We don't need new people
We just need Kieffer back

Tommy needs people to sleep with, dawg. I do not think Kieffer would be down with that, see, because Tommy is not hot enough for Kieffer.

I've basically written a thesis on this very subject over the last two years.

Unfortunately it is scattered across six forums with no linear chronology.

Also it is liberally peppered with dick jokes.

My old professor did ethnographies on webforums, specifically Indymedia. It was pretty dang interesting to hear how the internet has helped spur social activism! Only I think Indymedia is a web site with a forum. or something.

I didn't read the rules. I thought it should be pretty obvious what goes where and that being new means you should be polite until you get into the swing of things if you never lurked. (I lurked for a while before posting.) But maybe I am/was used to forums like the ones I was on before joining this one which were made up of meat life friends and were friendly anyways. Edit: However this was just me personally. The rules in the Hi, I'm New forum in the topic started by Jeph are pretty important. The other two were made by the people who were officially designated for a time to greet new posters, but really are less relevant. Yes, it's nice if a person follows all the rules, but really, as long as you follow the guidelines that matter, I don't see what the big deal is.

Basically, if people don't act stupid and have good spelling/grammar, it shouldn't be hard to get involved here when older posters aren't being dicks.

i've been boarding since the 90's  (which typing this aloud makes me feel ultra dorky), and I've never understood why the spelling/grammar thing is such a big deal. it's in no way a representation of someone's intelligence. i know a bunch of a super geniuses who can't spell/conjugate to save their lives. it would be silly for me to think less of them b/c of it. on boards though it seems as if people think that stanford-binet scores should be determined by a ninth grade spelling bee.

Graham?

Sarcasm is a sign of insecurity, tommy.

i hope for my shrink's sake that this isn't true :(

Poor spelling may not be a sign of stupidity, but at this point, so many browsers have a spell check function that it IS a sign of laziness.  Like Anyways points out, on a more personal level, it strikes me as being somewhat disrespectful.  If you don't care enough about what you're saying to make sure that it's said correctly, why should anyone else care enough about it to make sure it's read correctly?

Or maybe I'm just an English major grammar nazi.  Regardless, I like all the good spelling and grammar on this board.

I'm not a huge fan of nitpicking since it's often more pedantic than helpful, but I'm also a firm believer that coherence is a virtue. In my short time here I've never seen a newbie get flamed to death over a dangling participle anyway, so I'm pretty comfortable saying that whatever unspoken standards we have in place are reasonable.

Dude, anything looks good if you compare it to 4chan.

Also, I find myself agreeing with Elizzybeth. It's not hard to to use inbuilt spellcheckers, or to use basic grammar (periods, commas, capital letters) - not doing it just makes it look like you don't care, or that you're just plain old lazy.

I like leading by example when it comes to spelling, capitalization, etc. because I refuse to read anything that is so shoddily written that it's almost incomprehensible because of all the glaring errors everywhere. I just assume that it's the same way with other people.

Also, guys, I know it's real cute and popular to antagonize 4chan and talk about how terrible and stupid it is, but seriously? You just show your ignorance to the fact that not every thread is stupidity feeding off of stupidity. Note also that even 4chan has standards regarding internet shorthand.

I don't think anyone is taking proper grammar as a sign of intelligence, or bad grammar a sign of the opposite. It's more on a level where it's annoying because it sends off a message that states "I couldn't be arsed to type this post up properly, it's not worth my time" or similar. It might be considered a childish approach, but I consider it as much a respect thing as anything else. I really could care less about it if you don't actually know how to convey what you're trying to say, but "2" for "to"/"too"? "cuz" or "b/c" for "because"? Come on. I haven't seen a lot of it on these boards, but the tendency is definitely growing.

Given your long habit of posting, I guess you've probably realized a lot of fora have rules, both written and unwritten - you try to follow these, at least until you know when it's accepted not to. Know the rules before you break them, and all that. Doing your best grammatically without using a dictionary is the norm here (and has been for a while).* Following this rule is a polite thing to do, and we all just want to get along, don't we? Why should we not type properly?

*Well, that's how it's always appeared to me - people tend to have pretty good grammar in here, at any rate.

edit for spelling, ironically.

Yeah, I have noticed a more "mature" approach to the writing styles here than on almost any other board I know. It's almost to the point that I want to make a poll about what age everyone here is because almost no one types like a 12 yr. old girl from Peoria, which, on the internet, makes me feel as if i'm in the presence of a bunch of middle-aged economics professors.

Where it's much more likely that you are surrounded by uni students, top-end high school students (some are younger), young profressionals and some older people who actually learnt spelling and grammar at school. They don't seem to teach it anymore as far as I can see...

They teach it, but nobody pays attention. And after a few years, they get down to the stuff that really doesn't make a difference, as far as I can tell. Things like the different formats (MLA vs... forget the name), the proper use of semicolons (I am with Vonnegut when it comes to semicolons), and they still never teach you how to remember the difference between its and it's.

Ah, for me the difference between MLA and Harvard is pretty much the difference between passing and failing an assessment (the APA is very picky about their standards). And as for the difference between "its" and "it's" I direct you to the Strong Bad Emails. There is one in there that has a pretty good neumonic for remembering it.

"Ohhh if it's a possessive it's just I T S but if-it's-meant-to-be-a-contraction-then-it's-I T APOSTRAPHE S!"

Works like a charm.

It's not that hard to use proper punctuation, grammar and spelling. If they can't spell or conjugate to save their lives, then with no disrespect intended, it's quite a stretch to call them "geniuses."

I wouldn't say that it automatically makes one think less of the person, but it certainly makes me not have any interest in reading their post except for comedic purposes.

The plural for genius is genii but this genius is the masculine equivalent of juno, (pl. junones). We now use this Latin word to describe great intellectual prowess. Incidentally,
these jinni also granted those under their tutelage intellectual prowess.

I honestly don't need mnemonics to remember simple things like that but what's MLA and Harvard?

Judging by the names, doesn't like I'll need to know it.

They're formatting standards for academic writings.

Judging by his writing in that last post, he's right. He'll never need to know that.

I agree, let's bring it back to "Post at least halfway intelligently". For reference, the above post is a good example of what not to do.

I can't help it, Spaceman, I'm genuinely curious as to how it happened.

Then again, I'm hardly the poster-child for intelligent posts. But I'm working at it. It's just hard to get silly out of my personality.
