Objection!
« on: 19 Jan 2007, 03:50 »

As some you may have guessed, this thread is about the Phoenix Wright series.

Basically, the Phoenix Wright series was originally a trilogy of Japanese GBA games that was remade for the DS and released in North America and Europe during the process. Imagine Law and Order as an actually good video game with crazy anime characters and great, funny dialogue. Since adventure games are more or less dead at this point, you're gonna have trouble finding a better one around right now.

As a relatively late adopter of the DS (I bought the DS Lite on launch day but I never owned the original), I didn't manage to find the original game in stores even though I was interested in picking it up. Shortly after Christmas, I was surprised to find copies of the game in stock while surfing Amazon. I ordered it and have spent most of the past two weeks playing it a bunch. It's a great game, and even though the sequel that was released stateside yesterday isn't quite as good, I still ordered it online just to show my support for the series, because apparently Capcom's avoiding committing themselves to a translation of the third Japanese Phoenix Wright game until they see sales numbers for Justice For All. Just like my reasoning behind buying Elite Beat Agents (which I've previously ranted about in this forum), the best way to convince publishers to release more crazy offbeat Japanese games in other regions rather than an even larger stream of stupid Halo and GTA clones is to buy the games they actually do take a flyer on.

So yeah. If you like the games, talk about them! If you don't, but you own a DS and like adventure games or just weird games in general, please buy the new game, and/or the original if you can find it.

Phoenix Wright is a ridiculously fun game. It is good enough to inspire this shirt.

Man, 22 dollars is kind of a lot for a T-shirt, but I want that.

Also, the Genji one is equally amazing.

man. and here i had just convinced myself to save teh $200 i set aside for a DS lite and put it towards a 360.

decisions!

If there were any stores that had DS lites in stock for anything like the MSRP of $129, I'd have one right now.

They're overcharging you for DS Lites in stores?

Man, I've never heard of that happening over here. You should check online.

Yeah man. I live in Canada and I only had to pay $150 of our Canadian play money for it. That's surprising. Plus it hinders you from playing Phoenix Wright.

Haven't played the 2nd one yet, but the first one was ridiculously fun. Every time i play it though, it makes me sad that the old school Adventure genre is dead. :(

Well, maybe not dead, twitching perhaps.

I have to say it's true over here as well (Pennsylvania, US), with the overcharging and all. The MSRP is $129.99, but since the holiday rush they all went out of stock, which I guess means the few they get in are able candidates for price raising. Yes, I don't have a DS, and WHO ARE "YOU??! I would like to get one, but I'm waiting for those assholes to lower the price!
Don't say to check on amazon or ebay either. They're going for so much more than 130.

I used one of those in another thread.

I decided that I couldn't wait for the shipment from Best Buy to show up, so I found it in a Target today and bought it. When the one from Best Buy shows up I'll return it for 3/5ths of Rogue Galaxy or maybe half of Lost Planet. I'm at the beginning of the second case now after playing it for 4 hours or so and it's just as engaging as the first. The humor and over-the-top style are definitely intact.

Yeah. DS Lites have been out of stock since before Christmas, when Nintendo was selling them for USD99 on Black Friday.

I think Gadzooks or the Limited Too is selling only the pink ones for like, USD160. You can also get the Japanese version for 200 online.

That's completely insane. I guess all I can suggest is to wait a couple weeks and it'll probably go back to normal.

I will say that i didnt come up with it...unless you wish to praise it then of course it was my doing!

Also if you want a laugh (as i suspect you will) then look at the Phoenix Wrong 'videos' on youtube, they are brilliant!

Well, I just finished the game about 5 minutes ago.

That might not sound like it lasted me a long time, but I played it a lot during the past week. I'm not sure if it's as good as the first, but the last case and the ending are absolutely awesome. Seriously, it is really good. I really hope Capcom brings the third one over here so I don't miss whatever happens in that one. I know we're getting the first actual DS game (still in development currently) for sure, but still.

One of the reasons I got a DS was for this game. I got my DS on January 29, 2007, so I'm very new to all of this. A friend of mine put in an order at Gamestop.com on the 22nd to surprise me. They gave me the order number and I checked the status of it, and it shipped that Friday. I guess I was extremely lucky, because it has been on Back Order for weeks, and still is.

Anyway, I love this game. I was trying to hold off it until I finished Trauma Center, but I couldn't wait. The cases get you very involved. You have to pay very close attention to details. It really is a great game. I have both games, too. The second is waiting for me to finish the first.

I got my DS a week or so ago and the game is awesome. I should get the first one, too.

Black DS found at a Target in Evanston.

You really should. Some of the subplots in the second one make much more sense if you played the first.

Just got the game today, it made a bad day infinitely better. I just finished the first case - not especially difficult, but extremely satisfying. TAKE THAT!

It looks like Capcom has been convinced the series has a big enough American fanbase.

*BUMP*

Trials and Tribulations is out! Go buy it!

I already bought a second copy because I'm too impatient for the one I ordered online to show up on Monday. Which is exactly what I did with Justice for All. Shit.

Johnny, you're getting another present in Toronto.

Also, Capcom has confirmed that Apollo Justice Ace Attorney (aka Ace Attorney 4) is coming to the US after all! Whooooo!

Apparently nobody besides me cares about these games at all!

However, Capcom recently announced that Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is coming out in the first quarter of 2008! I'm gonna miss the old cast, but if the localization is as excellent as it has been so far in the series I'm sure I'll get over it.

No no, I love these games too (well, the first one at least; I haven't played the others yet) but I am too broke to get excited about anything right now. I fully intend to buy and play through every single one but it is nowhere near within my means right now. I keep seeing japanese imports of these in this one games store I window shop through every now and then and I get all excited and sad because there are all these games I need to play but can't afford.

I am bumping this thread again to let everyone know that Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is being released on Tuesday (February 19th) in North America! All of you American and Canadian Ace Attorney fans should go buy it, and the Europeans who don't want to wait another two months (release date in the EU is currently April 11th) might want to consider importing!

There's also a flash-based demo of the very beginning of the game on the official website that introduces you to some of the characters. You're defending Phoenix, who seems much... calmer now that he's not defending people accused of murder, and Winston Payne's new haircut must be seen to be believed.

I just finished Apollo Justice last night. It was great, but a little bit shorter and easier than the Phoenix Wright games. I'm also a little sad they took out the ability to present profiles as they did in 2 and 3, because that was a great way to get extra info and goofy jokes. Also a little sad that there weren't more cameos from the first three games, but hopefully they can put that in to the next one. I want to see what happened to Edgeworth and Maya and everybody, and the game sort of left you hanging there.

I've played the first three, but the new Apallo Justice is a bit of leap from a really winning formula.
That being said, I can't wait to try it and see if it's as good or better than the first three!

I am not really sure if I like these games.  You are basically led to the solution for most of the game, then you'll have to make a small leap of faith every so often.  You also have to sit through pages and pages of shitty dialogue.

Shitty? I always found most of the dialog to be hilarious. Many laugh-out-loud moments. Then again, I tell people that a pencil (just a pencil) can entertain me for 10 minutes.
