The dreaded AP Art

First off let me say that I am aware there was a previous AP art thread (I do use the search feature) but it was 2 years old and it seemed wrong to bring back a very much dead thread.

That being said are there any other QC forumites suffering through the hell of AP art as I am? Weither you're taking it now or took it before tell me about your concentration and breadth. Swapping advice is also nice.

My breadth is done (huzzah) and now I'm working on cramming in my concentration which is 'due' to my art teacher tomorrow. So far I have about 6 done and 4 in progress. I'm doing a set of 12 tarot cards in chalk pastel for my concentration -- Cliche, I know, but at least i didn't do a calendar.
By the way, q-tips rock for blending chalk pastel.

I kinda wish I was taking AP art. My art teacher has come to know me so well over the years that when I asked her if i should take it she didn't even bother to look up from her paperwork before saying a flat out "no."  :(

Aww... that sucks. =/
I go to an art high school so it's required to graduate an art completer; I didn't have a choice.

At my arts high school, we didn't have AP art. We had advanced classes, but not AP. At my normal high school, we did, and it was bullshit. I failed that class because the teacher and I fought on a regular basis.

Spluff: AP (advanced placement) Art is a class you can take in high school to earn college level credit for an art class.

Emaline: Ah, that sucks. I used to fight with my art teacher alot about pieces but now that I'm a senior she's backed off and lets me kind of do what I want.

On a related note, I won't be sleeping the next two nights to get all my pieces finished because they are due Thursday for me. I have no idea why she wants them all done so early.

I really really feel your pain. My art teacher just kind of assumed that we all have a lot of breadth work to use for our portfolios, so I just got my last concentration done yesterday, and now I have a week to do 7 more breadth pieces. Arg! And instead of giving us time in class to do them, she decides to make us all do a giant mural. Which we can't use.

I didn't know there was such a thing as an "art high school." I'm kind of jealous, actually!

My concentration is my car. (It's a 1970 Chevelle) Tarot Cards sound really hard to do. Maybe fun once or twice, but I don't think I could think of 12 different ways to draw tarot cards haha. Good luck with your breadth.

Oh man, that sucks! Good luck getting it all in!
My teacher was actually pretty cool about the breadth stuff. She had us spend the first semester on bredth and even a few extra pieces in case some didn't turn out well. We just finished our concentrations (I'm actually still tweaking mine) so we had a few weeks built in to get slides and do corrections.
The county I live in has alot of cool magnet schools; I'm really lucky! I love my school.
Cars sound really hard! I can't draw them to save my life. What medium(s) are you using? The tarots were very fun but did require alot of planning and research.

I wish I had extra breadth work. She just told us to bring in a concentration every 2 weeks and that we'd do breadth in class. Everyone in my class is really really slow so we've only done 5 things so far, and it's already April!

What country do you live in? I wonder if I can move there and finish out my last six weeks of high school, haha.

I mostly used colored pencils for the car, but sometimes paint and I did a collage-type-thing, which turned out really bad. What did you use?

Ooh, that really does stink. But there is still time; if you work really hard you can do it. I believe in you!
I'm in a county in North Carolina. NC counties are notorious for having either really horrible schools or really good ones.
I used chalk pastel in pencil form so I could get details and used q-tips for blending. Colored pencils are nice; do you use prismacolors? And what kind of paint, acrylic or oil?

AP Art wasn't offered at my school as a class, but I talked about doing the work independently and sending in a portfolio on my own.  I decided against it, and I'm glad I did, because if I had passed out of the introductory art class at my college, I probably wouldn't be an art major.  I started college as an English major and took Art Foundations for fun, and the Professor who taught it talked me into switching.  I am much happier making stuff than I would have been bullshitting the meaning of arbitrary object in random novel.  English classes ruin books for me.

:) Thanks, Saiokou. I am actually doing 2 paintings right now and I'm in between coats. I really shouldn't be using the computer, but hey, I gotta walk away sometime, I spose

oooh, NC. I misread, I thought you said countRy haha. My bad.

Yeah I use prismacolors, I put them in really really heavy though so it doesn't really look like colored pencil. And I used acrylic paint on my concentrations but I jusssst bought some oils yesterday and I'm painting with them right now. I really really like them, I just wish they were cheaper!

Do you have your concentrations online somewhere? they sound really cool.

Ooh painting sounds fun. But yeah, every artist needs a break. We have to get out of the dark, drab cellar to see the sun on some occasions, right?
I did actually say county** but I figured you would have no clue what county I was talking about unless you lived in NC. Guilford county though, to answer you. I think a few other counties in the midarea of the state have good magnet schools as well but I'm not sure.
I need to use prismacolors more. I got a set in 9th grade from my mom and she told me not to waste them so I have yet to actually use them, hah. But I hear theyre a very good dry blending medium. Acrylic is nice (my mom is actually an acrylic painter) but oil is so much fun. I used oil sticks for the first time this year (let me quickly digress to mention that these are not oil pastels but rather oil paint in a stick form) and fell in love with the medium. I ended up doing a big (20"x40") piece with them since they aren't small detail friendly. You might wanna try them sometime, but they are rather pricey. I mooched a set off my art teacher but I've seen them go to $5 a stick. If you can find them on sale and get some basic colors, though, then they'll last a while and be fun. That and it's just awesome to use crayon looking sticks of oil paint and blend with your fingers the medium of the masters.
I haven't gotten my concentrations shot yet but I hope to do so soon. I'm not completely done with them; I still have to put in the names of the cards.

**Edit: Wow, I misread that no less than 5 times. No, I meant county not country; Sorry!

AP Art means very little when you get into art school, or at least in my program it is. Basically here, it gives you maybe credit for one class, because they don't want you to get out of studio time and it doesn't get you out of any intro classes your freshman year. (This is only based on the program I'm in.) They didn't offer AP Art until the year after I graduated from my high school, but I wouldn't have taken it anyways.

Things like AP credit will vary from school to school, but at a lot of schools they won't count towards your major field of study. Since art is your major in art school, they may give you credit for AP Art, but they probably won't let you out of something they want you to take.

Not really. My professors could could kick my HS art teacher's butt. But really, they are amazing and I'm not sad about not having AP art.

Yeah I regret taking it, and I don't really want to waste money on the test since I want to take all the foundation courses at CCAD. Of course at this point, I have to finish all the work for a class grade anyway, so I might as well just take the test.

Yeah, I feel guilty when I do giant prismacolor drawings because they run out so fast (I blend a lot of layers), and it's like 2 bucks a pencil around here. Of course theres no point in having them if I'm not allowed to use 'em :). Oil sticks sound really neat, actually. Are they as expensive/more expensive than regular ol' oil paint?

Well, even if you don't take the test it's still a good art learning experience. According to my art teacher an Art I class in college is basically a bunch of charcoal and pencil figure/still life drawings so it's completely different from the AP art requirements.

Haha, I know how you feel, I hate using the class supplies or any of my mom's paint because of how expensive it all is. No wonder there are so many poor, starving artists. I don't actually know how much regular oil paint is since I haven't used it. But an oil paint stick is about the size of a tube of paint and sticks are ~$5-$8 and I'd hope a tube of paint isn't that much. I'll do some research later. There are a few good online art supply stores with good deals but I've found a local college art store to have better prices for them. If you want to get some you might try a smaller store like that. : )

If you're talking about oil pastels, sets run at affordable prices, and yes, they are quite nice to draw with. But then again, it's all a matter of what brand you get, but I have some that weren't expensive at all and are actually quite nice. (I have 3 sets: the cheapest is crap, and the other two, the one I'm talking about as well as a small set of Cray-pa's, which are decent.)

I just finished my AP portfolio about a week ago, thank god I chose the design portfolio so I can use photographs. I took two other advanced art classes, and used that class time to work on my portfolio pieces. Hooray for having one art teacher for everything!

My concentration turned out to be something like taking pictures of old buildings and painting them in modern way, similar to pop art. There are only three other kids in my AP class, so I was so excited to read about your concentrations. I'm not exactly sure how mine stacks up.

But I didn't take AP art for the credit. It's really useful to build a portfolio.

I love these threads!

I did my AP last year, but worked on it on and off from the beginning of my sophomore year. I tried switching concentrations halfway through and realized that I just wouldn't have enough pieces, so I went back to my original concentration of tattoos.
Breadth wasn't a problem for me, I just dug out whatever pieces I'd done that didn't have anything to do with tattooing and picked out the best ones.
My art teacher was really awesome, he introduced us to the AP program early on so we'd have time to get it all done.

Here's some of the ones that came out better.

Hey, those are really cool! I love the celtic knot piece; I did one of those for breadth in ink. Smart of your teacher to introduce it so early on I bet that made things alot easier. What medium(s) did you use? I thought I saw acrylic and chalk pastel...

oh..  I didn't peek to see how old the thread was..

I came in to talk about my current beef with my retarded AP art teacher.

It's her first year teaching AP, and she came from a middle school. x_x  So she's incredibly closed minded and called my energetic style: "scribbly"   <_<;;  I almost hit her, but I'll just let her remain naive.

She's not even letting us THINK about our concentrations yet, because "those are supposed to be done second semester."  but seriously, who's gonna know when I completed these projects?

Please Help? Maybe?
