there and do nothing while you stomp until the engine bursts into flames.

I really disagree. I always found that the violence was just this painful thing you had to do to get further in the story. I had more fun deliberately not killing people. The combat system and the ai was just too simple for it to actually be fun. I'm really liking hearing that the series is maturing a bit. One game can't really cater for everyone and the company really as to go somewhere with the series so it doesn't stagnate. I'm really enjoying being on the side they seem to be aiming toward for once.

[edit] actually there is one point that I do not like. Girlfriends were bad and I don't want them again if they have a gameplay element at all.

Multiplayer details just announced, and they're big:

    * There are 15 multiplayer game modes in GTA IV. PSM had an opportunity to play 7 of them. The rules of each game are determined by the host.
    * Multiplayer supports up to 16 players.
    * Your online character is fully customizable. You can alter his race, sex, hair, clothing etc.
    * The game modes featured are as follows:
      Multiplayer Preview
      Multiplayer Preview
PSM Spain has all the first details on GTA IV's multiplayer system.
         1. Hangman's NOOSE
         2. Car Jack City
         3. Bomb da Base
         4. Bomb da Base II
         5. Mafia Work
         6. Team Mafia Work
         7. Deathmatch
         8. Team Deathmatch
         9. Turf War
        10. Cops n Crooks
        11. Race
        12. GTA Race
        13. Deal Breaker
        14. Free Mode
        15. (some other mode?)
    * In Race and GTA Race, the host gets to decide which vehicles are involved, and the number of laps to be played. You can shoot and throw molotovs from the window, and even steal your rivals' car.
    * In Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch, the host gets to decide whether the police can intervene or not. The host also gets to decide the number of pedestrians, the amount of traffic, and the type of weapons.
    * In Cops n Crooks, one team play as cops and the other play as criminals. The cops must stop the criminals from escaping. They can monitor the locations of the criminals on their GPS systems, while the criminals have no idea where the cops are.
    * In Mafia Work and Team Mafia Work, you play as one of Kenny Petrovic's mafia henchmen. You must complete hits ordered by the boss (via the cellphone) before your rivals are able to do so.
    * A single-player mission called "Hangman's NOOSE" features co-op. You and your friends will be able to escort a mobster, while being pursused by a SWAT team.
    * The map used in multiplayer is the same map that is used for single player.

So let's get this straight. 16 multiplayer game modes, 16 players max, and the best part? It all takes place in the single gigantic world that singleplayer takes place in. Woohoo!

bump because three weeks from today, GTA IV is going to be blowing us all away.
also, i reserved my copy yesterday and i am hell of excited.

the only downside is that now that i have my copy reserved, i have a deadline for the other games i've been putting off. i now have three weeks to finish Lost Odyssey, Culdcept Saga, and "Bring Down The Sky" for Mass Effect. none of these tasks are very daunting by themselves but the fact that there are three of them, and i don't want to do any of them because i can't stop playing CoD4 makes it kind of intimidating/annoying.

Yeah, I know what you mean.  Especially because of the new maps.  And homework.  I've got another half-hour or so in Brawl, and 2/3rds of Crysis and a lot of Morrowind left.  In addition, Mario Kart is coming out soon after, and Too Human, and I need to play more Civ 4.

I'm debating whether or not to go to the midnight launch...I've gotta leave the house by 10 the day after, so I wouldn't be able to pick it up until the 1st unless I go...on the other hand, I'm not going to have anytime to play it after I get it until at least that weekend anyways...decisions, decisions.  Anyways, for those of you who haven't checked the gamertag thread, mine's is the same as what you see on the left.

Fuck, man.  I will knife fight someone on top of the bridge, and then get trashed with them under the skirt of the Statue of Happiness.

I'm thinking remaking the freeway chase from the Matrix Reloaded.

Or just going on a killing spree.

Or follow the leader.

Or sniper wars.

Or create a type of zombie game.

Skyscraper King of the Hill?  Or basically a 16-man clusterfuck around a tall landmark of your choice.

Apparently we will be able to ascend to the top of the Empire State Building, so I'm assuming there will be various skyscrapers to party on. I'm curious how the melee combat system has worked out: if there's the ability to grapple, we might have some very interesting wrestling matches on top of the tall structure of my choice. Loser is roadkill!

I seriously hope we can carry booze around or something.  I totally want to have a party on top of tall things and then accidentally mistake the edge for a firepole.

Man, why the fuck did this and Mario Kart Wii have to come out 2 days apart.

I better fucking have the money for both or I'm a gonna be so very broke and eating Ramen.

Quite possibly with a very angry woman in the house.

There are gameplay videos popping up all over the 'net, but I'm forcing myself not to look at them. I will abstain from the Internets for the next week.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

The video review was underwhelming compared to their text review. I'm looking forward to Bellic.

I saw a batfight on the streets.  And several completely unique explosions.  That's good enough for me.

There's a achievement for the 360 version that requires you to beat a Rockstar developer in multiplayer.

I wouldn't be surprised if the devs have to put in mandatory multiplayer time for the next few weeks, heh.

Gears of War had a similar Achievement, which was viral in nature. It's been theorized that the same applies to GTA IV, and that the conditions necessary will spread in a kill-chain outwards from a Rockstar developer.
