Shake Shake Shake
« on: 18 Apr 2008, 06:04 »

http://www.suntimes.com/news/902398,quake041808.article

I don't even live in Illinois and it woke me up at 5:30 this morning because my bed was shaking. Did anyone else feel this? Are you Illinoisers okay?

My fiancee called me this morning to ask if I felt it. It didn't wake me up, but I do have a vague recollection of dreaming that my bed was moving.

First the cougar, now this... we think some sort of apocalypse is coming.

...Now that is a terrifying thought.

This is my favorite quote from that article:

...I don't think I've ever heard an earthquake described simply as "interesting".

I don't think I've ever heard an earthquake described simply as "interesting".

I wouldn't have called it interesting. I woke up thinking someone had crawled under my bed and was wriggling around under there. It creeped me out and then when it stopped I was confused about whether if it had really happened or not. When I told my mom about it, she said she'd figured I'd woken up and was bumping into things or that the roof was shaking for some reason.

When reading those now, I don't think either of us have any sense that early in the morning.

We felt it in Louisville. It was my first earthquake and I was still half asleep, so I thought I had imagined it at first. Then my house-mate asked loudly "was that an earthquake?"

Nope. Didn't feel it, but I'm also a bit far south. We occasionally have tiny little earthquakes, but to me, it feels like someone is doing maintenance down the cul-de-sac, with like, a road driller.

I got to experience a 6 pointer while I was living in Japan. It was several miles out to sea, but damn it was about the scariest thing I've ever experienced. Tornadoes, I can handle anyday, but when the earth starts moving, that's when I'm done. I'm glad to see so far that everyone appears to be OK.

Hey, the cougar passed through Wisconsin, and, more specifically, the outskirts of my town (Janesville) too.

Unless there's two random cougars wandering the WI-IL state line.

I was in Peru for the 7.9 quake they had last summer, that was pretty intense. We'd driven through Pisco that day, but luckily arrived in Lima when it actually hit, so we didn't feel the worst. It was still pretty crazy though, more for the reactions of the people around us than anything.

The first two I didn't feel because I was asleep. I felt one of the small aftershocks at work around 10:15am, though.

It knocked some things off the shelves, and a cord out of the wall, but really not much happened. It was interesting.

That's actually a lot smaller than you might think. The skyline in San Francisco is not very large, pretty much precisely for that reason. Also, there's very strict building codes that new construction has to meet. People in other parts of the country freak out a lot about earthquakes, I find, but really when you're prepared for it like we are there's only one every decade or so that does significant damage.

I was actually working when it hit. It was so minor that I wasn't sure if it was an earthquake, or my imagination. The entire house wobbled, like being up on a swaying branch.

My first earthquake in the Bay Area was more definitive. Everything rattled and slid across the floor a little ways.

Sorry about that. Won't happen again.

So, they say because the mid-west is so flat, earthquakes travel better and can be felt further away. Here we have lots of mountains so we don't feel it unless it's our area. I wonder how true that is...

Just felt a little aftershock.

This made me laugh because when I took geography, our teacher told us that earthquakes were just like sex. It's the only thing I can remember him teaching us, which presumably is why I failed geography.

So apparently this was felt as far away as Kitchener-Waterloo in Ontario. Where I live. And where I may have been illicitly underground in a tunnel system a day after the quake.
Man if there was an earthquake while I was in the service tunnels I would have freaked the sweet fucking fuck out.

I think there's something to it. I'm no scientist, but I seem to remember being told in Peru that Cusco, a city in the mountains, never got hit by earthquakes because of where it was located. Sounds like there's something about the make up of mountains that acts as a kind of earthquake dampener.

ah! i thought the midwest was immune to this! i thought our unique scourge was tornados, apparantly i was wrong. luckily i live by train tracks so house shaking is not unfamiliar territory.

my mom's commentary on this event:
mom: you know how everyone says california is going to break off from the continent one day because of its earthquakes? my theory is, what will actually happen is the midwest will break down the middle, and chicago will become the new east coast!
me: mom, we don't have nearly as many earthquakes as california.
mom: there was that one back in 1998!
me: do we have them MONTHLY?
mom: oh.

but i do really like the idea of chicago becoming like, a second new york. oh wait it already is. BUT BETTER.

Somewhere, Howie Mandel just got a boner and he doesn't know why.

Then he stuck it in boiling water and carefully wrapped it in ethyl alcohol soaked latex.

He cried for three hours, three minutes, and three seconds exactly, wiping each tear away with an individual sanitized tissue and placing each one into a Ziploc bag before placing them securely in a hazardous waste disposal container. It is collected every Monday, Thursday, and Saturday at five o'clock. He has learned to give the collectors fifteen minutes of leeway in either direction from that time, but it stresses him so. Sometimes he gets tummyaches when they're more than ten minutes late.
