Walla Walla, WA
« on: 24 Mar 2008, 20:39 »

So I'm graduating uni in a few months with no real idea of what I want to do afterwards, and was planning most likely on just moving back in with my parents until I got my shit together and figured stuff out. But the other day, I was invited by a friend to move out to Walla Walla with him sometime in August, and I've been giving it more consideration that I expected I would. It seems like a nice area, and a change of scenery would be great. I'm most likely going to take a trip out there with him sometime in June, but until then my knowledge of the area remains rather limited. Is anyone here familiar with or have any helpful info about the area?

One of the coolest professors I ever had used to be a principal up in Walla Walla.  One of the girls in my class actually went there and knew him personally, which was odd.

"So nice they named it twice" is like their catch-phrase or something.

Beyond that, I don't know anything outside of what I could learn in 15 seconds from reading about it on Wikipedia.

edit: spelling hurrrrr

I seriously thought this was about somewhere in Australia. We have a lot of silly names around, so I figured there was a Walla Walla in Western Australia (WA). Then all the Americans started posting and I got confused.

Apparently we have a Walla Walla in NSW. Well whaddaya know.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who was confused, but I knew it was in NSW - which led to me googling it.

I wonder what led people to choose that silly, silly name for a place TWICE. Once, fair enough, we all make mistakes, but a second time? It's almost as bad as Wagga Wagga.

Walla Walla is nice, and has beautiful scenery.

I actually just graduated from Whitman College last year, which is right in Walla Walla.  It's a great little town known for onions and a growing wine industry.  Think early Napa valley, with tons of small family owned wineries that you can just stroll on in and have a taste while talking to the people who actually make it.  The wine industry has actually brought in some pretty good restaurants, art galleries, and other such classy places that really aren't as snobbish or pretentious as that might sound.  Since it's in eastern WA it's also pretty dry, nothing like Seattle.  Still, it's great scenery, surrounded by gorgeous wheatfields.

There are, however, a few caveats.  Being a small town, the night-life is iffy at best and the girls are--as confirmed by myspace--nothing to write home about.

my best advice I can give you... DON'T...EVER..MOVE.. (ok fuck the dramatics)

don't ever move back in with your parents, once you move back and you realize how easy it is to not pay rent, or clean up after yourself, you'll never leave, which will cut into your ability to get laid.

btw, I'm not speaking for experience ,but I've seen a couple of friends do exactly this, and it isn't pretty.

Did ya forget a few words at the end there?

I agree with his advice overall, although note that I am biased. Like, I felt so strongly about not moving back in with my mom when I didn't have a place to live for a couple months that I spent those months crashing at friends' places rather than move back in.

I spent three weeks at Whitman for a debate camp and my general impression was that Walla walla is a quiet town.  Kinda ugly except for the campus of Whitman and a pretty sweet park.  It's very deserty but I really liked the people and atmosphere of the folks in Walla Walla.

Man, this isn't true at all, in my personal experience.  I lost my virginity within seven or eight weeks of moving back in with my parents.  But I'm also moving out again soon, so maybe I'm an exception to this rule?  Or maybe it's just the fact that I'm young enough that most of my friends haven't even moved away a first time.

Either way, Washington is a gorgeous state, and if you're into extreme sports, there's a pretty good skiing / snowboarding / windsurfing / mountain climbing community up there.  From what I hear.

I think there might be a bit of a double standard for guys, if you still live at home by a certain age (roughly 25?) people will probably think of you as a bit of a loser. I know I would. I find it hard to respect people who refuse to take on independence and responsibility and that does actually dictate who I will sleep with.

No, I can definitely understand that.  I was mostly being facetious... the fact is that I'm seventeen and don't really fit the basement-dwelling paradigm (yet) (additionally, I've been employed since I was fourteen, have lived on my own for three months, and will be living on my own again come September).  At twenty-five, I think I'd probably think twice (maybe even thrice) about sleeping with a guy who still lives with his parents.  What is emotional maturity if not the ability to take responsibility for one's actions, the ability to make independent decisions?  And how can those abilities be evidenced if the roof over your head and the food in your belly aren't the fruits of your own endeavors?  Basically, emotionally maturity's pretty sexy.

It's true, though, that my anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise.

I live in my parent's basement, but I'm only 19 and I'm a full time college student (really really full time) and the only time I can work is on weekends, so I don't make enough money to really move out yet, and so I'm really just reassuring myself that I don't fit this stereotype by posting it here. Nothing else at all usefull to add!

I'm more likely to get laid living with my parents than with my current roommate.

Just had to be said.

I'm actually about to move back in with them.  I moved out, got a good deal where I'm at and everything, but I cannot find a fucking job in this godforsaken fucking state.  I *refuse* to go back into food service, despite the fact it's the ONLY thing I can seem to find employment in.  I am not going to cater to people who look down on me all day.  I just can't stomach it.  It's incredibly high stress, which eats away at my very soul.  Even remembering my last job at a deli makes me want to vomit, if I think about it too hard.

Every retail store in Las Vegas is apparently completely fucking full and I am not trained in anything because I'm retarded.  I'm 22 and regret every decision I've made in life since exiting high school.  I pursued the wrong majors, pursued the wrong college, pursued the wrong girlfriend, and pursued the wrong jobs, apparently.

man.

I depressed myself.

I should go to bed.

ForteBass that's a bit harsh. I see your point, if there are food service jobs available then there are some jobs, but if the job you do is totally soul-destroying then maybe moving away to find another one is a good idea? When I moved to live with my mum instead of my dad I was looking for a part-time job but the only one available was in a butcher's shop. I didn't take it, because I'm vegetarian. I still feel I have the right to moan about there being no jobs round here ;-) Although tomorrow I have an interview at a cafe, wish me luck.

Isn't the phrase "so good they named it twice" also used for a band or something? Duran Duran springs to mind, but it might be Wet Wet Wet (obviously it'd be "so good they named it thrice" if it was the latter).

My old room mate is from Kennewick, WA, right near Walla Walla and he's good people. If everyone in the area is as cool as he is, I'd say Walla Walla would be a great place to move. From what he's told me, all of his friends up there are pretty cool, too. And heck, there's a lot of cool cities up in that area that are (relatively) close to each other (Seattle, Portland, Vancouver). The Northwest is one of my favorite parts of the country, personally.

Whenever I think about Australia, I always remember the trains rides I took there going past places like Woy Woy and Berowra and those names always make me giggle. Berowra sounds like a Wookiee's name.

Around here we have a lot suburb names that make me giggle, Dickson being one of them (because I am Incredibly Immature) but we also have Weetangera, Dodsworth, Carwoola, Googong, Narrabundah, Tharwa, Uriarra, Wanniassa, Waramanga and Yarralumla. We sure do love our syllables in the ACT.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

Thanks for the info, all. I'm giving this a lot more thought that I ever expected to. Ireally like my hometown, but I haven't really done anything about pursuing a job for after graduation, and I'm not really expecting to find anything right away that pertains to my degree (spanish major, history minor, heh), so I'd really have just about the same opportunities out there as I would here. A change of pace would be welcomed, as well, although I have some really good friends here, as well as a twin brother, who'd be hard to leave behind.

I never really planned on starting any sort of career immediately upon graduation either. Ideally I'd like to live abroad in Latin America or Spain teaching english maybe a year or 2 after graduation, and Walla Walla would give me something to do in the interim. Any other helpful advice anyone can give me?

Oh, also, why in my last post when I tried to type "Butternút" (sans accent) did it appear as "fuck" ? I didn't notice that until just now.
