Author Topic: So I'm done listening to Depressing Music! Suggestions?  (Read 11632 times)

I've decided to sort of turn over a new leaf in my life today. I read somethin a while back about how what you hear affects your mindset or whatever, and i will admit i listen to lots of emo/sad/crap/whatever music. I don't think i'm depressed or anything, but I've decided listening to emo/sad/crap/whatever music can't be too good for my head either way. I'd love to see what the people here have for listening suggestions, and I'm open to anything! (excluding (c)rap but i don't think thats gonna be a problem )

You'd probably be best off with The Beatles, The Flaming Lips, Love, Mountains in the Sky, Super Furry Animals, Donovan, Asobi Seksu, and maybe some good dance music like Soulwax.

Been listening to a lot of Los Campesinos!, they're so bouncy that it's hard to stay in a bad mood while they're on.  The Go! Team is also my old standby for happiness in aural form.

Yeah, I know.  As far as suggestions go, Polysics never seem to depress me.  Nor MF DOOM.

You can't really go wrong with MF Doom can you. J Dilla has been making me feel happy recently, Donuts would be a good move.

Polysics, yeah!  Um, Enon’s High Society is pure fun.  Elastica, Chicks on Speed, Franz Ferdinand.  mclusky’s mclusky do dallas is angry but energetic and hilarious.  Ratatat.

Try Los Campesinos!

They have a new album out soon I think.
If not, a lot of their stuff is available through their myspace.

basically summed it up.

Why are you against rap? You're missing out on the beastie boys, jurrasic 5, the early outkast, and so much more. Not at all depressing. And rather good.

Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow.  "Make You Feel That Way" in particular is a quality song.

Also ... Architecture in Helsinki, the Islands, and the Unicorns tend to be cheerful.  And, hey, the Beach Boys.

If you listen to Death From Above (1979), you will be too moved to shake your ass and go crazy to be depressed.  Though the same could be said of earlier Sly and the Family Stone (circa Stand!) and they perhaps have a more general appeal.

Also, the Exploding Hearts.  Even when singing lyrics about 'sleeping aids and razorblades/tear stained pictures of younger days' they're just such a catchy powerpop band that it's impossible not to like them.  Though their bio is depressing.

Wait, did he do a solo album? I know he's with J5, and the stuff he did with Ozomatli. I'd have to pick that up.

When I just want a good poppy album, I go with Hey Mercedes.  Good deal.  Also, I know the subject matter is somewhat depressing, but for some reason Pinback's "Summer in Abaddon" always puts me in a great mood.

Also De La Soul's song "Jenny (Derwin's Revenge)" for the line, "She said let's try it in the bathroom, but the Noose is way above sinks!"

Sam Cooke - Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963. I don't know a lot about soul music, but this is an album that always makes me very cheerful. If you're looking for something new, definitely give this a try. This is also one of the best live albums ever recorded.

A lot of songs from the Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea album also make me very cheerful. As a music lover you probably already have this though, if you haven't you're missing out and you need this right now.

Also check out some bossa nova music. It's a very cheerful jazz style from Brazil that will make you feel warm inside. A few recommendations: João Gilberto - Chega de saudade [1959], Stan Getz & João Gilberto Getz / Gilberto [1964], Antônio Carlos Jobim Wave [1967].

Listen to the song 'Shrimp' by Mr Scruff.

I swear to god that shit is like musical prozac.

Seriously if you sit through all 7-8 minutes of it and are still depressed you are doing it wrong.

go for aquabats. i mean, if you're in the whole depressing music slump, go for those guys. they know how to be rediculous.

I like obscure stuff, which would be more obvious if you knew me personally... even though aquabats aren't obscure, really...
