Smirking
« on: 03 May 2008, 20:10 »

I just realized the other day that every time I smirk (see: often) I smirk to my left. It struck me as quite odd, and after trying it out I learned I can't even smirk to my right properly.

So, let's all share in this thread about how we smirk and other odd motions that we only do to one side. Discuss.

I had such fucked up teeth before I got braces that my lip still curls as though I had a tooth sticking out of my upper gum.  I smirk to the left intentionally because if I smirked to the right I would expose gum.  Exposing gums while smirking does not achieve the desired effect.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by your smirk smirking left or right. I know that I have a crooked smile sometimes if that helps. This is because it looks rather dashing.

Do you mean, your left, or left to those who see you.

I smirk to my left I tihnk. I also twitch on my left and wink on my left.

I smirk to the right, and I do it instead of smiling. Usually when I smile, it just looks too non-genuine.

Man, seriously? It is half a smile. How can you not do it one way?

Also I can do both eyes winking and each eyebrow raised individually.

Same. It feels unnatural if I try to wink/smirk on my right side. Does anyone else have this weird opposite thing going on?

I I naturally smirk to the right, and wink (albeit badly) more naturally to my right side than my left.

I also do this weird thing with my right hand, where I make a strange series of motions while holding an implement that in turn makes marks on a piece of paper or other surface. I can do similarly with my left hand, but with much less control. Am I the only one here that does that?

I smirk to my right, and look like I have something caught in my eye if I try to smirk to my left. And I never wink, but if I had to, I think I'd chose the right side.. And I'm right handed, but I don't know if that matters.

Smirking to my left is a happy thing, smirking to my right is reserved for situations when I'm smiling because I'm depressed.

You think that much about what situation calls for which side? That's commitment.

I must admit I have no idea where I smirk. Maybe left? I don't know. I'm trying to figure it out, but I can't artificially smirk.

I usually do it on my right, but I can smirk both ways. I can wink both eyes, but I can only raise my left eyebrow on its own. And yes, I've tried raising the right several times and it just does not work.

I smirk to my left. In fact, I also sneer with the left side of my mouth. But I can isolate and raise the eyebrow on either side of my face. I'm also ambidextrous. (I'm both handed!)

My face is generally wonky. I smirk more to the right but then my face sort of twitches on the left to compensate.

It's ok though. I kind of like being wonky. I'd call it endearing if it didn't mean that I forever appear to be gurning when I'm trying to look sly.

I figured it out! I smirk to the right, wink with my left eye (I can wink with my right eye but I'm reliably informed that my left eye is "sexier"), write with my right hand, curl my lip in revulsion to the left and I generally jump off my right foot. Also I tend to focus with my right eye.

I found all this out because I care.*

I don't care! List thread!

I raise my left eyebrow and smirk and smile to the right. (It's frustrating trying to smile during a car conversation because I always drive and the passenger can't see me smiling because my normal, non-fakey, smile only works on the right hand side.)

I apologize that my thread offends you. If you do not enjoy it I would strongly recommend not reading it.

I find it very curious that a majority of people smirk/smile to their left. I also wink with my left eye, raise my left eyebrow, write with my right hand and ride goofy.
I know there was a thread a brief time ago in the Arts forum trying to find a correlation between right-brained (artistic) people and their dominant hand, but the thread seemed to show no visible pattern... I'm going to research this further and see what I can find.

I actually thought about that afterward. I made the remark and then noticed "Oh, hey, that thread about Pokemon with a half naked dude in it. Maybe I was a little harsh."

On the other hand, I think that thread would be perfectly fine if it were moved to the Computer forum. On the other hand, I find the prospect of a thread based around "which way you smirk" kind of shallow and without much room for any particularly deep discussion without veering extremely off topic. I looked through it to see if I was mistaken, and I'm really not seeing that I was.

Surely some of the General Discussion threads are worse.

I mean, there was the "Which Character Would You Bang?" one (I am paraphrasing the title, by the way). Surely that has to be worse than this.

I actually think this is kind of interesting! There is a link between facial expressions and mood, I believe we looked at a study way back in high school where people had to put golf tees on your face (I think this looks like it?) and tried to make them touch, which simulates frowning, which actually made them sad!
So, for whatever reason, smiling to the left makes me feel wistful and cheery, whereas smiling only to the right makes me think of me telling that lady that one time no, it's OK, you're not a terrible person for leading me on when you weren't sure, yeah, it's OK, we can be friends, why should I be mad at you, what would that even accomplish? It's a very unhappy happy.
