It's not Harvard the school exactly, as it is the Harvard formatting standards. You've heard of MLA, ASA, APA maybe? Different professions use different ways of referencing and citing your sources.

No one said anything about typos, as everyone has a typo here or there. I think the majority of posts are about why they think obvious spelling, grammar and basic sentence structure mistakes are disrespectful to the discussion, and to the other posters. They're pretty obvious now with the inbuilt spell-check and everything, so it's definitely not hard. Though I have gotten spelling-slapped by Katie once for spelling "definately". Oops!

Basically, you can be silly while still being comprehensible! Most people here do it pretty well, I think.

An avatar is a little picture or animation you use to represent yourself.
That picture is old and has been used a few times here before. I don't think it is something you made.
I guess this just means we have differing values on how we presents ourselves.
I feel painfully avant-garde with my imperceptible pink square.

Slick, has anybody actually noticed that you have an avatar before it is pointed out to them? It took me almost a minute it to see it, even after you pointed it out.

I don't know if it's a great avatar, for the reasons Slick mentioned, but it's certainly a great animated gif.  As for this being a particularly grammar conscious forum, I've never noticed it, but that's probably because I spent a pretty long time actively posting on the Jeopardy! forum...

Incidentally, I just caught up on Strong Bad emails yesterday!

Guys why has this thread devolved into another grammar-nazi penis fencing contest? Or, rather, why is it starting to go that way, I guess, because it's not nearly as bad as some of the ones in the past. It's barely relevant!

Also if Jeph ever mods me no one will have to worry about improper grammar or spelling on these boards ever again!

Well, actually I would leave Khar's posts as-is. For posterity.

Ah, for me the difference between MLA and Harvard is pretty much the difference between passing and failing an assessment (the APA is very picky about their standards). And as for the difference between "its" and "it's" I direct you to the Strong Bad Emails. There is one in there that has a pretty good neumonic for remembering it.

"Ohhh if it's a possessive it's just I T S but if-it's-meant-to-be-a-contraction-then-it's-I T APOSTRAPHE S!"

Works like a charm.

You forgot the "scalawag".

JEPH'S FORUM REPORT CARD:

I used to at least read everything in Comic and General Discussion but now I actively hide from those boards because they freak me out too much. I'm glad they're there, otherwise people would just say the same stuff somewhere where I don't have mod privileges, but I can't read them. F- THE INSTRUCTOR IS AFRAID OF THE CLASS

Music Discussion is awesome, I am genuinely kind of proud to have spawned a place where people talk about music in such a fashion. A++ WOULD READ AND POST IN DAILY

I really have never looked in Arts & Crafts. It could be Nazi guro porn for all I know. C IS FOR KNITTING AND THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME

Comics & Drawings would be good if people posted there more, but whatever. D YES EVERYBODY LIKES CALVIN AND HOBBES, PERRY BIBLE FELLOWSHIP, AND ACHEWOOD

Movies and TV shows etc. gets a C because I don't think I have posted in there more than once. The only show I really get excited about (ie, boners) is How It's Made, anyway.

The video game board was great when I was addicted, crack-like, to Mass Effect. Also I wouldn't know about Zero Punctuation if not for that forum. B+, would be an A except for the perennial Mac vs. PC threads.

HURR is pretty good and has its moments of awesome. B, could be higher but I don't have time to keep up with everything and current events/blog threads bore me to tears.

Hi I'm New gets a C for fulfilling a thankless task in an adequate manner.

The hidden Mods/Admins forum gets an A- for excellent but infrequent content. HINT: WE ALL MAKE FUN OF YOU BEHIND YOUR BACK

OVERALL: With just a little more effort, the QC boards might just qualify for that scholarship. Also I am putting ads up in here sometime soon because of all the bandwidth you guys eat.

The only show I really get excited about (ie, boners) is How It's Made, anyway.

Man, the narrator for that show is the most boring dude ever. I feel like I'm in 3rd grade when I watch that show, watching some crappy film about how they vulcanize tires on some antique projector from the 50s they they got with a government grant to inform children in the 50s how they vulcanize tires and also you're gonna die of radiation.

Give me Mike Rowe any day. That dude is all man and humor. He is sculpted out of the purest form of testosterone. He is like an old school demi-god of a man. I would like to arm wrestle him. And then when my hand hits the table, as it of course would because you cannot possible compete with that level of man, he would look into my eyes and suddenly jump across the table, pushing me to the floor, his rough, stubbly chin brushing against mine as he forced me into a passionate kiss. His arms, so strong picking me up and turning me over as his rips my pants off. His hands, rough and calloused grabbing me as he rams his gigantic dick(it is like, 14 inches at least) into my wanting ass. And I would cry from the pain and joy of such an act.

Such a beautiful act.

I'm kinda surprised ads didn't go up sooner. Quite a few of us are shit terrible about linking to gigantic images rather than posting or resizing them.

The thing I like about the show is its randomness. "Today on 'How It's Made': Ice Skates, Sitars, Mobile Homes and Moist Towelettes."

Yes, changing the height/width of an image in html does not change the file size.  Also, It looks fucking terrible and should never be done.

I am fairly sure that Whipstitch actually meant resizing the image in photoshop or some other program, since that would actually reduce use of bandwidth.

Yeah, I did mean in photoshop etc... Funny thing though; most of the few images I've posted that have been resized were actually only resized via the forum's capabilities because I do a lot of my posts at the library in extremely short blocks of time and hate spamming, which is also why I'm generally more likely to link to large images than actually post them. Seriously, responding to a picture with a picture is the devil.
