I wear a TEH shirt at university... don't suppose you live in Calgary, by any chance?
Because I'm sure you are the only person in the entire world with a TEH shirt who is in college.

Anyway, nobody in the DC area seems to wear webcomic merch.

Some of us do!  I've seen a couple of XKCD shirts on the GWU campus, and I used to wear my Dinosaur Comics shirt around before I lost it.

A couple years back I was with my friends and we saw someone with a Megatokyo shirt and one of the girls in my group was someone I had just met so when we both pointed it out, we were instant friends. I see some CAD and a few QC shirts when I go to the gaming nights at a local college.

I myself have some QC and XKCD merch, but I've never seen anyone else with any.  Then again, I'm 16, live in a small town, and don't get out much.

I can see myself going off to college and spazzing out upon finding someone with webcomic merch.

Probably because we spend most of our time in Unix-labs or drinking at home.  Or drinking in Unix-labs, although you can get in trouble for that sort of thing.

So, it looks like all of Australia likes QC.

I've spotted no less than two QC t-shirt wearers out and about on the streets of Sydney.

Saw a guy in a pub in Dublin once with an Achewood tee, we drank tequila together and confronted the gardi.

When I was still on Okinawa I was wearing my Loch Ness Monster Adventure Club shirt and got spotted by a random lieutenant who was touring the barracks.  It was kind of weird.

I only own one webcomic shirt (SGR: I Am Your Secret Scary Friend) and no one has ever recognised it, though people have commented that it is a cool shirt nonetheless.

Haven't seen any one around here wearing a single internet shirt, kind of wish they did.

Lets see, I own the Megatokyo Ninja shirt (got it when I was younger), the NPC shirt, Jesus is F'ing Metal, Jenova's Witness, Hey Listen, VG Cats, and Olly's Organix

I want one of those.  It's not a webcomic shirt as far as I'm aware, but my friend Sam has one of those "Mister Chief" t-shirts.  I think it was made by Bungie.

I wore my 'I can has torrents' shirt to work the other day, and three people commented - Two were all "lol torrents omg i use the internet too!" and one actually got it.  "So what do you think of Faye banging Sven?!" is not a discussion I ever thought I'd have in real life, at the smoker's hut.

Weirdest QC merchspotting I ever had was when Cristi and I were wandering around Soho the night before MoCCA in NYC last year and a random dude walked by in a hobocore shirt.

It is 80% probable that this was my drummer.

Also I was at MoCCA if you remember.

Yeah that would be weird.

Along the same lines, I have nightmares about a student recognizing a QC shirt I'm wearing. I've already had one experiences of a student coming to class in a shirt I recognized (he was wearing 'bomb the blogosphere') but kept mum about. Obviously I don't wear t-shirts to class when I'm teaching or at all during the winter, but what happens if someone runs into me on a weekend when it's warm again?

Not necessarily. I do teach in art school after all. And specifically, I teach courses in computer illustration and animation, so being a fan of webcomics fits right in. Still, it would be hella awkward.

I was in the college library today, reading the forums and pretending to be writing an essay, and when I walked out I suddenly realised how unbelievably geeky I would be considered if anyone actually recognised my Coffee of Doom tshirt. However, I figured that a) if anyone recognised it, they must have read the comic so would be unlikely to criticise, b) I wasn't that bothered anyway and c) I live in a community where the height of fun is attending the local Young Farmer's Association Whist Drive.

Moral of the story, kids? Don't be ashamed of what you wear, remember there is ALWAYS someone geekier than you (unless you're the boy in my old school who ran the Warhammer club and the Model Railway club and ran Linux classes, in which case I salute you), and most importantly the QC forums are better than porn because the college filters don't recognise them as non-work-related.

On a similar note, I was teaching an entry-level college freshman composition course when I was sixteen, and every day I walked into the classroom (usually in a suit), I crossed my fingers and prayed that no one would guess how old I was, given that the youngest of my students were still two years older.

Re: the OP, I have almost bought webcomic merchandise three or four times, but never seem to get around to it.  Several times, though, I've caught my friends making QC, xkcd, or Dinosaur Comics references, and we get to have, "Hey, you read webcomics, too?" conversations.  It's fun!

I get a lot of comments on my secret kisses shirt, not because they like or know of Diesel Sweeties, but because it is an awesome shirt. I guess if you just glance, it kind of looks like mondo-cleavage.

And my friend made her boyfriend a shirt of this XKCD because I guess that happens a lot at his job. I was like !!!!!!!! XKCD !!!!!!!!! but really I should never be surprised considering how many of my friends are engineers.

How so? A friend of mine teaches geography and regularly runs into his students at events outside of the university they have a common interest in, and a guy I know from gigs seems to teach in the department I study in although admittedly he's never taught me. None of this seems odd, so I'm wondering why somebody recognising and commenting on a t-shirt would be awkward.

My friend and I saw a guy wearing the library science shirt in the pub a little while ago, it looked far better in real life and we felt the need to do a high five. I see far more Cat And Girl hoodies than anything else though.

My boyfriend has a "SCIENCE! It works, bitches." shirt, but he hardly ever wears it to go out because he's scared someone will get offended.  :?

I would really like a "Clearly I've made some bad decisions" shirt or the "I'm not antisocial, just shy. (You can talk to me)" shirt, but alas, I don't have paypal.

There was a guy wearing a Math is Delicious shirt in my Italian class. I said to him, "Hey, I read QC too." and he said "What?". Then he never wore it to class again. I still sometimes wonder how he got a T shirt from a webcomic that he doesn't know exists.

And I thought I was a coward for never wearing my "WHITEY" shirt out in public. And I mean, thats kind of legitimate because I live in a neighbourhood full of Sudanese folks and they are all really awesome and i don't want them thinking I am a racist just because they have not been in this country long enough to get that people are just ridiculously sarcastic all the time

Also, dear cute girls that wear Dinosaur Comics/XKCD shirts at my university. I would totally hit on you but I don't know how to initiate a conversation based off a shared interest in webcomics, but you are all gorgeous and have taste so good on you.

I met one of my best friend's old friends from his old Ottawa high school last night and she randomly mentioned QC. I got pretty excited and was like "Oh man, I've been on that forum for like 4 years!" and she was like "Yah, I mostly lurk on the Sendspace thread and steal music". We had a pretty good laugh. I might have been really amused by this because I was fairly drunk by this point in the evening, though.

A chick was crossing the street yesterday for class change, wearing the blue-footed boobies shirt.  I interrupted my friend Adrian to shout over his head, "NICE BOOBIES!"

...Everybody except her heard me.  I don't think Adrian will walk with me to class anymore.

Edit: I realize this isn't a QC shirt, but I figured we were all familiar with the birds-which-are-also-breasts shirts.

Saturday when I was at work, I saw a dude in an xkcd shirt (the "my normal approach is useless here" shirt). I thought about saying something but I had to get to the registers because there was a line.

What's funny is I work at Bath and Body Works. Tee hee.

Someone should just go ahead and make a shirt for their comic that says "I read <insert comic> so talk to me about it for makeouts."

I would suggest Jeph do it, but his merchandising model is to draw random things in the comic on boobs and then sell them onto real boobs. It would break the fourth wall.

*If by my buying this shirt the proceeds go toward buying a vintage '59 Telecaster, more power to you. Otherwise you're on your own.

I came into my linear algebra class to take a test yesterday and looked up and saw this dude I've talked to a couple times wearing an Evolution Kills tee. Go figure that someone is wearing webcomic merch in my nerdiest of classes.

I saw a guy in a coffee shop here in New Zealand wearing the "Library Science" shirt. Which made me crack up. Which wasn't hugely appropriate because I was in the middle of a meeting over coffee at the time. There is also guy in my sign language tutorial wearing the "Science: It Works, Bitches!" shirt.

Though, to be fair, "Science: It Works, Bitches!" was on the front page of the university magazine a couple of weeks back. The guy who introduced me to xkcd and I had a good little chuckle when we saw that.

Good times.
