It'll be interesting to see how they pull off the Battle Room, which is supposedly the main part of the game.

The last Orson Scott Card-related video game didn't pan out so well, though.

I never played it, but I was referring to commercially. It was a horrendous bomb in terms of sales, and the major factor along with Psychonauts in leading Majesco to giving up on traditional games and becoming almost exclusively a casual games publisher.

So any idea what style of game this is going to end up? I haven't read the book but I've got images of Homeworld swimming in my head.

They said specifically that it will be primarily focused on the Battle Room, so I seriously doubt that. I could see them doing a Persona 3 style thing though, where the combat stuff and the social stuff are separated into distinct parts of the game.

Understandable! After giving it some consideration I've decided to lock the thread in the books sub-forum and keep this one open, as it seems to me that the point of the discussion is the game rather than the book.

Does this mean that Wolfgang Peterson's movie adaptation is going to be coming out any time soon? I would not be looking froward to that.

Wait, Wolfgang Peterson was tapped to direct?  I'm not sure if I'm cool with that or not.  Seriously, this guy gave us Enemy Mine and Poseidon.  Thankfully Card is still writing the screen play

Thankfully Card is still writing the screenplay?  Have you read his stuff in the past seven years or so?  He has gone so far downhill so fast it is mind-boggling.

I liked the first book of the Ender's Shadow series.  I got really annoyed and tuned out when it became a thinly-veiled post-9/11 allegory.  I didn't sign up for the series expecting Tom Clancy style "political thriller" and extended segments dealing with frozen embryos.

That said, I did enjoy Magic Street.  Also Enchantment and Treasure Box were great, though I think they were written pre-9/11 (ie before his brain broke).

Though, to be fair, some bits of his brain were broken as far back as 1990, as evidenced by this little gem:

"Laws against homosexual behavior should remain on the books, not to be indiscriminately enforced against anyone who happens to be caught violating them, but to be used when necessary to send a clear message that those who flagrantly violate society's regulation of sexual behavior cannot be permitted to remain as acceptable, equal citizens within that society."

Reading that makes me feel a little dirty for loving his early novels so much.

Maybe I was too old when I first read it or something but I found Ender's Game to be really trite and dull. Basically the M. Night Shyamalan movie of the book world.

Also dude's a homophobe. Fuck him.

Ender's Game is one of his least interesting books, to be honest.  He wrote many other things which were magnitudes more interesting, such as The Worthing Saga and Songmaster.

His homophobia is an odd thing.  Consistently, his novels contain homosexual characters who are portrayed sympathetically, even heroically in a couple of cases.  It's also worth noting that, while he claims to be a devout Mormon, much of his work is very agnostic.

I think he's a conflicted individual whose personal beliefs often clash with the church he was raised in, and it sometimes makes for fascinating novels.

I also liked Magic Street, I just thought it was a little strange when he included the lines about the protagonist's turds being dry so he didn't have to wipe.

i'm so glad i found all this out now instead of back when i was obsessed with card.  it would have destroyed my adulthood rather than simply destroying my childhood.

that being said, despite its format, i am excited about the game.  it would be cool if you could play online as individuals, form teams, and have battle school tournements...  and maybe the social aspect of the game would be much more freeform.

at least it has a better chance of happening than the firefly MMO...

and please, they've been talking about an ender movie for YEARS and YEARS.  it's not going to happen.  i think a serenity sequel is more likely than an ender movie... wow... two firefly references in one post... yikes...

You should try talking to the guy some time.  He's incredibly smart.  I sat outside the classroom he taught in one semester just about every time he had class because I had an hour before my next scheduled one.  I would have been IN the class if it wasn't for the halfhour I was still in another room when that one started, but oh well.

Having met him and talked to him and been invited to his house, I respect him a great deal and think he's a great person.  I think folk are too quick to jump down his or any other author's throat for comments taken the wrong way.

I loved the book, and am hoping that the game turns out good. But if turns out well, how the hell would they make sequels, Speaker for the Dead doesn't really translate well to gameplay, and Xenocide while better suited for a game, doesn't make as much sense without SftD.

Xenocide would make a good game?  How?  Put it on the DS or Wii and have it consist almost entirely of counting lines on a floor by clicking on them?

I really can't see how this will work out too well. If they really wanted t make an Ender's saga game, I think they should have had it centered around Ender's Shadow.

A Tycoon/Civ/etc style game based around Peter's rise to power could be amazing.

logically, depending on what the developers want, I'm guessing three or four parts:
-A social aspect (presumably like Bully; I've never played it).  if you play as Ender, this would include getting your army to accept you.
-the psycho-analysis game from the computers- with the giant and the two glasses.  I have NO IDEA how it would be controlled, or how it could possibly be smart enough to not feel contrived, but wow... seriously, it would be amazing.
-the lazer game.  duh.
-the ship combat game from when Ender was on Eros.  Honestly, in this part, the less graphics the better.

judging by how different these parts are, I seriously doubt they would be one game.  It'd be nice though.

I really hope this is good otherwise I'll be dissapointed to no end.

I don't really care about his personal life, the Ender's Game series is one of my favorite.

Regarding a video game... It better be good to live up to the success of the novel.

I'm not sure how exciting a game would be...it would be the same mini game, over and over and over...

Then again, counter strike is pretty popular.
