Do you guys (meaning those of you with English keyboards) not even have a button with ´and `? What the hell? I'm gonna go google a photo of a keyboard to figure out what you use all the keys for. We even have three extra letters that have their own buttons..

We have a ` button, that with shift goes to ~, but it looks odd to use it, like e`, see? looks odd.

Yea, but they're not combining.  The Alt+number or cut and paste are pretty much the only ways.  It's one of the ways the computer industry has gone backwards; in the early 1980s I worked for a company* whose keyboards could be used for all European languages, and generate all the special letters and accents (even the weird ones) in a simple and mnemonic way.  Their pre-Internet email was pretty cool, too.  Of course, they no longer exist in a recognisable form :~|

Well, my keyboard is Norwegian, so that makes sense. The button with ´and ` combines if certain characters are pressed after it, like é, á, í, ó, ú.. Also ñ is pretty easy, same with ç, æøå (of course) etc.. It just seems weird to me to complicate things. That being said, brackets and curly brackets aren't as accessible as on English keyboards, which is sort of annoying when programming, I guess, but I'm used to it.

What doesn't exist anymore? The keyboards (if that's what you mean, it sounds like any Norwegian or maybe Swedish or Danish keyboard would do at least mostly what you're saying) or the company?

ETA: After re-reading your post, I'm guessing you meant the company, so nevermind.

I realize localization has something to do with it.  My brother, for example, sets his keyboard to portuguese because he got used to the portuguese settings while on his mission, as he was down in Brazil.  It's possible to use control + alt + shift and all that other sort of jazz to easily type accented characters, but you have to set your keyboard to do it.

tl;dr

character maps are fun.

Actually, Ladybug, my keyboard does the same thing.  Combines 'with the letters that combine with it I guess.  I am constantly havign to press space after the ' key.  because I am Australian and I don't need accents very much.

Also, i really love the Invader Zim piggy cake.  I could never have been the first person to cut it though, it's just too cute.

with windows:

alt+ 160 =á       alt+ 130 =é
alt+ 161 =í        alt+ 162 =ó
alt+ 163 =ú       alt+ 164 =ñ
alt+ 168 =¿       alt+ 173 =¡

As a spanish major I have all these memorized at this point. I know there's easier ways if I messed with macros or my keyboard language settings, but I prefer just knowing these by memory because then I can easily use them if I need to type something up on another computer if I'm on campus or something.

Some quick trial and error with the alt codes found these:

alt+ 135= ç
alt+ 148= ö

If you just go from alt+ 128 thru about 165 you'll get most of the vowel alterations.

Also, I found this:

I have a gut-level, almost irrational hatred of Macs. I don't know why; it's not out of some PC snobbery (in fact, it would be easily provable to say that Mac users are the bigger douchebags when it comes to haughtiness levels.)

I guess it's that most of the worthwhile programs for Macs are available for PC, albeit not quite as high quality. The same is true of things like Microsoft Office for Macs, but there are still tons of programs for PC that Macs just can't do. And a couple (really cool) art and music programs aren't enough to make me go for a bland interface, mind-numbingly dumbed down technology and myriad more tiny quibbles (those goddamned mouses!) that, when added together, become a deal-breaker.

Fuck. I hate Macs. (prepares for flames.)

I packed a Simnel Cake baked by my wife to take to my son in Germany.  Unfortunately we went to Heathrow Terminal 5 on the day it opened, and my luggage, with the cake, got left behind.  The day we came back it was sent by lorry to Milan;  yesterday it went to Frankfurt; and my case arrived home (including cake) about an hour ago (but not my wife's, yet...).  The balls have fallen off the cake with all the travelling, but I'll stick them back on later and upload a picture.

Anyone here ever had watermelon cake? (I get the vague feeling this has been discussed before.)

Raspberry sorbet as the "Red" part, with chocolate chips as seeds, whipped cream as the whiteish part, and lime sorbet for the green.

Looks a lot like

this except with more green layering, and..not gross.

Considering the fact that I fully intend to feed myself off of, well, making music, and considering the fact that Macs are just plain easier to use (and don't fucking freeze for no good reason every two days, and also don't get viruses), it's kindof a deal-maker.

When I compare the last 4 years to the previous 18, I have been much happier with a Mac than I had been my most of my life when I used a PC. And you can buy a mouse with two buttons! They make them, you know, and work the same way! Wow!

But cakes. Cakes are amazing. I want to make a Lego cake. Like this:

This got me all excited, searching the intertubes for more nerdy cakes.  In the process, I found these step-by-step instructions for a Yoda cake.  If the last line of the post was not "It took about three and a half hours to decorate," I might have considered spending my day off tomorrow making an edible Yoda.  Also my oven's broken.

Simnel Cake, as promised.  This was only 6 inches diameter, because we were taking it on the airplane, and we couldn't fit the proper 11 balls on it - so it only has ten.  If it looks a little disheveled, remember it has travelled round Europe for a holiday...

Wow.

DEFINITELY a keeper.

Anyway, those of us in the US don't have AltGr. We just have right Alt, which doesn't work as AltGr, unless you remap the keyboard.

So, unless you've remapped your keyboard, or are running Mac OS, it's alt-codes for you. (Actually, alt-codes don't work on anything other than Windows... not sure how you'd do it on a *nix, other than remapping right Alt to AltGr.)

The more people get macs, the more viruses there will be, while OSX may be more secure, I don't know that for sure, and I do know that there will be security holes in it, just not enough people use it to make it worth making lots of viruses to go after them. I say that Linux is probably the safest, because as soon as a virus comes out, you will have hundreds of people working on fixes, while Microsoft doesn't want you screwing with the technical aspects, that is what Linux is for.

My elementary had Imac G3s (those are the ones with the big bright colored monitors, right? That is what I remember best) for a couple years while I was there, I am pretty sure they have upgraded them sometime in the seven years since I was there, I don't remember seeing them last time I was there. They still had apple IIs as late as '98 or '99, though, so there is no guarantee. I remember really liking them then, but I also know that I did not try doing anything complicated with them at all, mostly what I did was play Oregon trail and... there was one where you played as a fish, trying to eat the smaller ones while avoiding getting eaten by the bigger ones and the herons.

It is the games that are most important to me, I have good antivirus software and spybot S+D, and I don't do stupid stuff, so I am usually fine, though I would like to find a free firewall better than the windows default one, which only seems good for blocking my video games when I first set them up.

And I plan on getting a degree in Computer Sciences, so if I don't know how to use windows, I am SOL.

Well thank you all for all your kind comments.  You're makin my head all big.  ( not to mention giving me a defense for the next few months... "but hunny the internets said I was great... you can't be mad..")
I used to make crazy creative cakes, of much better quality, all the time, but now it is really just the once a year and it is always hurried.  I have to say I can't believe the whole gaming crew fell for it.  I cut the hat box down, but it was still huge.  If it had been real it would have served 20 people easily.

Ok, necroing because Kat has joined a contest at a website called Instructables.

http://www.instructables.com/id/PortalRickroll-Cake/

She's absolutely annihilating the competition with over twice the views of the 2nd place cake.

Also, Instructables is a great site to mess around on and I highly recommend it.

Ackblom, you were unsuspectingly helpful to me just now. I read your necroing comment and thought "but how can it be necro when it's only the day after the last post?" and then I realised that my computer clock is wrong.

Also, whenever I make cake it's purple, because purple is tastier. The trouble is that unless you mix the colouring perfectly, or use pale yolked eggs, the outside of the cake goes a nasty green colour. I'd show pictures but I don't have any. However, I do have these:

Sorry they're so big, I'm trying to reduce them!

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

Alright folks, I figured some new folks should be introduced to some wonderful cakes and besides that, Kat made a new cake for a friend's birthday! Labyrinth theme ahoy!

You have done a good deed. Also, having watched an inordinate amount of Ace of Cakes lately, what do those people have against buttercream? I mean, I quite enjoy fondant, but let's be reasonable people!
