Damn that was a spoiler for manga/BH which I haven't read/seen yet. Oh well, time to drink it away.

Certainly puts an interesting spin on the Mustang/Bradley showdown in FMA Anime 1.0, what with the skull in the bag and all. I know they're separate, but still.

Forgot my headphones while in a college (also happens to be public) library for a day, so I couldn't watch any more, but I discovered their collection of volumes and ended up inhaling volumes 9-12.

I still don't like the Xingese.

Big Lots in the USA sometimes sells this anime for really cheap.

The series is very good, but watch out, the first episode is extremely slow.

I wish people were generally less knowledgeable around here so I could get away with recommending really terrible anime.

Hurr durr Ninja Scroll.

As far as less stupid anime goes, though, has anybody ever seen My Dear Marie? It's a pretty light but very entertaining little romantic OVA. Definitely one of my favorites, very rewatchable.

I was thinking more along the lines of Dragonaut. Saw a bit of it at a con. I guess the big selling point is that it had the same character designer as the guy who did the anime adaptations for Witchblade. Yeah.

Hahahahahahahaha Witchblade!

Witchblade (comic and anime) used to appeal to me for the same reasons Ninja Scroll did: tits and gore. Then I turned 14. Although I must admit Witchblade/Dragonaut and the like are on a whole different plane of suck than Ninja Scroll.

Yeah, see, I'm careful about criticizing Ninja Scroll and Wicked City because they are very competently something I have no real interest in. They're simple minded, but they're ultimately about visceral reactions. It doesn't really interest me but I must admit that the character designs and animation are pretty damn effective and they don't really pull any punches. Do I prefer more restraint? Yeah, I guess so, but the imagery certainly gets the idea of what they're trying to accomplish across loud and clear.

Dragonaut is just kind of a big dumb and surprisingly high budget anime. It's built around fan service while managing to be completely unsexy. Even if you were looking for something that fills the boobs and action template I would have to think you could do better. Definitely worse than Ninja Scroll.

I dunno if I'll catch flak for saying this, being a guy and all...but I thoroughly enjoyed Azumanga Daioh.  First learned of it through the newspost for this QC comic and out of curiosity decided to check it out.  I have to admit that I'm not really a fan of anime or manga (bad first exposure to it when I was younger (though I am more open to it now), and no it wasn't with hentai you pervs), but I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this one.  It was humorous, touching, weird and sad in its own way.

You don't deserve any flack for that at all. The reason you liked Azumanga Daioh is that Azumanga Daioh is awesome.

hey, a question

usually I'd want to watch anime in japanese with english subtitles, but I'd heard that Neil Gaiman wrote the dub for Princess Mononoke, so I assume it's pretty good.  which do you think would be a better choice?

(keeping in mind that, at least for the first viewing, I'm going to be downloading it, and I assume I won't have a choice to switch between the two)

Try them both. It doesn't matter which one is first. I've seen both versions, and they're both good.

The dubs for the Ghibli movies are usually handled pretty well, I can't think of one which was particularly bad; although some of them weren't to my liking. On the whole subs or dubs thing, it's the shonen shows that cop the most flak for good reason and the reputation of dubs as a whole  gets dragged down because of it.

I don't know. In some cases, I'll agree, a good dub can be acceptable or even improve on a few characters. But they don't ever (in my experience) really quite fit, somehow, even if the timing is right on. I'd say even in some cases that the very idea of the dialogue being in English seems wrong to me. Maybe it's the content of the dialogue (which is sometimes tailored specifically to either Japanese culture or even to the language itself) or just my blind prejudice. I'm sure there's a debate on orientalism here somewhere.

I find that the amount I feel like a dub fits correlates directly to just how "Japanese" the show feels (Ghibli movies excepted, the dubs on those are always top notch). A show like Evangelion or Azumanga doesn't sound right with English voices, whereas in my opinion shows like Cowboy Bebop, which have obvious heavy American influences, tend to sound better in English.

Of course, a lot of it can also have to do with how you first watched the show. If you are used to the characters sounding a certain way, chances are if you hear them in another language it will sound wrong.

It pretty much boils down to how it was animated for me.  A lot of anime is simply animated so the Japanese language fits the way the characters' mouths move.  Try watching Akira with a dub if you need a good example.

Clearly the highlight of that dub was Crispin Freeman.

man, I just watched some absurd shit called Dead Leaves and while it made no sense and bordered on annoying about 60% of the time, it had some of the freshest and slickest animation and art style I've ever seen. It's a movie, but it's only an hour.

I think I might buy it off Amazon just to confirm that I saw what I actually saw, because I'm still in disbelief.
