...It took you an hour to read those? Or was it just 'cause you were stoned?

Anyway, hilarious. I used to love Garfield when I was little, and then I realized that I could read better comics online that weren't the same jokes used over and over and over again...
PLUS, Jon has a girlfriend now. WTF is up with that?

You'd have to take out both Garfield and the girlfriend to extract any entertainment value out of those.

EDIT: I made a couple of my own.  They turned out pretty well, I think.

EDIT: Two more.  I like to think that in the last one, Jon's madness has finally driven him into sociopathy.

Probably right up there with the Nietzsche Family Circus in terms of entertainment value.

There is also a garfield randomizer floating round the internet somewhere. Three random panels. Comedy gold.

However, what about trying this with QC? What happens if we remove Marten?

I have a new level of respect for Garfield.

I wish Jim Davis would take a look at threads like this and realize simple ways he could make his comic infinitely better.

After seeing some comics both ways, I have to say it’s a mixed bag. Sometimes it works better with Garfield removed completely, sometimes it works better with just his bubbles removed. And sometimes both methods work, producing very different results. F.ex., I find that these two are both hilarious, but for extremely different reasons:

It's almost scary how well this works.

Sometimes they work even better if Jon doesn't say anything, either.

None of the "tricks" you can apply to Garfield (such as removing Garfield, or silencing him, or randomizing the panel) will make the strip funny per se. Honestly, it's an inane (but insanely funny) exercise.

That one with Jon running into the door is a great example of why this works. I looked up the original, and Garfield's line in it was "But don't you think running into the door every day will offset the benefits of the exercise?" Seriously.

Having Garfield say that, or even be in the strip at all, isn't necessary to the joke. His only purpose is to awkwardly overexplain what's already being shown, so taking him out actually makes the humor the strip was trying for stronger.

I used to read garfield as a kid, I have the whole colection in my basement. I somehow used to find it funny. Even then I noticed Jim Davis ended up losing it through the years. A mauled mailman is only funny the first few times.

The mauled mailman is a sinus-curve of entertainment: Funny the first ten times, not funny the next ten, then funny for another ten times, not funny for the next ten and so on and so on...

...

Also, I think someone should do a "Randomly cross-dressing invisible Garfield"-Comic.

Perhaps not, but they'd still be pretty damn funny.

I wonder if Davis ever has this sort of thing in mind when he develops these comics.

That said, since most people can get offended easily by what's put in the comics section (to wit: Calvin and Hobbes got yanked on multiple occasions, but it's brilliant) it doesn't pay for a daily comic kind of guy to get too edgy in what he actually prints.

Also, has anyone seen the Simon's Cat videos on Youtube?

I can't laugh enough at this comic! Thanks for sending the link for Garfield Minus Garfield, because I have already e-mailed the site onto a few friends as well as some co-workers that I know are going to be in stitches over how well the theory of John Arbuckle's schizophrenia plays out. Hopefully my neighbors won't start thinking I am schizophrenic while I sit here reading through more of Garfield laughing out loud in a rather small apartment building.

Cheers.

So wait...Jim Davis doesn't do anything anymore?  That's pretty sad, and yet he still slaps his name on this creature that he likes to call Garfield.

Has someone tried removing all of Garfield's audio from the movie? Would that make it any better or would it stil lbe terrible?

Realfield is pretty awesome.  Honestly, it's how I imagine most pet owners that happen to be single.

The one where he finds the quarter out of what you just posted is a very realistic scenario.  I've said stupid things like that to my dogs multiple times, just because they're there and something to talk at, even if they don't understand.

Personally I find this new psychopathic John easier to relate to and a lot more humorous. I doubt Jim Davis even cares anymore about his cash cat so sending him suggestions will be about as useful as throwing a written letter out the window.

Doesn't it seem like Garfield is becoming less and less necessary to the strip? All of these came form the last month or so.

EDIT: I just realized the Garfield Minus Garfield site already did some of these. These aren't their pics, though. Just a coincidence.

I can't believe so few people have realized that taking out Garfield or his thought bubbles doesn't necessarily heighten the humor by making Jon schizophrenic and pathetic, it's just taking out Garfield's unfunny internal dialogue with himself. The strips already have Jon talking to a pet that doesn't talk back to him, Jon has always been schizophrenic and pathetic.

Of course Jon has always been schizophrenic. Removing Garfield (either just his thoughts or entirely) cuts the reader off from that perspective, making Jon's mental issues, rather than a sarcastic cat, the prominent aspect of the comic.

Aside from that, editing comics is fun when there's nothing else to do. :D
