What the fuck?

2.    "Buzz-In"           2:34
3.    "Hanate!" ("放て!", "Shoot!")         5:02
4.    "Hana, Taiyou, Ame" ("花・太陽・雨", "Flower, Sun, Rain"; cover of the song by Pyg)         5:35
5.    "Tonari No Sataan" ("となりのサターン", "Next Saturn")         5:20

6.    "Kare Hateta Saki" ("枯れ果てた先", "Dead Destination")         7:26
7.    "Kimi wa Kasa o Sashiteita" ("君は傘をさしていた", "You Put Up Your Umbrella")         9:19

8.    "Untitled" (bonus track, "You Put Up Your Umbrella Part 2")         19:20

U.S. Version:

1.    "Flower, Sun, Rain" (cover of the song by Pyg)         7:26
2.    "Buzz-In"           2:57
3.    "Laser Beam" ("Shoot!" on Japanese version)         4:29
4.    "Statement" (different mix; "Message" on Japanese version)         3:24
5.    "My Neighbor Satan" ("Next Saturn" on Japanese version)         5:17

6.    "Ka Re Ha Te Ta Sa Ki – No Ones Grieve"           8:58
7.    "You Were Holding an Umbrella"           8:54

8.    "Untitled"           15:28

**Tracks in bold are constant on both albums, tracks in italics differ.**

I know this might seem negligible to some, but seriously.  A different tracklist and two songs that are missing?  What's the point?  And furthermore, where were the substitute tracks culled from?  I guess if could have been a collaborative decision by both Boris and SLR for some odd reason that I'm unaware of, but it just seems like some label douchebaggary from where I'm sitting.

OH NOES, THIS IS OBVIOUSLY TOO DRY, MIX UP THE TRACKLIST SO OUR SUNN O))) FANS GET THEIR BASS AND CHAOS

I think I'm done with domestic releases of Boris albums.  I should have just kept with my initial opinion and held out for an import copy.

Boris hope "this is going to be a new experience for everyone beyond ‘music’ 'Features collaborations with special guests: Stephen O' Malley (sunn0))), KTL), and Michio Kurihara (Ghost, White Heaven, The Stars). The Southern Lord version is drastically different than the version of Smile released by Daymare records in Japan. The main difference between the Southern Lord version and the Daymare version is the mix of the actual songs themselves. Where the songs on the Japanese version have a more electronic or noisy-psychedelic vibe, the North American/European version here features a heavier more straight-forward rock aesthetic. Its truly remarkable how the band consciously have set out (and achieved) to make two completely different sounding versions of the same album. It is a testament to their continual, endless well-spring of creativity! The Southern Lord version also features a track that has never been heard by anyone! : "You Were Holding an Umbrella". We purposely left this song off any promo versions in order to prevent the entire album from being leaked online.

  • oh hi

Yes, the US version is not nearly as good, especially the heavily-edited "Message".

So now I don't feel even remotely bad about downloading the Japanese version.

I'm still pissed off, but I'm at least consoled in the fact that what I have is still canon and part of the full experience.

However, not cool that I need to spend money on the import version.

They didn't. They have an entirely different label (Diwphalanx) in Japan.

I'll admit that I don't dig Smile as much as say..Pink or Heavy Rocks..but I'm still going to see Boris in July because they are great.

I would recommend ear plugs, they were excruciatingly loud. Anyway, with regards to this: perhaps I'm being cynical but I'm going to throw out the word "cash-grab". Two mixes is completely unnecessary.

I heard I'd have to bring ear plugs for my ear plugs.

But yeah. They're playing at the same place I saw Fu Manchu, and I really wish I'd had plugs for that show.

Admittedly that was a pretty poor interview; I was hoping for a good Boris interview because I'd never seen one before. Pitchfork asked fairly boring questions, Atsuo gave pretty boring answers.

Also: those who have seen Boris live, how much on an ANIMAL is he behind the kit? The mix was deafening, I don't even think he was miked up. Never seen anyone hit a drumkit that hard. All of his "WOOOOOO!!!" and "COME ONNNN!"s were kinda annoying, though.

I quite like those. There's a certain amount of their fanbase that seems to want Boris to just be this drone band, but the two times I've seen them live they've obviously been wanting to be a rock and roll band and his daft yelling from behind the kit seems part of that, and I like the way they seem to be messing with what some people want them to be. It's a shame that interview didn't go deeper into the most interesting part, where he was talking about Japanese glam bands and a search for authenticity in Boris. They also seem quite interested in the way their records are released (hence the different versions for different territories), and it seems that's always been there what with all the picture discs they've done and I would have liked to see them ask more about that.

I dunno man. "Sometimes I want to flip out and destroy Japan" gave me a good case of the lolz.

Oh, I loved the fact that they mostly rocked out- after all, Sunn came out afterwards and supplied all the drone, so rocking out was ok by me. It's also fine if he yells "woo" and/or "come on", I'd just prefer it if he didn't have his microphone on at the same time.

I don't mean to bump such an old thread, but yeah, after a good week+ of listening, this album is pretty damn rad.

Bunch of great crushing tracks, not to mention You Were Holding An Umbrella is one of the finest post-rock tracks I've heard in years.
