It's not like civil liberties aren't being infringed America. In fact, it's just as bad as in Britain. Warrentless and illegal wiretapping of phones even with FISA expired, arbitrary arrest and detention (in many cases, police no longer need a warrent to enter your home, thanks to the Patriot Act), and while the internet isn't "censored," make no mistake, what you do and where you go is either monitered first-hand, or the records of those things are handed over to the government by your ISP.

I feel like that has to be exaggerating things a little bit. Just about any time someone uses the term "make no mistake" it feels like an exaggeration.

But, it might not be. I don't know.

And you're a stupid man, Angus Podgorny, if you think that's different from the previous 60 years of government monitoring of civilians. The law has always been three steps behind the actual actions of the FBI & CIA and has never made an impact in their actions no matter what the law is.

Did I say that? No. Of course there's always been illegal monitoring.

But it was never this bald-faced, egregious and wide-ranging, even at the heights of the red scare, simply because they didn't have the technological capability to handle the mind-boggling amount of information they can get and process nowadays.

I don't think that's a shift in government so much as a shift in technology. The average person can find more information about anyone anywhere these days than they could 10 years ago, way more than 20 years ago, and infinitely more than 50. Our culture of information flow is more the cause and the government is just tapping it at the source, same as it ever was.

I agree, of course. It's terrible. But it's not something that can be fought within the system, because the system either can't or won't fix it. It benefits from it when it won't, and even when idealists try to fix it, it does nothing. The only way to fix it is to fight the system. Be the person the government is looking for with their surveillance.

I got a great workout, went to work, bought a bunch of new clothes for the summer, binged on burger king, and sat on my ass at home.  Oh, and finally realized that this vacation I planned wasn't working out as I had hoped.  It sucked.

Slept in (missed first class, fine with that -- not like Econ 101 is hard or anything)
Ate a breakfast (got the last, juicy piece of bacon, made it all the better)
Went to physics class & took the last mid-term exam
Hung out with a chick from that class and went exploring the campus
Ate lunch
Played a tiny amount of various Castlevania games
Took a long nap
Went online here and posted about it

Today, I've been awake for 19 hours, have run 8 miles through hills and mud, and am about to go to a barbecue. I finished first both times I ran the trail (considering I set it, that wasn't hard) and then proceeded to beer it up and flirt with really cute ladies.

Later, I will go to my friend's apartment, where we will watch baseball and eat pizza.

Today I got my deceased Grandpas bed for my new apartment.

I am not sure how to feel about this.  My inflatable bed which I was using is leaking.  It still inflates but by morning I am basically on the cold floor.  I have enough money now to afford a decent new bed but I said yes when my parents offered to drop this one off.

It's a nice bed.  It's not old at all.  I am sure Grandpa wouldn't mind.

So I set that bed up today.

I saw a bee.

I saw a bee today and held my cell phone up to it. Needless to say, it mutated and enslaved my town. After 6 months of working in the bees' giant honey mines, I hooked up with a man named Greg Hadley and together we lead a resistance group against the bees and retook our town.

Later, Jenny Hoffman still wouldn't go to the dance with me.

I'm cleaning my room! I want to buy a wardrobe to keep my stuff in, as it is everything is just on a freestanding clothes rack which means my suits and coats get all dusty, but this means that I'll have to rearrange my room which means cleaning it up! Which I suppose is good as I have already got two garbage bags full of clothes. One full of dirty clothes that need washing and one full of clothes that I haven't worn in over a year and should be given to Anglicare or St Vincent's or one of those charity things where you dump all your crap into the bins that homeless people live in.

Why do so many threads seem to turn into "when I die, this is how I want it to be" threads?

Anyway, getting back to the blogging, blog thread, I slept in, worked the afternoon shift, had dinner out with my boyfriend, then watched Star Trek and had sexyfuntimes until 1, at which point we went to Denny's to split an order of chicken fingers and made small talk with the night shift waitress named Maria who recognized us 'cause there aren't too many places that are open at one or two in the morning.

I know it's probably ridiculous, but I always feel better about giving directly to thrift stores (preferably charity-centered ones, like the Autism-school-related one near me or Out of the Closet, the AIDS one) where I know the clothes will be sold and the money donated to research and equal access to medication.  Also I tend to shop at thrift stores, so by donating the nice clothes I have that I never wear, I feel like it's buying karmic insurance of a sort--if I donate my clothes, I'm sure to find something cool that I want later.

Well apart from the fact that I don't believe in karma there aren't a lot of charity based thrift stores (there are heaps of thrift stores in my neighbourhood but most of them are privately run and the proceeds don't help anyone but the owner) around here. The Smith Family is a secular charity that I'll be happy to donate my old clothes to. They don't do research into stuff but they help poor kids and disadvantaged families and stuff like that and that is good enough for me.

I've actually had a somewhat productive day! Got up, did three loads of laundry and folded the stuff that needed folding while some of it is still hanging, then studied for about an hour (computer networking). Made an awesome dinner (chicken filet with some spices and..erm..garlic "cheese" (meaning not really cheese, but the kind that you can spread on bread that is more of a paste) - yum!), and in about 20 minutes, I'm going downtown to watch a football match at a pub. I hope we win! Doubt it, but still. Excited!

May not sound like much, but damnit, I'm lazy these days.
