Far Cry 2
« on: 26 Jun 2008, 13:20 »

Holy crap, I cannot believe I am excited for a game outsourced to Ubisoft instead of Crytek. But it looks fucking gorgeous.

I'm especially looking forward to modding it. In my experience, open-world games are perfect for modification because the explicit purpose of any one thing is marred in the grand scheme of the game. Realistic Far Cry here we come!

I know the fire thing is a gimmick, but motherfuckers fix me up with two tickets for the express train to Hypetown.

One of the characters has a blog. It's actually really interesting reading. God help me but the storyline for this game might turn out to be fucking awesome.

Hmm, looks interesting. Not sure which way to jump - if the fire thing spreads more and you can create a real blaze I will definitely be getting this.

You're honestly hinging buying the game on whether or not fire spreads.

Uh?

Apparently, they had to reign in the fire thing a bit for gameplay reasons because in an early build, a playtester started a fire, ran to another part of the map, came back an hour later and found out that the fire had spread so far it had killed the final boss of the game. So apparently, it's not a gimmick. The weather system is apparently pretty neat too. It's interesting how though Far Cry 2 is still very much a technological showcase like the original, the new developers are focusing on different applications of that technology rather than 'omg these textures'.

That is one of the things that interested me and would convince me to the buy the game. If it wasn't for things like this in the game it would just be another standard shooter.

I'm gonna get it because I've always been a fan of open-ended games (ironically, though, I didn't like Far Cry or Crysis very much, probably due the linearity of their 'open-endedness').  And also it looks pretty awesome to begin with.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

I have only played Far Cry, not Crysis, so I don't know which of the new stuff was in Crysis already, but still ...

... this looks absolutely epic. I can see the fire thing becoming really annoying (as I suspect your buddies to be as dim-witted as any A.I. allies) but if you can use it strategically - smoking out enemies and the likes - it's a very nifty idea.

If they care as much about the "open world" as the presenter shouts repeatedly, I can definitely see myself spending as much (or more) time with this as Deus Ex. Which is one of my favorite games ever to this day.

Just a shame I'll need a new computer. Again.
