Also, there is a new game coming out from the same director that has Vyse and Aika as playable characters. Not quite a spiritual sequel in the sense of say, Bioshock, but the closest we'll get to SoA2 for a while.

Seems neat. Unfortunately, it is for PS3, and I don't plan on owning one of those for a very long time. (too much money plus I have all the other current gen consoles to keep me occupied)

I do have the other two current gen consoles, but I spend a lot of money on video games anyway, and I do think I will eventually buy a PS3 for all the weird Japanese shit that publishers won't put on the 360 because nobody in Japan owns one.

Basically, ITT: I have yet another internal struggle with my poor impulse control and my desire to hold out for another price drop before buying a PS3.

Oh God, this stuff brings back memories.

I absolutely second

- Syndicate Wars
- Rise of the Triad (when I was 9 or 10, I once didn't come home from school and my distressed mom found me in the school's PC lab playing ROTT and loving it)
- Bloody Roar
- Lost Vikings (what an awesome game idea)
- KKND - I was and still am a firm believer in the Warcraft school of real-time strategy game controls. That said, I loved KKND. The customized units were totally useless but some of the units you could produce there, I still wish I had in other games. Especially the tank with the two ginormous machine guns. Also, great soundtrack.

My great games that nobody remembers:

* Captain Comic (from '89 or so, whopping 16 colors. Took me 3 years to finally finish it. But I had started playing it when I was 5 or 6).
* Sokoban
* Death Rally (had the shareware version for years and always tried to beat the faster cars with the biggest one I could buy. Hopeless.)
* Bleifuss - the German Need for Speed. Awesome controls and pretty cool tracks.
* Bifi Racer - a little promotional game that had quite a cult following.
* STUNTS! Whenever I talk to people whose first computer game was NFSU or Warcraft III or even Half-Life, they look at me like I'm a strung-out hippie talking about the glory days when I tell them that a great game didn't and doesn't need great graphics. I weep when they don't understand.

I know Syndicate Wars was 3d, but why do people prefer it to the original?

I remember Captain Comic. Well, I remember that it existed, I remember it was there in the explorer-y thing that I think Norton Commander let us have rather than just the dos command line. I remember I kept trying to play it but something was wrong and it never started, so I always went back to Crystal Caves instead.

It was a very basic jump 'n run. Ran on our old 286 with 640k of RAM and 8 MHz processing power (12 if you pressed the Turbo button!).
8 levels, collecting treasures, picking up power-ups that made your gun better and not being able to save. If you played it, you played it in one sitting.

There was a strategy game I really liked that one of my brothers friends let me borrow and play way back, but I can't for the life of me remember the name. So in that way not even I remember it. There were several factions in it though I remember, and one of them were like beasts, and in that you started out with like a single beast tamer who basically summoned all of the other units, who in turn would get more advanced tamers who could summon more powerful creatures, there weren't any buildings or structures for them, and I thought that it was really original. There were at least two human factions, one your basic medieval style and the other a sort of seafaring group that had a lot of archery. You gained resources by capturing lodestones or something like that, and I just really liked the gameplay for some reason. Its probably a pretty old game and the graphics were 2D.

In fact if anybody could help me out with the name maybe I could track down a copy of it somewhere, would like to have a little nostalgic trip to add on to me rebuying Diablo II.

I can't believe I forgot this one. I always forget it when listing my favorite games of all time, but this is definitely one of them.

It is a monster-catching themed RPG, with a great story and really fun combat. The main thing though is that it had a monster-fusion system
(often imitated, such as in the Shin Megami Tensei games) that was really great, and to this day I don't think that system has been topped in an RPG.

Also it really upset me when the sequel sucked.

Hehe BACON!!

I think my game would be... Harley's Humongous Adventure... I think Descent is a pretty popular game...
I knew and like KKND. 'Twas epic.

If anyone knew Reign of Fire, it was a kick-ass RPG series...

The Oregon Trail

Fuck Oregon Trail. I was playing it last week on Virtual Apple to relive the glory days of 3rd grade when I was the best kid in class at that game, and you know what happened? I did my usual thing: I started out as early as possible as a farmer, spent all my money but $20 (ferry & emergency money) on spare parts, clothes, oxen and bullets and spent a solid month and a half hunting for food while subsisting on starvation level rations. Emboldened by my huge pantry, I cranked up the meal size and proceeded to make great time. That's about when my fucking wagon burst into flames.

That's half the fun! God, sometimes I used to name every person in the wagon after someone I hated in real life and then just run the fucker into the ground... you know, 10 oxen but nothing else and then just hurtle forward at a grueling pace until everyone died.

Good times, good times.

Oh man, other people remember Captain Comic! I loved that game as a kid. Also Commander Keen. I really should see whether I can get those to work under bootcamp or something, that would be awesome.

I played a lot of Theme Hospital as well whoever linked that on the last page, same with the Incredible Machine. I also loved Creatures (but have appeared to have lost the disc for that), The Lost Mind of Dr. Brain and Lego Rock Raiders (no idea what year that was, but it was fun!).

Creatures eh? Well, the company that created that game died, and recently another company bought all of the games and the IP of it, and have for like the past two years done absolutely nothing with it. The interesting thing is, there's still a rabid fan base surrounding the games, breeding norns, making new content, and I believe the website sells all of the games in the series in a pack on their website, or you could check e-bay, amazon, there's used copies somewhere I'm sure.

Actually I bought a Playstation because of the game. I went over to a friends house and he was playing it. After getting slaughtered all night I went out and bought the console and the game.
I loved the one shot kills.

This game is so depressing man.  I was bad at the game when I was littler and kept dying, and all the sad fish and the music.  It was a very emotional experience.

Here's another game that frightened me as a child.

(sorry if this is considered necro)

I just read through the thread and was amazed to find no mention of the epic game Flashback (though there are a lot of dead links now, so maybe it was).  I remember playing that and Civ I (I think) on my older brother's Amiga for hours and hours at a time.  Hell, that may be what nerdified me.  Anyway, great game!  I should pick it up again, I'm sure I'd still remember the tricks... and that's rather sad now that I think about it.

I don't know if it's just nostalgia or what, but seems to me that today's games don't possess a tenth of the quality of these games of old.  Then again, perhaps I'm just a jaded gamer.

Also, the original Tie Fighter thumps all other Star Wars games, past & present.  Hard!

The best RTS before Supreme Commander in terms of game mechanics. Yes, the mechanics were better than Starcraft mechanics.

My most memorable moment of playing this was playing a LAN game that lasted more than 3 hours, because of the fact that resource production is infinite in the game. It was generally easier to mod than StarCraft, had more epic battles, and the use of terrain was the smartest shit I'd ever heard of. It's disappointing that very few RTS games out there learn from the Supreme Commander/Total Annihilation series, because after I played it no RTS ever felt as complex and entertaining afterwards in terms of gameplay.

Not the most creative story though. =P

YES! oh god damn, yes, how could I forget. And number two as well of course. The scenery, the music, the game play and the characters. All so beautiful.
