Personally I prefer a good mead, either a traditional or metheglin, occasionally a sack. Sack is generally a little too sticky and heavy for my tastes though.

Other than that, I like to go for micros or home brews. Gives you a better variation, and we have some killer breweries here in the Pacific Northwest, such as Port Townsend. They have a killer stout and a pretty good winter ale. I sure do miss Muggers brewing company out of southern Idaho though. Had some great ales and you could order just about anything by the growler.

And of course there a quite a few out of Portland that make some decent micros.

I have seen it mentioned and would just like to reinforce that, yes, any light beer is a travesty. Some things just should not be done.

Pale ales are really under-appreciated, I find. Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale is probably one of the best ales you can get across the country.

hell yeah keith's.

stella artois is okay too.
recently i tried this korean beer that i currently can't remember the name of, and it was surprisingly good.

Was it OB?

Man, I get a kick out of the fact that a baseball team in Korea is named after a brand of beer.

ADDITION: aw, apparently the team has changed owners:

Is there such a thing as even semi-decent Mexican beer? I've had Corona, and like two different types of Dos Equis, and they're TERRIBLE.

I like Negra Modelo if I'm going to have a Mexican beer. It's not the best beer ever, but it is far from the worst.

the beer i had down in guatemala was pretty good actually. Gallo and Cabro were the best. makes all mexican beer weak piss by comparison.
i actually got to visit their main brewery, guided tour and all with beer and chips at the end. that was majorly cool.

up here in BC, kokanee isnt too bad. for a cheap domestic its pretty good. so far my favourite readily available stuff is stella artois and sleeman's honey brown.
good stuff.

most surprising, is how cheap beer is in alberta! i got a seriously good tasting local beer there for 6$ a sixpack! cheaper than pop!

Negra Modelo tasted to me like corona with molasses added at some stage. Not at all a bad beer, but it's not the top of any list.

Oo! I spend an inordinate amount of time reading fantasy books with a preference for "hero fantasy" and celtic-based societies (eg: David Gemmell is a great example of this) so mead always sounded sooo tasty. But is it really sweet? Always sounded to me like extra-sweet whiskey

This has nothing to do with the fact that he drinks Dos Equis.

No, it usually isn't too sweet. The only one that is overly sweet is a sack, but it is made with extra honey. It doesn't really taste like whiskey but rather has it's own unique taste. Almost like a honey and cinnamon cookie (like a snickerdoodle I guess). Pretty good.

Interesting. I've always thought of it as being sticky-sweet whiskey and my partner with similar taste in books thinks of it as being sweet beer. From wikipedia's description it's more like wine. Hmmmm
