We all have a band we like but get mocked for liking/won't admit liking. Time to come out of the crappy music closet folks.

In before "Rush isn't crappy." (Not that I listen to 'em myself.)

I've gotten mocked for liking any number of things, but that's 'cause my friends didn't have a taste for Merzbow or Einstrüzende Neubauten or Throbbing Gristle.  I personally don't think those are crappy, though.

About half my friends think my music sucks and I frequently get mocked for "listening to shit that no one else has heard of."  However, roughly seven miles northwest, in Montpelier, everyone else listens to what I do.  There, I get told I have awesome taste in music.

I've never liked threads like this. I don't have a shred of guilt about listening to anything I listen to any more. And that includes the Communards, Justin Timberlake, Take That, Ashlee Simpson, Paramore, Eminem, blink-182, Green Day, All Saints, Barenaked Ladies, Daniel Bedingfield, Beyonce, Mel C, Mariah Carey, Coldplay, The Game, Jamelia, Alicia Keys, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Matisyahu, Kylie, and I canne be arsed to name any more. So fuck the lot of yerz!

Yeah, what he said.  I find the concept of the "guilty pleasure" to be inane.  I like She Wants Revenge and I could give a fuck what people think about that.

I tend to agree with the sentiments above that the concept of "guilty pleasures" is kind of stupid.

However, that being said there are definitely some artists that I absolutely love, but tend not to advertise that I love them around my friends.  Perfect example is The Pipettes because a lot of people just hear the first 2 seconds "Pull Shapes" and start snickering.

Ashlee Simpson

I wasn't too fussed about her at first, but that Outta My Head song is brilliant.

As for guilty pleasures, same as what everyone else said. I really don't see why I should feel embarrassed about liking a band.

I don't really feel embarassed about anything I listen to (even Celldweller) But there's a lot of things that people will try to shame me for listening to. I listen to Nine Inch Nails. And I enjoy it. All of it. It's all fun.

Even the remix records.

S.C.I.E.N.C.E is one of my favourite albums, it's amazing.

Anyway, I can't think of any people I like that are considered crap (apart from ones already mentioned), but in the opposite direction I can't stand Pavement, Sonic Youth, Led Zeppelin, Bowie or any of these critically raved about cult bands.

I thought Everclear's "Sparkle and Fade" was a good album. I still do.

I think Ozma is rad, even though it's been established that they're nothing but a good Weezer cover band.

Haha! I'm afraid we still disagree a bit.  S.C.I.E.N.C.E. has some pretty great songs, but I don't think it';s as strong an album as Make Yourself or A Crow Left of the Murder.  Although, I just remembered: I never listened to Light Grenades, in part because the album cover was so ugly. Was that any good?

Also what the heck, why would there be anything wrong with Throbbing Gristle or Einstürzende Neubauten.

Not even I like that album, but I'm a huge fanboy of everything else they've ever done and am eagerly awaiting the new album. Load >> 90% of the music discussed on this forum.

The only thing I could classify as a guilty pleasure are some of the bands/albums of my childhood. Blink 182's Enema of the State, Korn's Follow the Leader, Chubawumba's Tubthumping (which I am listening to right now). Actually it's probably only those 3 albums. Can't really say I'll ever listen to the first two, but if it comes on random play I'll get into it.

I also agree with Zerodrone about Merzbow fans existing solely on the internet.

I think the problem wiht Merzbow fans in meatlife is that a whole lot of his work is terrible. I love his collaborations, I've quite enjoyed one or two of his albums in the past, though it's not really something that I can put on too often. On the internet I will say things like 'Sphere was a pretty great record" as a sort of a throw-away comment, but if I meet someone who knows who Merzbow is then the conversation will probably go more like this post and it won't look nearly so much like I'm actually a fan.

I will agree--a lot of his material is very awful. But there are quite a few that are actually excellent (with 300+ records, you're bound to get a few gems). But what really appeals to me when listening to Merzbow (and other noise) is that it consistently pushes your brain to the edges, right until you almost can't take it anymore, and then... it's over. And the silence is beautiful.

There are times when I look at my cd collection and feel a little queezy. It's only natural that as you listen to more music, you come to the realisation you've made mistakes. Some bigger than others. Some that result in a bit of heckling from friends and foes alike.
Having said that, I'll admit I like Savage Garden and Rob Dougan.

My key problem with that album isn't so much the songs as it is the production. I think a lot of the songs are terrible, but that a couple like 'Some Kind Of Monster' and 'The Unnamed Feeling' would be brilliant if they'd been recorded and mixed right. Instead we get a guitar sound like sludge and drums that sound like biscuit tins, oh, and James Hetfield mostly singing out of tune.
