Graphics Tablet?
« on: 26 Mar 2008, 18:03 »

I was wondering if I should get one. My art is pretty mediocre but im getting discouraged because i can only sketch and not ink it afterwards and have limited supply's for painting and such. I don't know. And if so which ones should i get. I dont have any examples "no scanner in my dorm room."

A bamboo or a graphire should do you fine. Whether or whether not it is a good purchase depends on how much you would use it - if you sketch regularly, then yes. Otherwise it'll probably end up just sitting there.

I think it is okay to hijack this post. (It is related, similar view!)

I know someone with a graphic tablet, now i've never used one myself but something thats always got me.

When using it, do you look at the graphics tablet or on screen? I'd personally find that very... strange. I mean I've drawn for some several years and well I'd find it strange not looking at what im drawing, but I am, i'd be watching it on a monitor.

So the point im saying, is it easy to get used to? Or is it something that takes time to overcome?

I actually didn't find it that difficult of an adjustment.  I use one of these both at school and at work and they are very nice.  The pen is comfy and it's very easy to use.  You can also play with settings to streamline the interface.  Plus, they're fairly inexpensive, as far as technology on a whole goes.

Well does it come with software or do you need to buy software that is compatible? I know im stealing his thread, just well at least its not a new thread! Rigth expanding. Also more questions, is it as good as the real thing or better? (I mean since you don't waste paper. Makes sense there im studying the environment so.. well saving paper is the smart thing to do here! Also paper is expensive!

You look at the screen, it usually takes a bit of practice to get used to.

They usually come with software (adobe elements, etc.), and the driver is free. Most decent graphics programs can use it's capabilities.

It depends what you are using it for to say whether it is better or not, but on average I'd say it's better. You can produce much better final products with a tablet -  theres definitely reasons that all the professionals have swapped over.

Fantastic, I shoudl look into it, at the moment im still on my musical creative stage, i'll soon come back into my drawing creativity again, I rotate around, need to look into movie making. But I would love to draw and perhaps colour (Although need experience, i've not coloured in YEARS!, litterally I haven't coloured for almost 3 years now. I am a black and white pen drawer, I get my friends to colour for me since well I lack confidence.

They're cheap enough now, and drawing with a tablet gives you much better results than mouse drawing does.

I picked up a Graphire4 for $100 on sale a couple years ago. It does what I need it to well enough. (That is, doodle and retouch pictures.) I think the Bamboo is basically the same thing. A Cintiq would be awesome, but they're pretty expensive. (They're glorified touchscreens with pressure sensitivity.) For now it's simple enough to get a similar result by aiming a VGA video projector at the Graphire.

I've actually been looking into the possibilty of modding a regular wacom tablet and lcd monitor into a cintiq. It doesn't seem like its that complicated... and it also seems like its easier with an old laptop, but I don't wanna break one of those.

I remember seeing something like that on Hack a Day a while ago...

EDIT: Found it.

I consider drawing on a tablet and drawing on paper to be completely different things.  To me, they are about as similar as pencil drawing and painting.  Similar principles, different feel, techniques, and results.  There are things that a tablet makes easier, like using layers so you can arrange your image, correcting mistakes, and zooming in for detail. There are things I still think are easier on paper, mostly because the tablet does make me feel sort of detached from what I'm working on.
